Hi Susan,
Forgot to comment on something you wrote. About my grandfather, he was
brutal with my mother. He was one of those traditional Greek men who
ruled their homes with an iron fist. I'm sure that he called all the
shots! Whether or not he was mean to my grandmother, I don't know, but
since your mother grew up next door, she would have been there to observe.
My mother's biggest "sin" was meeting my father when they were 13. At that
age, they were just friends, of course. When he returned to Manchester and
went back to school, he wrote her a very innocent letter, telling her about
school, things he did, etc. My mother hid the letter above one of the
rafters in the barn, but my grandfather spotted it. He accused her of
everything under the sun. Of course, he forbid that she have a
relationship with my father as she grew up because he wasn't Greek, his
parents were divorced, ETC. He had some Greek guy who owned a fruit store
in Keene lined up to marry my mother! I don't think she'd ever met him.
She had to leave home (more like escaped) because my grandfather had become
so abusive toward her. In his eyes, she was a whore, even though nothing
had ever happened between her and my father except for innocent puppy
love. He went after her with a shotgun and tried to kill her. She got
away and later returned to the house with a neighbor to retrieve her
clothes and her few belongings. After that, she lived in Newport in a
boarding house with two other young women. My father, of course, was away
in the Navy. Most of their courting was done through the mail, and they
rarely saw one another. I'm sure that she saw him as her Knight in Shining
Armor, and for the first time in her life, she felt loved. When they were
married, my grandfather didn't go to the wedding, and he forbade my
grandmother and her brothers to go. My uncles went, anyway. Right after
the wedding, she joined him in San Diego, where he was stationed. After
that, they lived in DC until WW II, when he was sent to PA to teach at the
Naval school. This is a hoot: She and her father reconciled through the
mail, and he and my grandmother were thrilled when I was born. I was their
first grandchild. When they returned to NH, my grandfather got to know my
father, and he thought him to be wonderful, intelligent, etc. They became
good friends and loved to argue politics. My grandfather was a Roosevelt
Democrat, and my father was a staunch Republican. My mother hid from her
family that he drank and would go on binges when she didn't know where he
was for days at a stretch. Finally, my uncle went to spend a week with
them, and my father pulled one of his disappearing stunts. My uncle was
furious, and everybody found out about the secret horror that my mother had
been living. By then, my grandfather was dead. He passed away when I was
18 mos. old. The only bit of abuse that I ever heard about from my mother
occurred once when I was crying in my crib and wouldn't go to sleep. He
had a super hangover and became furious at me. I'm not sure what happened,
but my mother intervened and made it clear that if he ever repeated
whatever he did that she would kill him. Apparently he didn't!
My grandfather fell out of an apple tree when he was 41 (?) and severed his
spinal cord. They sent him to doctors as far away as New York City, but
none in those days could help. Consequently, he spent the last 14 years of
his life bedridden and paralyzed from the waist down. My grandmother had
the burden of taking care of him, doing all the cooking, cleaning, mending,
clothes washing (by hand using a washboard and wringing things out by
hand), helping to milk the cows, etc. He died of a stroke in 1945.
That's about all I know about him except that he had a good sense of humor
and enjoyed playing practical jokes. I think he was very influenced by the
culture that he was raised in. A man's word was the law, and his wife was
expected to obey his every command. Greek women were often called by their
husband's name with "na" at the end, meaning "wife of". So, Peter's wife
would be Peterna. My grandmother was "Vasilna", meaning wife of Vasilious
(Greek for William). I guess it was similar to the old custom of calling
us Mrs. Larry Daniels or Mrs. Arthur Nadeau - as though our very identities
hinged on who we had married! Yikes! I'm glad that I live in a more
enlightened age!!!
Hope you are staying cool. Our humidity has returned :( I'm drinking a
lot of ice water with fresh mint from my garden in it!!!
Love,
Mary
