Just sharing a tip that has been very helpful to my research.
BillionGraves.com is a fast growing worldwide site that offers a phone app that is used to take pictures of headstones / markers with the GPS location. Images are uploaded to the site where they are transcribed by users and are then available via a search feature. http://www.billiongraves.com
*** My tip is the "Record Watch" feature that alerts you to newly transcribed markers. As an example, I have a watch set for the name Colby. Just about every time I check my email, I have at least one new Colby alert.
Please know that I have no affiliation to BillionGraves other than as a user who has walked cemeteries to take pictures and as a transcriber for others' pics - both are addicting :) P.S. I have also posted requests to have pictures taken of specific graves that are out of my area - nice feature.

Guy & Ron: Yes I mis-read your msg., but I was thinking along the lines of a
problem I have had since day 1 and that is two Ann Mooreheads both of
similar age and one buried in the Crooks Convenanter plot - in fact the
first burial there in 1773. I have long suspected she might have been a
spinster and/or widowed woem and thus related to my settlers wife, since she
would have been born in 1698, there are no church records in N. Ireland for
that period of time

hello.
just a few general remarks regarding age...
at trinity college in dublin,at least in the 1800's, they put the following year as age at entrance, perhaps with the idea of standardizing.
on a 4 x gr grandmother's (not a Colby), her death record showed her age at death as 31/32 yrs. not sure, but think she might have died just before her birthday and was buried a few days afterwards still dead , but older in the interim.
don't really know what the reasoning was…
on my own mother's death certificate, i made her a year older, mis-calculation.
and so, we can't always count on the relative giving accurate info on official documents…
didn't the 1752(?) change in the month beginning the calendar year throw things off a bit?
best,
marilyn

My first reaction was the same as yours, but on second reading, I think we may have misunderstood what Ron was trying to say. He's not talking about the difference in ages between husband and wife. I think what he means is that the William Colby who was born in 1801 cannot be the William Colby who married Phoebe Rude, because the headstone for Phoebe's husband William gives his birthdate as 1793. Since there is an 8 year difference in the birthdates, Ron says (and I agree) that it is probably not the same man.

Gordon I was talking about the age of William Colby. Headston has 1793 as
dob. William Currier Colby b. 1801
8 years, too much difference to be the same person.

I have visited all of the cemeteries where my ancestors in my line are buried back to Eliphalet, but I have not found #4. My guess is he is buried in one of the Amesbury cemeteries, but no record of that from what I know.

Kate has an excellent point! I am the only one in my family who is a dues paying member of the Association, but I have 53 direct living descendants. My father, Guy Irving Colby III, has 63 direct living descendants. My grandfather, Guy Irving Colby Jr., has 79 direct living descendants. And my great grandfather, Guy Irving Colby, has at least 175 direct living descendants, most of whom should be in your data base (I sent you a descendancy register for him a couple of years ago). I'm still working on the total for my 2nd great grandfather, William Wallace Colby, but 175 should be enough to give Isaac a sizable lead in the count (at least, until everyone else weighs in)!
Jeanne --
Good job! We're right there with you; in addition to 25 grandchildren with the Colby surname, we have a grandson named Colby Jay Reynolds, and another grandson named Adam Colby Minnich. We even have a great granddaughter named Kolbe Lee Turner (a creative way to feminize the name)!

The name Colby has been used every way possible in our Walter Colby line. It was, of course, a surname to begin with. It was then used, as is Colby tradition, as a middle name for my cousin, Betty Colby's son. Then another cousin named his son Colby, as a first name. I think we have the Colby name covered!

Incidentally, you might be interested to know that one of my grandsons is named Isaac Wallace Colby -- Isaac after Anthony's son (my 7th great grandfather), and Wallace after my 2nd great grandfather, William Wallace. How's that for preserving family heritage?

Interesting and difficult issue, counting direct descendants. For example, I am the only one of my father's children (there are 4) who has entered data and joined the association, but he now has 26 living descendants. Are they counted? I think maybe if I included them on the tree I submitted. But I haven't kept it up lately.

OK! More on the LIVING descendants project!
First - ONLY people who have provided me with their descent line AND the
permission to include the info in this LIMITED edition booklet are
included. REALLY! The booklet is only shared around at the reunion and
then gets stored with the Colby History Items that Barbara keeps safely.
In the deep dark cave in her basement. (LOL)
But Jeanne Turner raised a good question How many are there??? Since I
really have no idea how many there might be, all I can give is the info I
have in the database.
I have that there are 25,693 direct descendants of Anthony & Susannah Colby
and that there are 5,936 of them living. Of course that number changes
frequently with the on-going research and people sending in their lines and
updates from checking what is available from the website.

Please note the headstone dates for William Colby
William Colby (1793 - 1836) married abt 1830 Pheobe Rude (1806 - 1889)
There is no way that the William Currier Colby b. 1801 married Phebe Rude.
there is 8 years difference in their ages.
Prime example of someone, somewhere, taking a wild guess that turns out to
be wrong.

William Colby and Molly Currier.
He was born 27 June 1801 in Amesbury, Essex, Massachusetts
The child, William Lester had me thinking Phoebe's name was Phoebe Lester.
I had not know about Phoebe' other marriage. Good info!!
