3. COLBY - The Colby Family in Early America, by Frederick Lewis Weis
(1970), p. 275: “Benjamin COLBY - son of Eliphalet and Apphia (Flanders)
COLBY was born in Henniker, N.H., 20 Oct. 1782 and he died there, 27 August
1837. He married Hannah ROWELL.” Names of children follow in text as:
Daniel, Samuel, Apphia, Clarissa and Charles M. History of the Town of
Henniker, Merrimack Co., NH 1835-1880, by Leander W. Cogswell (1880), p.
517: Children of Eliphalet and Apphia Flanders Colby include #19 Benjamin b.
Oct. 20, 1782; d. Aug. 27, 1837. In both publications above the death date
for Benjamin Colby is in error, as is place of death in the first reference.
He and his wife Hannah (Rowell) migrated to Middleburg Twp., Cuyahoga Co.,
Ohio, before 1827 (History of Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, compiled by Crisfield
Johnson; also 1830 Federal Census for Ohio). Both were still living Oct. 10,
1860, when they signed a deed for land they sold in this same
locality. The 1870 census enumerated Benjamin Colby in Iowa with his
daughter Clarissa Colby Miller and her husband. His wife Hannah’s name did
not appear in that household. She may have died between 1860 and 1870.
Benjamin’s death date was certainly after 1870. (Above information from
research of Delmar H. Colby, 30984 Tinkerbell Ln., Shingletown, CA 96088)

281. BENJAMIN8 COLBY (ELIPHALET7, ELIPHALET6, ISSAC5, HANNAH4 GATCHELL,
SAMUELL3, SAMUEL2, UNKNOWN FATHER1) was born 20 Oct 1782 in Henniker, New
Hampshire, and died 10 Apr 1872 in Shalersville, Ohio. He married HANNAH
SOPHIA ROWELL 30 Sep 1804 in Merimack County, Henniker, New Hampshire. She
was born 03 Jan 1785 in Henniker, Merimack County, New Hampshire, and died
01 Apr 1869.
Notes for BENJAMIN COLBY:
Benjamin was in the War of 1812 in the navy on Lake Erie under McDonnaugh.
Another source states Private on Yatch, Lake Champlain. He was enlisted in
the 114 Regiment (Rice's) New York Militia as a Private. Commencement of
service 8 September, 1814 to 22 September, 1814 with the pay per month of 8
dollars. He received four dollars. He also made application for
reimbursement of his military clothing.
Benjamin appears in the 1870 Census living in Urbana Township, Monroe
County, Albia post office, Iowa. He lived with his daughter, Clarissa and
her husband, Charles Miller. Benjamin applied for bounty land on April 10,
1855. There are 10 to 12 different property deeds for land Benjamin held
over the years.
Notes for HANNAH SOPHIA ROWELL:
Hannah Rowell's parents were wealthy and disinherited her with one dollar
when she married. Hannah cooked, washed and did work for sixteen men while
they burned lime for the New York State Prison at Auburn. She could spin and
weave in both wool and flax. She wove double coverlets.
She appears in the 1850 Census as being 65 years old and birthplace is New
Hampshire.
Children of BENJAMIN COLBY and HANNAH ROWELL are:
i. DANIEL9 COLBY, b. 1803, New Hampshire; d. 17 Jun 1895, Ohio; m. CORDELIA
NEWELL, Abt. 1830; b. 1810; d. 12 Feb 1898.
ii. APPHIA COLBY, b. 1813, Henniker, New Hampshire; d. 17 Jun 1895; m.
PALMER GARDNER, 17 Nov 1831, Cuyahoga County, Ohio; b. 1813, New York.
iii. SAMUEL COLBY, b. 06 Aug 1815, New York; d. 24 Feb, Shalersville, Ohio;
m. SUSANNAH ELDERWORK, 16 Jul 1837; b. 18 Mar 1818, Walkerville,
Pennsylvania.
iv. CLARISSA TYLER COLBY, b. 06 Feb 1820, Avon, Ohio; d. 14 Feb 1894,
Blakesburg, Iowa; m. CHARLES ALANSON MILLER, 30 May 1841, Ravenna, Ohio; b.
20 Jul 1817, Gennessee County, New York; d. 20 Apr 1908, Blakesburg, Iowa.
Notes for CHARLES ALANSON MILLER:
Appears in the 1870 Census, occupation listed as farmer. Value of real
estate is 14,000 and personal property as 1440. Migrated from Wayne County,
Ohio to Urban Twp, Monroe County, in 1835. Active in County politics,
republican. In 1870, Benjamin Colby, 88, was living with them. Benjamin was
born in New Hampshire.
v. CHARLES MILES COLBY, b. 31 Mar 1826, Ohio; d. 27 Jan 1890, Long Island,
Kansas; m. (1) AMELIA M. THOMPSON; b. 1831; d. Abt. 1865, Onondago Village
Cemetery, Ingham County, Michigan; m. (2) MARY S. DILLION, 08 Dec 1865; b.
23 Aug 1841; d. 20 Feb 1919, Long Island, Kansas.
Notes for CHARLES MILES COLBY:
According to web posting by Alice Burley, it appears Charles was married
three times and had nine children. The way the information appears on a
typewritten page, it is hard to determine if the children listed are his
kids or grandkids. There is Amelia Thompson, then a Mary Dillion and then a
Mary Colby in the left column with, Joel, Mary, Daniel, Mansfield Dillion,
Marion Dillon, Clara Dillon, William Miles, Florence and Charles Ira in the
right hand column.

