ZENAS J.11 COLBY, b. 1840, New York; d. February 14, 1865, Washington, DC.
Notes for ZENAS J. COLBY:
Cival War Military Records from the National Archives show that he was drafted and mustered in as a Private, Company H, 23rd Regiment of the Michigan Infantry on Sept. 29, 1864. He was stationed at Jackson, Michigan on Oct. 24, 1864. Company muster roll for Jan. and Feb. 1865 says that he was absent; that is, "Sick at Alexander [Alexandria], Virginia since Feb.8 1865." Other documents indicate he was assigned to Camp Stoneman, Washington, DC. and that he was admitted to Douglas U.S. General Hospital (Hospital #6499) on Feb.4, 1865 with acute bronchitis. Zenas "died [in the hospital] at 3 P.M. Feb. 14, 1865 of Pneumonia." His mother, Eliza A. Colby, Perry, Shiawassy [Shiawassee] Co., MI, signed for the following "...articles comprising all the effects left...by Zenas Colby..."; 1 cap, 1 blouse, 1 trowser, 3 shirts, 2 drawers, 1 great coat, 2 blankets, watch & chain (Silver), and 1 knapsack. Zenas was buried on Feb. 15, 1865 at an unspecified location.

Ron,
I read an article in the current issue of The American Legion Magazine titled Arlington Remembered - Honor. Remember. Explore. A review of 259,978 gravesites and more than 510,000 records at
Arlington National Cemetery has identified 64,230 cases of potential
problems that range from minor mistakes in files to errors on
gravestones, according to a U.S. Army. The cemetery is now working on resolving the mistakes.
The Arlington National Cemetery now has a new interactive website searchable by name with photos of gravestones and gravesite map.

Charles L Colby house in New York
http://daytoninmanhattan.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-1893-chas-l-colby-house...
In the spring of 1890 Charles L. Colby was one of the wealthiest and most
powerful men in New York City. A close friend of John D. Rockefeller, Sr.,
he oversaw his family's extensive railroad interests and sat on the board of
directors of the Northern Pacific Railroad among others.
Colby set out that year to erect a new, impressive mansion-a reflection of
his status in the social and industrial world. On May 24, 1890 the Real
Estate Record and Builders' Guide announced that "Mrs. Robert L. Stuart has
sold to Charles L. Colby the lot. on the south side of 69th Street, 175 feet
east of 5th Avenue, for $40,000. Mr. Colby has also purchased from Waldemar
Caspary the lot, 30x100, adjoining the above, on private terms. Mr. Colby
will erect a 55-foot front house on these lots."
That building certainly has had an interesting history. From Anthony Colby's
swamp land to East 69th Street!

Thanks for your views/research. Anthony and Susanna(h) Colby are my 10th great-grandparents and tracking lineage has been daunting. I review all the claims and try to go with the ones that seem the most logical and have footnotes that can be substantiated in the long-run. I shy away from "family history" claims out of Utah, as well as Son's of the American Revolution, as these are so often "tainted" by lack of historical context and fact.
Nice to see that a Colby is out there questioning! Can you tell me if your line includes the Bradbury/George line.
Thanks, Lorraine

