Not really?? He is NOT a descendant of Anthony & Susannah - for sure. But
I have lots of people like that in my main database (not the one that goes
with the Colby Family Association site) so that when people contact me and
say "My mother/grandmother/ whatever was named Colby I can check out if
they are a "Colby Wannabe" I did not find where he changed his name -
probably not in a court or anything formal. And did not find his marriage
info to see how he was named when he married. I think probably as "Colby"
as it would have been more trouble to change it after that.
The whole world wishes to be COLBY!!! right!!! LOL

I don't know where you got his first name as "James William" I only have
him as "William" His wife is Matilda Chambers. Besides Charles William
they had Susan L January 1888 and Mary C October 1890.
He must have changed his name, because he started out life as William
Colbert, son of William & Mary Colbert. See them on the 1870 1880 census.
I tried to find their marriage - to see what name he used - but no luck.

OH! I did not know that Merle had married!! Or had children! Tell me
about them!!
I think the death date is confused with Merle's father. Rufus died 24 June
190 in Waupaca, Wisconsin.

Merle D Colby b. abt 1864 s/o Rufus H Colby and Mary E Saunders.
Merle D Colby is said to have died in 1906, which I question.
Merle shows up in the 1892 New York state census
In the 1900 census his wife Edna is married to Frank R Varney. According to
census Frank and Edna married in 1899
Merle and Edna's two boys are living with her and Frank.
The 1905 state census only shows Edna and her two boys.
So what happened to Merle? Did he die prior to 1899 or in 1906?
Feed back greatly appreciated.

Ah, yes, I just dug that issue out of my files and reread it. It was a very nice and concise full column article, basically summarizing the Wikipedia information, and for the purposes of the newsletter, I doubt that any more would be needed.
I have all the newsletter issues back to 2001 (when I first joined the Association), but I don't always remember everything that has been published therein. Thanks for jogging my memory.

Hello Guy,
There is a small article about him the June 2010 issue. Perhaps I can dig
up enough information for a more detailed piece in the upcoming March issue.

That would have been my guess as well, though he apparently spent his life well north of there, up in the central California area. Alice is a Southern California girl, so I thought she might have some insight, but her postings on this thread have not confirmed it. From what little I know of him, William Edward Colby was a truly remarkable man; perhaps you could work up an article about him for the next newsletter.

I would guess that the Colby Trail could be named for William Edward Colby,
the first secretary of the Sierra Club, and also the first secretary of the
California State Park Commission.

Thanks Barbara. I hope to make it to the Colby Clan Reunion this August.
It's on my calendar!

I would guess that the Colby Trail could be named for William Edward Colby,
the first secretary of the Sierra Club, and also the first secretary of the
California State Park Commission.

Alice -
We Michigan Colbys are used to it - it's January and I'm watching it snow
sideways out my front window! Thanks for the warm thoughts.

That is a rather bad little fire! It is in the foothills (and probably
moving UP once a few more houses are burnt) north of Azusa,Glendora and
those places. A LONG way from ME - for which I am thankful - but I can
see the smoke & red sky.
At one time - a long time ago! - there was a Camp Colby up in the mountains
in that area. I tried to find it once; but there were so many dead end
roads, keep out signs, and no trespassing signs that I gave up :(
I met a man a year or more ago who told me that a Methodist Camp had bought
the grounds and operated up there in the summers. Or, they used to - he
had been a counselor when he was a teenager.
Dot, you may be buried in that cold white stuff; but here it is 88 today.
Good thing Colbys are TOUGH!!

All -
I was just reading about a brush fire in the Los Angeles area that started
this morning. In the article it is referred to as the "Colby fire". After
doing a little online checking, I assume it was given that name because it
started at Colby Trail Motorway and Glendora Mountain Road.
Any idea who/what Colby Trail Motorway is named for?
