There were two John's. the john I list lived in Albany, NY in 1800. It appears from the ad, that he lived there intil about 1817. So his sons, "John Jr", George, and Lucius, I believe were all born in Albany, not Goshen.
I have a land record copy that shows he rented\owned property in 1826. And he shows up in the 1820 Goshen Census. I haven't gotten any further on my research with this. I'm still trying to pin down his dates in Albany.
There are very few birth records in Goshen for this time frame. apparently, a preacher was asked to leave the church and he decided to burn all the birth records.

Greetings!
Interesting find for John Colby. I've been researching George Ross Colby. Many trees point to John and Annis Colby of Goshen as his parents, although I have not seen any documentation other than speculation.
There is also this:
Name:
Jonathan Colby
Marriage Date:
5 Mar 1801
Event Type:
Marriage
Marriage Place:
Weare, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire
Gender:
Male
Father's Name:
Philbrick Colby
Mother's Name:
Ruth Lufkin
Spouse Name:
Mary Bassett
Spouse Gender:
Female
FHL Film Number:
1000976
Are you thinking that Annis was a second wife of John Colby? Congratulations on your find. This is the best lead I've seen on this family yet. Other than the article from the Republican, have you found any other leads?
I'd love to talk to you privately as well.

In God We Trust
Good evening,
I've been lurking on this list for a very long time. It's been a while
since I've done any genealogy and I've done very little on my Colby family.
I decided it was time to start... lol
This is my line, starting with me.
Cindy Loraine (Corwin) Lobb, born in Michigan
Melvin John Corwin, father, born in Michigan
Grace Mae Franklin, grandmother, born in Livonia, Wayne County, Michigan
Viola A. Colby, Great-grandmother, born 1851 in Michigan
Merrill Colby, Great-great-grandfather, born 1815 in NY, married Harriett E
Sackett, born 1819 NY
I THINK Merrill's father was also named Merrill, but I don't have that info
right now... maybe from NH, but I'm not sure.
Does this fit in with anyone's family???
Thanks
Cindy Corwin Lobb
Westland, MI
Somewhere between the athlete you've become,
the hours of practice you've endured,
the coaches who pushed you,
the teammates who believed in you,
And the fans who cheered for you,
Is the little girl who fell in love with the game and has never looked
back.
Play for her.

Diane,
You can ignore the message about Hrold Colby...that has nothing to do
with us directly. Instead, go to
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.colby (etc).
When you get to the website, click on the green button at the top that
says Family Trees.
Scroll down and type in Addie Colby's father: Cornelius Colby. He
was born in Corinth, Vermont in 1834.
That should bring you to his name in blue, and it lists his father as
Calvin Colby.
Click on his name in blue, and you come to a page about him. If you
click on the word "pedigree" at the top of the page, you will come to
his complete family tree.
It gives all the Colbys men that John and I were decended from, but it
also lists all the women they married and their genealogies. There is
a ton of information here.
Cornelius Orlando Colby fought in the Civil War. He was in the
Vermont 10th Regiment. One of his ancestors, Captain John Colby,
fought in King Phillip's War in colonial days.
I'm working on finding out if any of our Colby grandfathers fought in
the American Revolution. They certainly were here, so there is a good
chance that one of them did.
If you wade through the Colbys, that will give you a lot of
information to start with.
Our great grandparents, Horace and Addie Colby, are buried in
Manchester, NH. You can find out more about them on the page for
Cornelius by clicking on decendancy. It will tell about Addie and
list Horace as her husband and tell when they were born, when they
died and where they were buried.
Our grandfather, Arthur McDuffee, remarried to Annie Lavoie. They
also divorced. Arthur died of a massive heart attack at the age of 56
while having lunch at Woolworth's at the counter.
Our grandmother, Ada, was living with Aunt Minnie in Claremont when
she died of a heart attack. Grammy Hill was a registered nurse. She
also ran boarding houses in Concord, NH, and in Orford, NH. My mother
told me that she was an excellent cook and her house was always
spotless. I learned from our cousin, Susan (Aunt Hazel's daughter)
that she played the piano by ear and sang. She had naturally curly
auburn hair. Her father, Warren Lewis, was carrot red and had huge
freckles on his arms (my mother's recollection). Grammy Hill also
smoked, and she'd let Susan smoke the butts! Susan said she was a lot
of fun. Sadly, I rarely saw her because we didn't have a car. She
would knit me hats and mittens for Christmas. I have her recipe for
pumpkin pie, which I'd be happy to share if you want it. It's the
best pumpkin pie filling that I've ever tasted.
Okay, this is the tip of the iceberg. When you have digested the
Colbys, I'll get into the McDuffees.
