I found the information you sent very interesting. Enos Edward Bohannan, b. 22 Jan 1914, Marjorie Gertrude Bohannan and Dorothy Isabella Bohannan's father was John Orville Bohannan. Did Edmund adopt them with their last name changing to
COLBY? In the vital records for David Lee Colby it gave his father as Richard Earl Colby but Richard d. 17 Nov 1947, so
David's father had to be someone else. Also there is a Robert Leo Colby listed as b. 25 May 1951 with his father listed as
unknown. See on the findagrave site that Richard Earl Colby is buried in Jericho Center Cemetery and also in Enos
Colby's obituary it says he is buried in Jericho Center Cemetery also. Are they in the same plot?
I have Richard earl Colby's son Michael Alan m. (1) Carol L. Jordan m. 27 Mar 1965 and divorced 8 Jul 1975
m. (2) Alma M. (Pratt) Thibault 19 Mar 1978
Children: Michael Alan jr., Lee Ann and Melissa Sue.
Have you checked out the COLBY FAMILY & OTHERS site? They have a COLBY family reunion each year and
in 2013 it is going to be held in Orange, Vt. I hope to be able to get my material together and attend. I live in
White River Jct., Vt, so it is only about 1 1/2 hour drive.

Regarding graves in the County where my ancestor settled I have found every single grave except 3 and I know where they are (burial transfer) and while doing this saw how poorly some of them were kept, however I am fortunate to be in a County where all 79,000 early graves are recorded and where many old cemeteries are maintained by the townspeople. I am missing 2 Colby's but I know where they are buried and their stone or stones are missing. On the other hand in the town that the Colby;s lived I can find 7 different surnames, Colby, Crooks , Metcalfe, Dix, Engle, plus a couple of married surnames of some of ther Colby girls in the Lutheran Cementery.Pennsylvania as a State has very poor and lax cemetery laws and many are under the plow !
Gordon
Guy,
If it is any source of hope, in my own family experience (even
speaking for myself) and that of friends, often people don't really
get interested in family history until they reach middle age, when
their own mortality becomes a reality! My own daughters had
absolutely no interest until now that they are in their 40s. They
aren't ready to do any research, but they are grateful for what I have
done. I have confidence that they will pass the info down to their
kids when the time is right.

Yes Guy, my post was something to stimulate some discussion amongst us and share ideas to maybe spark some interest in at least one of our younger generation to preserve ours and their family histories to pass on to future generations.
10 Ways To Pass On Your Family History To Your Children
http://www.essortment.com/10-ways-pass-family-history-children-58344.html
Everyone has a story to tell.
Some people may mistakenly believe they have nothing of importance to pass on to others...no legacy they can leave. You don’t have to be wealthy, famous, or talented to leave a meaningful legacy for your descendants. Some of the most inspirational, enduring legacies are from people outside of history books and newspaper headlines. Everyday, plain ordinary people are creating and passing down inspirational, historical legacies. And you can also.

Will Anyone Know Who You Are?

Bob --
Thanks so much for your thought-provoking comments; my "cousin connection" experiences have been very similar to yours.
With regard to "passing the torch" to the next generation of family historians, I admit that it is a matter which gives me some concern. One possible answer is to do as Gordon Crooks suggested in his message and bequeath everything to a selected repository. However, I have not yet given up on my children and grandchildren. There are several who show some indication of interest beyond just a passing curiosity, and in the years to come, I am hopeful that their nascent interest will continue to blossom. I am still reasonably young and healthy -- I will be 70 next week -- and I ought to be good for a few more years yet!

Guy speaking from experience you have about 10 more decent years left, at
which point you will probably start to really show your age such as I have
in the last year and I will be 81 in September. Rather than looking into
crystal balls, look at your female relatives. If they all lived to ripe ages
you can expect to do almost the same. That being said so much for the
"weaker sex"

Gravesites of veterans in shocking disrepair
By Mike Jaccarino
Published May 24, 2012 | FoxNews.com
The final resting places for many of the men and women who fought
America’s wars have fallen into shocking disrepair, with neglect, theft
and vandalism prompting veterans groups to question the nation's
commitment to honoring its dead soldiers.
Advocates say smaller federal, state, county and private cemeteries
that contain the graves of service members are often poorly kept, marked
by crumbling headstones, overgrown with weeds and littered with debris.
Perhaps even worse, many veterans' gravesites have been targets of
vandalism and theft.
“It’s a pattern that you’re seeing across the country right now,"
said Tim Tetz, national legislative director for the American Legion.
"You have cemeteries being expanded or added to with less or the same
number of people caring for the grounds.”
Vietnam veteran and retired Army Capt. Ronald Rulon told FoxNews.com
he felt his heart drop when he heard that 200 bronze flag stands had
been stolen from a local veterans' cemetery where many of his friends
and fellow soldiers are buried.

