Ron, and all,
It makes it difficult when searching for a name and the individual only
lists their first initials.
Anyone know the first name and family line of this Colby?
Here is what I found online:
C.J. COLBY
President, Board of Education, Creston Public Schools, Creston Assessor,
There is a photo of him in the pdf version of his book. Page 121.

C. J. COLBY was born in Bureau Count}', Illinois,
August 27, 18t0, and was the only child of his parents,
who resided on a farm settled by tlieni in 1839. His life.
up to the age of 15, was spent on the farm, except at such
times as he was absent from home attending school. His
educational advantages were fair, but only embraced a com-
mon English education. In 1855, his parents concluded
to remove to some point where school privileges were better
than their farm life afforded, and they resided in La Salle,
111., for one year, after which they removed to Tiskilwa,
111., and bought property there, making a fine, permanent
home. In 1857-8, the subject of this sketch entered a
store and worked l)y the month for six years, when, his

business until 1866, when he started in the dry goods busi-
ness on his own account, in Tiskilwa, where he remained
until 1872, when he removed to Creston, Iowa, and was
engaged in the general retail trade until December, 1874,
when financial embarrassments resulted in the failure of
the firm. Since the above date he has been engaged in
settling up the complicated affairs of the firm. During the
present season he has been engaged in surveying and pub-
lishing the Sketches, Map and Directory of Union County.
He was married, December 13, 1866, to Miss Annie W.

Death Of Bainbridge
Dean
Severing of the Femoral
Artery and Draining of his Life Blood
A Tiskilwa correspondent
gives us some details that seem necessary to a full understand and just
appreciation of the sad circumstances connected with the death of Bainbridge
K. Dean: and which necessarily reflects upon young Mills, who is alleged
enticed the deceased away from his pleasant home.
Briefly the story is this:
The father of Bainbridge, Mr. C. A. Dean, left Tiskilwa about the 23rd.
of February, in company with Messrs. Gudgel and Mullin, each having a car
load of horses for the Minnesota market. After Mr. Dean had left home,
young Mills, who is the son of saloon keeper of Tiskilwa, commenced teasing
young Dean to go west with him. At first Bainbridge resisted the overtures;
but by persistent effort he at last persuaded Dean to go with him, and
they left for Creston, Iowa, on the night of March 18th, some two weeks
before Mr. Dean returned from Minnesota. On his return he wrote to Mr.
C. J. Colby, of Creston, Iowa, a warm personal friend of Mr. Dean;, and
a former resident of Tiskilwa, to keep watch of his boy's movements and
as soon as he felt like returning home to supply him with the necessary
means. This duty Mr. C. had performed until some three weeks ago, when
he left Creston for the east to make his usual purchase of goods, and to
spend a short time among old friends in Tiskilwa. The day before Mr. Colby
returned to Creston, it seems young Mills had persuaded the boy to embark
with him to Kearney Junction. They reached Council Bluffs the same evening,
and the rest of the story is given elsewhere. What more can we say?

There are 3 family trees on Ancestry.com that state her parents as Joseph M
Colby & Mary Peake.
On the 1880 census she states both her parents were born in Massachusetts. I
would guess that the father would have been born about 1790 or maybe earlier
in she has siblings.
Ploomy named her 1st child Mary perhaps she was named in honor of her
mother?
Pluma Blunt died 01 Aug 1887, Antrim, Merrimack, New Hampshire
