To All --
Previous research on my great grandfather's brother, William Rufus COLBY (1844-1913), suggested that he had married only twice:
a.. About 1870 to Mary GALLOWAY (1847-1910)
b.. About 1912 to Clara P. BOYER (1860-1927)
Quite unexpectedly, I believe I may have discovered another heretofore unsuspected wife. While researching William's life in more detail, I learned that he had served during the Civil War in Co. K of the 6th Independent Battery, New York Light Artillery, which mustered in at New York City on 15 Jun 1861. William gave his age at enlistment as 19 (he was actually just short of his 17th birthday). This unit participated in McClellan's Peninsular Campaign during the first half of 1862, following which it was redeployed in defense of Washington, D.C. According to William's service record, he deserted on 16 Dec 1862. Apparently, he returned to his parents' home in Lawrence, Massachusetts; the 1864 Lawrence city directory lists him as boarding there, and it also makes specific note of his military affiliation (which is how I learned of it).
The 1865 Massachusetts state census for Lawrence (taken 25 May) also listed William in his father's household. His age was given as 21 (though he was still a month and a half shy of his 21st birthday), and his marital status was shown as married. The very next line on the census form listed an Elizabeth C. COLBY, age 29, married, born in Virginia. William had no sister named Elizabeth, and inasmuch as the only other married adults listed in the household (aside from William's parents) were his brother and sister-in-law, George Moses COLBY and Henrietta Sophia HARRIS, it seems logical to conclude that Elizabeth was William's wife.
If this be so, then William's marriage to Elizabeth did not last, since he married Mary GALLOWAY about 1870. I have not found Elizabeth (or William, for that matter) on the 1870 census, but in 1880, she was keeping house for her elderly father in Rockingham Co., Virginia. Her father was a widower blacksmith named Peter SIPE, age 83, born in Pennsylvania, and on this census (taken 3 Jun), she was listed as Elizabeth C. COLBY, age 44, widowed, born in Virginia. William, of course, was still very much alive, but it was not at all uncommon in that era for divorced women to represent themselves as widows. Also in this household in 1880 were Elizabeth's widower brother Archibald H. SIPE, age 41, likewise a blacksmith; her unmarried sister Emma J. SIPE, age 29; and three of Peter's minor grandchildren (presumably, Archibald's children).
This SIPE family had been in Rockingham Co. since at least 1840, but after Peter's death (25 Jun 1884, at the age of 88), they went west. Archibald had remarried shortly after the 1880 census was taken, and sometime after the birth of his youngest child in 1893, he and his family moved to the brand new state of North Dakota; they were enumerated there in Towner Co. in 1900. On the same census page, working as a servant only four households away, appeared the name of Betty SIPE, age 64, born April 1836 in Virginia, father born in Pennsylvania. She was listed as a widow, mother of zero children. It seems highly probable that this is Archibald's sister Elizabeth, once again using her maiden name. In 1910, Archibald and his family were in neighboring Rolette Co., but I can find no listing for Elizabeth.
Despite the fact that I have no conclusive proof of this marriage, the evidence for it seems substantial. In 1850, Elizabeth was enumerated in her father's household in Rockingham Co., and although I cannot find her in 1860, my surmise is that William may have become acquainted with her while on military duty in Virginia. I feel confident enough about this to add this marriage to my data base.
Comments, anyone?

Myrna: You will be happy to hear that I sometimes in the Winter cook on my
wood stove, things like stew or homemade soup, when not cooking then it has
a pot of water on it which creates a nice moist warm air flow. My house is
15 rooms and 3375 sq ft of space on e levels and the heating bill exceeds
$1500.00 a season. I burn 2 or more cords of wood every Winter, all of which
comes from my woods. Anthony Colby appeared to be tight fisted and so am I.

Yes many Pennsylvania counties , especially the early settled ones follow
nameing patterns of N. Ireland. Example their are township and for Franklin
Co., Pa. there are 17 of them, there are no city, but there are villages,
broughs etc. You see such names as Scotland, Greencastle, Lurgan all Scots
name places

Dear Colby Clan,
I can't help noticing that nobody has mentioned Monterey Jack cheese -
and there is a good reason for that.
It makes lousy grilled cheese sandwiches! It does not have the kick we
all want. I just want you all to know
that Monterey Jack came from the Franciscans during the 1700s, so it
was brought over from Spain. It did NOT
originate here in Monterey, CA.
That said, our younger daughter, Lauren, was earning an MA in U.S.
History when I connected with Ron and discovered
our Colby roots. Lauren was so excited to discover that her 9th g
grandfather came over with the Winthrop Fleet. In
fact, she wrote her Masters thesis on slavery in Massachusetts Bay
Colony and is now teaching high school U.S.
and World History.
But that was then. Now Lauren is a little concerned that she is a
member of a huge gene pool from all over the country
that's spent the last two days discussing grilled cheese
sandwiches! :-) She does eat her share.
Jeanne Turner
My grandson's version of a cheese sandwich.
Make a cheese sandwich with 2 slices of toast, then put in microwave to melt
cheese.
Pretty good for a 10 year old.
Until a few years ago I purchased a selection of cheeses from Holland where
I had visited some years ago, but they go so pricey and started to cut
corners I stopped buying from them.