Hi Bob, I’m not sure if you are still researching your relatives. I found an
old Colby-L list in the archives where you stated that Benjamin Colby was
cousin to your ggg grandfather. You also said he had served in the war of
1812. I’m wondering where I could also find this information. Was Benjamin
in the battle of Lake Erie? He was a sailor later, hauling limestone from
Cunningham’s Island (later Kelly’s) to New York. Once a sailor, always a
sailor in my own experience. Benjamin and Hannah Sohia are my ggg
grandparents. Thanks, Michelle Colby Richmondm.richmond2(a)cox.net

Hi there,
I have just returned from a short trip to Yarmouth in search of my ancestor's family who were shipwrights from Yarmouth. This ancestor named "Shipp" moved from Yarmouth to Woolwich in about 1812-14 and I was trying to find out why.
I found the following information written on a tourist information notice at a viewpoint facing the South Quay:
"Swift's Quay (No.3)...In 1806 an armoury and Naval arsenal were erected on the site now occupied by B.J. Services. It was designed to contain sufficient stores for sea service during the war with France in the early part of the 19th century to equip two sail of the line, four frigates and six sloops and to furnish 10,000 stand of arms. At the end of the Napoleonic War the arms were sent to the Tower of London and the other stores to Woolwich and the establishment broken up..."
I don't know if the above helps but it does explain a connection between the 2 places at that particular point in history.

Was David Bagley Colby married before he married Sally?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

DENNIS, Betty Jane
1923 - 2011
Betty Jane Dennis was born on April 16, 1923 in Hood, CA, and died with family at her side on May 30, 2011, at the age of 88. Raised by the Sacramento River with her identical twin sister Peggy and her brother Warren, she later moved into Sacramento where she spent the rest of her life surrounded by the people she loved. As a young woman, Betty joined the Army Corps of Engineers; a job that took her to the island of Guam during World War II where she had many adventures that flavored her life story. Upon returning to Sacramento, she met and married her first husband, Sy Dennis Jr., with whom she had two sons and a daughter. Betty devoted her life to raising her children, and she was very proud of each of them. Later in life she married Kenneth Haines, an artist, and they lived happily together until his death in May of 1987. With the appearance of grandchildren, all knew her as Grandma Betty. She will be remembered fondly for her speed at adding up the total of everyone's di!
ce in the game of Yahtzee, her winning luck at bingo, and her devotion to baseball, particularly the San Francisco Giants. Betty loved all animals but particularly cats. The word was out among cats in the neighborhood that they would always find a bowl overflowing with food at her house.
Betty Dennis is survived by son Steve Dennis; daughter Judy Dennis; and son Jon Dennis, as well as her grandchildren Joel and Mitchell Reber, Aaron Dennis, and Jenna Dennis. She dearly loved all her in-laws; Sheldon Reber, Rene Dennis, and Julie Dennis.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Rexford Colby; brother, Warren Colby; and sister, Peggy Winkleman, and her husbands, Sy Dennis Jr. and Kenneth Haines.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Betty's life on Sunday, June 12, 2011 at 12:00 Noon at the pool house at 557 Leeward Way, Sacramento, CA. Interment will follow on June 18, 2011 in Nolan County, Texas.
