Mr. Lauren Adams Colby
Mr. Lauren Adams Colby, Jr., 81, of Frederick, died on May 22, 2012 at his home. Mr. Colby was the beloved husband of Kristine S. Colby and the son of the late Lauren Adams Colby, Sr. and Sarah Decker Colby Davis.
Lauren grew up in Owego, NY, graduated from Harpur College of the State University of New York (later the State University of New York at Binghamton) and received his law degree from Syracuse University College of Law in 1955. Upon graduation, Lauren became an Attorney Adviser for two years at the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, D.C. and thereafter practiced radio broadcast law at the firm Fly, Shuebruk, Blume & Gaguine in Washington, D.C. until 1961 when he opened his own office in the capital. Having purchased radio station WTHU in Thurmont in 1971 with his former wife, Petrina Belsito Colby, he moved to Frederick County from Arlington, VA and eventually established an office where he practiced until a month before his death. Lauren was also of counsel to the firm Putbrese, Hunsaker & Trent in Woodstock, VA. He was completely devoted to his clients throughout the U.S. and highly respected by his professional colleagues for his expertise and in depth knowle!
dge of radio broadcast law. Lauren served as a mentor to many young lawyers throughout his career and was a member of the Federal Communications Bar Association, the D.C. Bar Association and the Maryland Bar Association.
An avid hobbyist, Lauren built and repaired electronic devices starting with radios as a teenager. He loved to tinker in his workshop and when computers first came out he often fixed them for friends and neighbors and greatly enjoyed the solitude and satisfaction of this endeavor. Lauren was a former licensed ham radio operator and a licensed private pilot with an instrument rating. He was passionate about flying and flew his Cessna P210 on vacations to the Caribbean, Canada and throughout the U.S. Lauren especially loved the West and the many trips to Colorado, Montana and Wyoming as well as to Moosehead Lake in Maine. Growing up during the popularity of railroads as a mode of transportation, he developed a passion for stream trains and took many rides on them with his family wherever they were running.
Lauren's other passion was his love for cigars and smoking. A smoker since law school, he was never without a cigar in his mouth. He was intellectually curious and devoted much time and research to the topic of tobacco which resulted in a publication he wrote titled "In Defense of Smoking" that was available on his web site. It generated interest and controversy from people throughout the world and Lauren was often interviewed by the press and media for his unorthodox opinions on this subject.
Lauren loved all animals, including his dog, Sarah, and cat, Benny. He was a former member of the Director's Circle at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. and a benefactor of the Panda House.
Surviving in addition to his loving wife, Kristine, are his two children: Charles Lauren Colby and wife Deborah Schloss Colby of Herndon, VA; Francesca Snarski and husband Michael Snarski of Baltimore, MD; five grandchildren: Sarah Louise Colby, Matthew Harold Colby, Nicholas James Snarski, Vincent Stanley Snarski and Peter Lauren Snarski; and a cousin, Mary Donnelly of Nichols, NY. Lauren will also be remembered by special friends Mary and Robert Zak and his two secretaries, Traci Maust and Jessecca Muskett.
Interment will be private and arrangements made by Keeney & Basford Funeral Home. A celebration of Lauren's life will be held at a future date.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Animal Welfare League of Frederick County, 1202 E. Patrick St., #13A, Frederick MD 21701; North American Bear Center, P.O. Box 161, Ely, MN 55731; and The Elephant Sanctuary, P.O. Box 393, Hohenwald, TN 38462.

Alice --
I did a little light reading, and came up with a few more clues:
Hoyt (Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury, p. 679) lists only Hannah, b. 13 Oct 1761 -- presumably because she was the only child actually born in Salisbury. However, he does include the notation, "Perhaps other children."
Weis (The Colby Family in Early America, p. 114) is considerably more helpful. He also lists only Hannah, but he notes that the 1790 census suggests the possibility of as many as eight additional children for Philip and Betty -- 2 sons, and six more daughters. The real clue, however, is his notation that Philip "was a shipwright at Salisbury and may be presumed to have been the Philip Colby, aged 23 years, who worked on batteaux at the lakes, in the French and Indian War, 1769."
I do not know what source Weis is referencing here, and there are some minor problems with the chronology. Philip was christened in Amesbury on 12 Sep 1736 (presumably as an infant), so he would indeed have been 23 in 1759 -- smack in the middle of the French and Indian War. The reference to the year 1769 is puzzling, since the war ended in 1763, but if Weis is correct in his identification, it means that Philip and Betty may have removed to what is now upstate New York following Hannah's birth ("the lakes" in that region were a major theater in the war), and that at least some of their other children could have been born in that area.
Ron's website shows the Weis reference to the 1790 census, but not his reference to Philip's possible involvement in the French and Indian War.
Happy hunting!

Yep! You know, sometimes miracles do happen! One thing on any info with this church, adult christenings are likely to be misunderstood. LOL. I have the data in my file, and now just need the time to sort out the living people and then can put it up on the website. I am THINKING I can have those sorting exports run while I am doing some minimal house cleaning in the morning. LOL With luck, while serving the mission hours Sunday afternoon I can upload the file!
I am thinking you could well be right that they went into New Hampshire. But also they may have gone to Maine??
Maybe!!! While I am in New Hampshire in their big archive / library in Concord they may just pop up! Concord is a bit further north than they are likely to have gone - but who knows! Could well be Maine.
You are right - there are very likely more kids in the middle. We will need to find them.