Frances Marie Colby
(January 21, 1930 - December 16, 2012)
Frances Marie Colby, 82 years old, passed away December 16, 2012, at Valley Vista Care in Sandpoint, Idaho. A Memorial Service will be held at Bonners Ferry Funeral Home Wednesday, December 19, at 11:00 a.m. with Minister Ben Nystrom officiating.
Frances was born to Ole and Rosa Brown at Dunn Center, North Dakota, January 21, 1930, the fourth of their five children. She grew up on the family farm in Dunn County. She was baptized and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church and spent her early school years in Dunn County and in Osage, Iowa.
When Frances was a teenager, her mother developed cancer and Frances missed a year of schooling to stay at home and care for her. After her mother died, Frances, her father and her younger sister moved west to St. Maries, Idaho, where she continued her education and graduated from St. Maries High School in 1949.
It was in St. Maries that Frances met her true love, Lyle Colby. They met on a blind date arranged by Frances' aunt and uncle. She often recounted how it was a wonder she ever went out with him a second time because Lyle fell asleep on their first date. They were married in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, February 26, 1949, and made their home in St. Maries where Lyle was employed with Safeway Stores.
Their marriage was blessed with three daughters, Linda Marie, born June 14, 1951; Vicki Lynn, born July 7, 1952; and Dianne Joyce, born June 5, 1956. Lyle's career with Safeway moved them to Spokane, WA, Omak, WA, and Sandpoint, ID. She and Lyle operated a small dairy and raised beef cattle. In 1970 they settled in Bonners Ferry. Frances cooked at Three Mile Restaurant for Jim and Nadine Jackson, at Valley View School, and at Cone's Café and Grocery which she and Lyle owned and operated from 1976 till 1981. She was also a home health care provider for several of the county's elderly. She was a hard worker and expected those who worked for her to do the same.
Frances was a Master Food Preserver. She loved to garden and can. She raised beautiful dahlias and cannas and was an excellent seamstress, always sewing clothes and quilts for her family. She enjoyed her cows and regularly attended the weekly livestock auctions where she was known to haul baby calves home in the backseat of her car. Her coffee pot was always on and her cookie jar was never empty.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Bonners Ferry and taught Sunday School there for many years. After Lyle retired they travelled across the United States with their camper and spent many happy days camping at the local lakes. Lyle passed away in 2007 and Frances eventually moved to Sandpoint where she resided at Life Care Center. Recently she moved to Valley Vista Care where she was living at the time of her passing.
Preceding Frances in death were her husband Lyle, her parents and her siblings: Adaline Straub, Opal Boyd, Richard Brown and Joyce Shippy. She is survived by her daughters Linda (Mike) Ashby of Bonners Ferry; Vicki (Troy) Blake of Burbank, WA; and Dianne (Joe) Cousins of Sagle, ID. She leaves behind thirteen grandchildren and their families: Tanya (Ben)Nystrom, Audrey, Wallace, Clayton and Anders; Brian (Susannah) Ashby, Hope and Alvin; Allen (Jennifer) Ashby, Andrew and Eli; Amanda (Scott) McGillivray, Levi and Ellie; Lisa (Jamy) Landis, Joella, Aleyah, Dinah, Eva and Hannah; Thomas (Anika) Blake and Brylee; Kristen (Greg) Ditty, Isaic, Deven, Ethen and Averi; Travis (Kimberly) Blake, Troy, Tanner and Madison; Stacey (Kevin) Kennedy, Austin, Shaylynn and Cameron; Heather Conard; Jeffery (Simi) Conard; Chris (Brianna) Cousins, Chyah and Joseph; and Stephen (Kellye) Cousins. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Frances will be laid to rest at Grandview Cemetery. Please sign her guest book at www.bonnersferryfuneralhome.com.

there is a lamarre website, beginning with Walter De La Mare as the
first and eventually going into lamarre.
you would have to type it into google.
he came very early to north america. 16oo's ... marie josephte is on
that site m. to( john colby) written as "Jean Colbie",as irecall.
there is also the millie surprenant family site by richard metivier
which mentions genevieve lamarre daughter of jean lamarre and
francoise jolivet , one of their eleven children (big families in
those days).genevieve had a daughter by the same name baptised 19 Mar
1754 and the godmother (marraine) was marie-josephte lamarre, which
was the first name given to another of genevieve's daughters. since
genevieve and marie-josephte have the same parents, (source: marie-
josephte and john's marriage certificate) they are sisters. the "e" at
the end of marie josephte may be an old spelling indicating feminine
gender as opposed to joseph.
genevieve's son was buried 13 Apr 1758 at St-Philippe de Lapraire, Qc
i think it may still be listed on the web. it is in english under the
name---the millie surprenant tree.
if jean-baptiste was still alive and stayed behind, it would seem he
had a lot of relatives to care for him. he also may have died young
since genevieve had a son who died in 1759 and one in 1762, baptised
and buried the next day
there is nothing more on the site for marie-josephte. her sister is
listed as being being married in LaPrairie, Quebec 19 May , 1749.
the source for the above on the website was YVON.FTW (don't know what
that is.
you may also find this site of interest:
www.genealogie.umontreal.ca/en/nomsPrenoms.htm
there are tons of genealogy info on it.
it has both french and english versions and will give you a bit of
history and genealogy of the New France where john (Jean) spent some
time. it says of the 400,000 children born in New France before 1800,
the first most popular names were... you guessed it ---jean baptiste
(patron saint of the french) and marie-josephe.
i am curious. where does the info come from that said that jean-
baptiste was left behind when they left for new england? what year did
they come back?
