CONSTANCE ALICE PAPKE
12/11/1919 - 5/21/2013
Constance "Connie" Alice Papke, 93, passed away peacefully in her Colorado Springs home at 3:45am on May 21, 2013 of natural causes after a long and beautiful life.
Born on December 11, 1919, in Ottawa, Kansas to George Colby, Jr. and Bertha Ladd, Connie was the youngest of four girls. Her family moved to Southern California around 1920 where Connie grew up, traveling often by rail to visit relatives across the country.
Connie is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Hunt, son, Leroy Papke, seven grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Eva, Esther, and Mable; beloved husband, Frederick "Fred" Papke, Jr.; eldest son, William "Bill" Papke; and great-grandson, Stephen Anthony Hunt.
Connie met Fred at a church service in June 1936 and they were soon engaged. They were secretly married in Riverside in July 1937 but Connie's parents immediately had the marriage annulled and sent Connie off to Missouri to attend college at Central Bible Institute. Connie transferred schools and graduated from Southern California Bible College in June 1940.
Connie and Fred found each other again and eloped to Yuma, Arizona in March 1941. Connie and Fred raised their family in Southern California, including Lucerne Valley and Victorville where they eventually settled. Connie owned her own florist shop for a time and later worked as a switchboard operator for an answering service until she retired.
With an enduring spirit for adventure, she moved to Prescott, Arizona in 1991 and then to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 2010.
Connie will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to our Lord and Savior, for teaching His love to everyone around her, for her compassion, strength, humor, exceptional story-telling, and joyful smile. She was a gifted musician, playing the piano, organ, and accordion. An artist at heart, she created beautiful floral arrangements and crafts, crocheted, and sketched. Connie was also an excellent cook and baker. She put all of these wonderful talents to good use throughout her life, playing music in church, organizing banquets and events, creating gorgeous and delicious wedding cakes, and much, much more.
Jesus, The Holy Bible (John 11:25): "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." Connie loved and was loved by many. She was a blessing to all who knew her and will be deeply missed.
Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 12:30pm. A private memorial service will be held to celebrate Connie's life

I noticed the library record a while back. The $15.00 price is still a bit high but better than the $22.00 price from Wayne County Vital Records.

Hi! I am a Colby cousin, descended from Anthony's son Samuel.
Before you spend any money, maybe I can help you. I live in Detroit and am a board member of the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research and we have access to the Burton Historical Collection at the main branch of the Detroit Public Library. I have checked the Wayne County Death Records on the library's website and found the death of George W. COLBY on 6/6/1946 at Eloise Hospital at age 61. A copy of a listed death record can be obtained by mail for $15.00. But I think the cost is less if you obtain it in person. The library is closed on Monday, so if you can wait until Tuesday, I will check and get back to you.
Also, I will be in Williamston, MI this Friday for lunch and can check out the cemeteries.
Can you provide some information to work with? What was George's father's name? Do you when and where he and Clarissa were married? When did they move to Michigan? When did he die?
I have been wanting to research members of the Colby Family in Michigan, so your email is perfect. It may get me going on this project. What part of the country do you call home?
I look forward to hearing from you.

Well you might actually get your money's worth from the death certificate
and here is any example. When my grandfather Charles Colby Crooks died in
1936, no one could find his grave. He had suddently developed T B and was
placed in a State T B hospital in upstate Maryland in the mountains. Well
when I started to look for him, my parents were both dead, so I contacted
the State and got his death certificate which had a ton of info on it
including his burial at the cemetery for the hospital including the plot
number.I made an appointment to visit and talk to the cemetery manager and
we couldn't find the grave, the plot was empty. He had been removed by the
family and privately re-buried, I know where but have never found the grave
as its in a national mountain park. I would have never found all of this out
without that detailed death certificate.

I am not related to these families...
Longmont Ledger (Longmont, Boulder County)
June 14, 1907
COOPER-COLBY--At the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. W. L. Page, at high
noon, Wednesday, June 12, 1907, George Cooper and Miss Iva Colby, Rev. A. L.
Chase officiating.
It was a very pleasant wedding. The decorations were roses and simlax. The
bride was dressed in white silk and carried brides roses.
Mendelssohn's wedding march was played by Miss Josephine Baird as the couple
entered and took their places. Miss Mae Page was the ring bearer and she
did part very nicely.
The wedding present were very numerous and extremely nice.
After the ceremony was performed and the congratulations were over a very
sumptuous xix course wedding breakfast was served.
The bride is well and favorably known in Longmont and Weld county, having
taught school in Weld county for several years. She is an active worker in
the M. E. church of which she is a member.
The groom is also well known in this vicinty, being an enterprising young
farmer from near Liberty Hall.
The afternoon was spent in a very enjoyable way till time to take the 5:24
train for Colorado Springs, where they will spend two weeks.
The groom thought to avoid the shower of rice and old shoes by getting a
closed cab to take him and his bride to the train. But that proved of no
avail, as all the guests took rigs and followed. When the couple alighted
the platform such a shower of rice as they received has seldom been
witnessed in this city.
All wish Mr. and Mrs. Cooper the best of happiness through life.
The will return to Longmont and make this city their future home.
Among guests were Mrs. Alkins, of Eaton, Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Nye of Ault,
Miss Josie Carr of Boulder and Mr. Brewe of Greeley.