Nice find! I do see the 1808 adult christening in the transcribed Newburyport VRs. However, if Mary Almira married in 1813 and had eight children, I doubt that she died in 1808! :-) Looking at the transcribed Bradford VRs, I see the death of a Mrs. Mary GAGE on 31 Aug 1831 at age 77. My guess is that whoever transcribed that record for John Slaughter misread that age; I'll bet it is actually 47 (which would be two years after the birth of her youngest child, and a perfect fit for the 1784 birthdate). The transcribed Bradford VRs also show the 1842 death of a Mary K. GAGE, daughter of Jonathan. This would be Jonathan's and Mary Almira's daughter who was born in 1823; the omission of her mother's name from her death record is further evidence that Mary Almira was herself deceased by that time.
I do not find the birth of Mary Almira COLBY in the transcribed VRs for Salisbury, Amesbury, Newbury, or Newburyport. In fact, the only child I see in those VRs for Philip COLBY and Betsy (or Bette, or Betty) RING is Mary's much older sister, Hannah COLBY, b. 13 Oct 1761 in Salisbury. Hannah is also the only child that you and Ron list for this couple on your websites. Given the 23 year age spread between Hannah and Mary Almira, it seems probable that there were other children as well. Philip and Betsey seem to have moved around a good bit; perhaps they strayed across the border into southern New Hampshire (as so many of my Essex County relatives seem to have done, in a deliberate attempt to elude me!)?
Presumably, now that you and Ron have Mary Almira and Jonathan on your radar screens, you can add them and their eight children to your websites!

Guy

HA!! She is the daughter of Philip Colby and Betsey Ring. She was born in Salisbury in 1784, christened in Newburyport 28 August 1808 and died in Bradford 28 August 1808. Sometimes the stuff I have squirelled away comes in handy! It is the adult christening that throws things off looking at her as marrying in 1813.

I came across this couple while trolling through John Slaughter's massive Massachusetts VR transcription website. They were married in Bradford, Essex Co., a town which no longer exists (the eastern portion was separated in 1850 and incorporated as Groveland, and the western portion was annexed by Haverhill in 1897).
Bradford VRs record eight children for Jonathan and Mary, born between 1814 and 1829. Given the location and time frame, it is unlikely that Mary lies anywhere close to my direct COLBY line. However, my interest was piqued by the fact that I cannot find this family on any of the COLBY websites (Ron's, Alice's, Deborah's etc.).
Can anyone identify the parents of Mary Almira COLBY?

This is a note from Weis's book in regards to Phillip Colby and Betty Ring.
"1790 census lists the family as 3-1-8. Two sons and six other daughters not found."
If we have any orphan Colby family heads born between 1761 and 1784 in MA this might be where mthey fit in.

Regards,
Guy

Perhaps, but it seems more likely that Alice has made the correct identification in pinpointing her as the daughter of Philip COLBY and Betsey (or Bette, or Betty) RING, christened 28 Aug 1808 at age 24 in Newburyport.

This Colby, either. Dan used to have a Toshiba laptop when he owned his dental practice. He used PC Anywhere to get into his office records. It developed two different viruses and had other issues. Meanwhile, both our daughters and I had Macs. Our younger daughter told me, "When Dad retires, I'm going to throw his Toshiba off the back of a fast-moving truck!"
Dan retired a year and a half ago. He and I both have an iMac, he has a MacBook Air for travel; I have a MacBook Pro that goes everywhere with me and also gets used most often at home. Lauren has a MacBook, as does Lindsay. Lauren's boyfriend works for Google so has whichever Apple laptop has most recently emerged, since Google buys everything for him - including all his meals while he is on the premises.
There is a Mac power cable plugged in behind the couch. It's used to plug into whomever's laptop needs power.
Dan did find a use for the Toshiba. He has it plugged into the tuner (?) and uses it for Pandora stations.

Bob, I couldn't agree more! our hard drive crashed in April (just after I
filed our extension for taxes! lol) I am so glad we have Carbonite. the
only down side is that although they are constantly backing up your files
while you are connected to the internet... it took about 8 DAYS to restore
all of the files!!!! it was a slow process but at least everything was
saved... had a few issues with AOL and iTunes files but I think we now have
everything in order. I think Carbonite is about $65/yr...they have a couple
different programs now. If you listen to radio, there are some on air
personalties that promote carbonite and you can get a discount or a couple
months free... I know Rush Limbaugh promotes Carbonite. I think Sean Hannity
does Moxy.... look at their websites to find out how to get the
discounts...

Somewhere between the athlete you've become,
the hours of practice you've endured,
the coaches who pushed you,
the teammates who believed in you,
And the fans who cheered for you,
Is the little girl who fell in love with the game and has never looked
back.
Play for her.

I suggest everyone consider an on-line back-up service such as Mozy or
Carbonite. They cost abot $5 per month. All of my computer data is backed
up every night. if I have a crash, I can reload all or part of my files
from the back-up. I would never lose more that 24 hours of new data.
Great peace of mind, especially for my Family Tree Maker file of 31,000
names and almost 10,000 marriages. Same feeling for my financial files and
my two genealoy books in Word documents.