Most of us have reached out and contacted newly discovered cousins during our family history searches, people that we never heard of before, but most we never thought about when we were younger and concerned with our lives as kids and young adults.
Many of us have had some good experiences with reaching out and communicating with the long lost cousins, but sometimes a few of those new found cousins would rather not communicate because of everything from thoughts of uncovering skeletons or thoughts of "what does this person want from me.?"
Anyway it has been an adventure over all of these years of seeking family genealogy information.
I know that most of us family historians look for at least one grandchild, nephew, niece or younger cousin to take on the mantle of this family history search and hope that one of them will take on the role of keeper of the records that we have accumulated.
Something to think about.
Bob Colby

Here is a link to a brief obituary for Linda Mae Colby, my 1st cousin once removed.
http://www.andreasons.com/2011/03/linda-colby/
Linda was the last surviving grandchild of my great grandfather, Guy Irving Colby; her father, Logan Hall Colby, was the half brother of my grandfather, Guy Irving Colby Jr. Logan was 23 years younger than my grandfather, and my father had long ago lost touch with that branch of the family. After considerable searching, I located Linda in 2004, and we enjoyed exchanging photos, family history correspondence, and occasional phone calls until her Alzheimer's progressed to the point that it affected her communication skills. I am saddened to learn of her passing.

Here is another one! Can anyone identify the parents of this Edwin or
Edward??
Edwin or Edward E. or J. Colby born 25 August 1848, probably in Maine; died
12 Feb 1888 in Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, California.
He married Emma Josephine Logan 4 October 1885 in Sisquoc, Santa Barbara,
California. She was born Sep. 1865 Mendocino, California.
They had 2 daughters: Edna born Oct. 1886 and Ethel born 19 April 1888.
Emma married Henslow Phillips in 1889 and Emma & the girls are listed with
him in the 1900 census.
Anyone know this person??

Subject: [COLBY] Samuel Colby born in Cazenovia, Madison, New York
Wonderful, helpful Colby Cousins!!
I have been chasing this guy and he has gone to ground on me!!! Can anyone
identify him?
Samuel Colby as born in Cazenovia, Madison, New York probably in 1792. He
married Achsah Felt who was born 27 October 1800 in Hamilton, Madison, New
York. Probable marriage would have been 1824 +/-.
They had 6 chidren: Cherrill born May 1821; Robert B(ruce) born 23 January
1826; Mary Eliza born 1828; Buell born 1830; Samuel born 1832 and Fanny
born 1834. Buell & Fanny died as babies. Maybe Mary Eliza, too - I don't
know about her.
Does anyone have some good knowledge of the Colbys in New York at that time
and could help identify his parents?

To the List --
My daughter brought this obit to my attention; any of you Colby supersleuths
know where she fits in? According to the obit, she was the daughter of an
Edwin Colby and Gladys Busse.
SYCAMORE - Barbara A. Linville, 74, of Sycamore, Ill., and Fort Worth/Dido,
Texas, passed from this world on Monday, April 23, 2012, at Texas Health
Harris Hospital in Fort Worth.
She was born Feb. 17, 1938, in Rochelle, to Edwin and Gladys (Busse) Colby.
Her family lived in Lee until they moved to DeKalb, where she met some of
her lifelong friends.
She attended DeKalb High School. She met the love of her life, John E.
Linville, while they each were on dates with other people. They were married
in Crown Point, Ind. They spent their lives as Sycamore residents and became
snowbirds when John retired from the Sycamore Fire Department. A daughter
came from this union.
She was a member of the Sycamore United Methodist Church, and attended Dido
United Methodist Church and Lighthouse Fellowship Church, both in Fort
Worth.
Barbara spent her life making their house a welcome home for so many. She
was a kind and gentle soul, yet was independent and fiercely loyal to those
close to her. She was known for her Swedish egg coffee, which she learned to
make from John's grandmother. There was always someone stopping by to say
hello and share a cup. Although she only briefly worked outside the home,
she could fix just about any small appliance or piece of jewelry. She spent
12 years traveling with Marlyn's Majorettes, to which her daughter was a
member. She had many interests, including country and western music, the
rodeo and auto racing. She loved traveling, going to the casinos and being
near the lake. For many years, they spent spare time in Delavan, Wis. During
the time they lived in Fort Worth near their daughter's family, they easily
became part of their Eagle Mountain Lake community.
She is survived by her daughter, Vickie (Mike) Palmer of Fort Worth; three
grandchildren, Lindsey (Corey) Farra of Roanoke, Texas, Lauren Palmer
(fiancé Capt. Dave Bryant) of San Antonio, Texas, and Matt Palmer of Fort
Worth; sister-in-law, Josephine Fisher of Chicago; three nephews, Walt
Fisher, Wayne (Patti) Fisher and Wes (Fran) Fisher, and a niece, Charlene
(Mike) Gustafson, all of Chicago; many other family and friends; and her
furry, four-legged companion, Rufus.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Charles Fisher; and her
loving husband, John in 2003.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28, at Olson Funeral
& Cremation Ltd., Quiram Sycamore Funeral Chapel, 1245 Somonauk St.,
Sycamore, IL 60178, with the Rev. C. William Landis officiating. Burial will
follow at Elmwood Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.
Friday at the funeral chapel.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Fort Worth. A memorial
fund has been established.
For further information or to leave a message of condolence, visit
www.OlsonFH.com or call 815-895-6589.
She will be deeply missed by her loved ones and the many people whose life
she touched.
