Here is the web page with photos of the cemetery:
Sad that RIP means nothing anymore for those interred there.
Mount Moriah Cemetery,
Abandoned
Mount Moriah Cemetery, incorporated in 1855, originally occupied
54 acres in southwest
Philadelphia, along Cobbs Creek. It boasted an ornate Romanesque entrance and
gatehouse built of brownstone. Noted Philadelphia architect Stephen D. Button

Even though it says 'militia' you would think the birth date would be more
correct!!!! But I agree with you. Just weird.
Now, about his parents??? Possibly?? a first marriage for William Colby
and that Sarah chick??

I see the cemetery is in the news again ! First of all you should consider its location. The area is 100% black and a very rundown crimeridden area and has been for the last 30 or more years. If you should attempt to try and go there and locate a grave and stop a policeman for directions - they will tell you its a very "unsafe area to be in" Furthermore the State of Pennsylvania has very poor laws governing cemeteries. While I have not fought nor been engaged in this cemetery, I have been in another part of Pennsylvania and fought the battle with the State and a farmer who plowed under almost 100 graves so he could raise a little bit more of corn, one of mine went under this plow and I fought both the State and the farmer to no avail.
I am happy to report that all of my Colby's in Franklin Co., Pa. are buried in a clean well run cemetery, the exception would be Ephraim Colby, while I know where he is buried, his tombstone has been lost in time, but his children, grandchildren are all well maintained

Well shame on Philadelphia!!!! and what a super thing for those people to
be doing! I do hope some deep-pockets group will pick it up and keep it
open (for visitors, if not for bodies!).
Thanks for sharing.

Grave injustice: Group fights to reclaim cemetery's lost Medal of Honor recipients
By Cristina CorbinPublished September 29, 2013
FoxNews.com
Hidden in the jungle-like underbrush and Japanese knotweed smothering tombstones in an abandoned Philadelphia cemetery, Sam Ricks found his
calling: to uncover and restore the graves of America's bravest --
forgotten heroes dating back to the Revolutionary War, 21 of whom are
Medal of Honor recipients.
Ricks and his co-workers are painstakingly chopping through
over-growth with machetes at Mount Moriah Cemetery, an estimated
380-acre historic graveyard straddling Philadelphia and Yeadon, Pa., in a quest to preserve history. Buried within the decrepit cemetery are
2,300 Navy and Marines dating from the Revolutionary War to the War of
1812 all the way to the Korean and Vietnam wars, according to Ricks. The graveyard is also the final resting place for 404 Union soldiers who
fought in the Civil War, a few sailors, and two Confederate prisoners of war from the Battle of Sharpsburg.
And then there are the unmarked or dilapidated graves of heroes waiting to be identified.
"This is the heritage of our country," Ricks told FoxNews.com. "These stones -- they're not high-ranking officials or generals -- these are
the enlisted men who fought the battles. And we're trying to tell their
story.
"This is the heritage of our country."
- Sam Ricks
"These guys didn't write history, they made it," he said.
The largest cemetery in Pennsylvania, Mount Moriah was officially
abandoned in April 2011. At the time, the city was poised to cite the
cemetery for various code violations, according to Ricks, a Philadelphia resident who has Confederate ancestors buried in Virginia.
"The employees just up and left," he said. "They put up a notice that said it was closed to burials."

Subject: [COLBY] Genealogy TV show!!
Hi!
I just want to let people know about the project I worked on most of the
summer for the PBS television show "Genealogy Roadshow". It will be airing
starting on Sept 23rd. I don't know what time or station in your area!
There will be four shows in the series.
I will not be seen on the show (darn!) I was one of the 5 people
researching the information for the people you will see on the show. They
were not told anything so it will be a surprise on the show.
The two genealogists you will see on the screen are my good friends
Kenyatta Berry, President, Association of Professional Genealogists and D.
Joshua Taylor, President, Federation of Genealogical Societies. They will
be surprised, too! They are just going from the information that we found
and provided.
The producers would not let us, who worked so hard! see anything, so we
will be surprised, too. We don't know which people will actually be on the
shows, or which pieces of their families’ information will be disclosed.
I think, if nothing else, these shows will be highly emotional and
amusing. I hope you will watch and enjoy!

Not worth a lesson! LOL just stupid clerk stuff.
All it is - when it is time for the widow to start collecting, they write
her name on the next line down. Has nothing to do with any dates or
anything. Just easy place to write.

If the wife is listed as a widow in 1877 and is collecting his pension how
could he die in 1907???

The Alonzo Colby who died 1907 in Hartford, CT is
Alonzo Colby b. 1825 NH d. 1907 s/o Isaac Colby and Sally Stickney
his wife Caroline Eastman Morse b. 1835 d. 1908
both are buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford, CT
As far as I know the widow can't file for benefits until she is a widow.
Ron

And while looking for HIM keep an eye out for Alonzo Lincoln Colby who was
listed in the California Great Registers as born in New York about 1835 and
was an engineer. (no idea what sort of engineer)
He is NOT Alonzo L Colby - child of John Colby & Esther Getchell even
though he was also in California at that time. This person was born in
Maine, not New York and was a miner, not an engineer (unless miner =
engineer)???
