To the List --
Many thanks to all those who responded to this query. With your invaluable assistance, I have now been able to complete this family group. Per the NEHGS data base, the missing children are:
Cora B. COLBY, born 29 Jun 1862 in Dover, Strafford, New Hampshire; died 27 Jul 1864 in Lawrence, Essex, Massachusetts
Infant girl COLBY, born and died 24 Feb 1878 in Lawrence, Essex, Massachusetts
George Moses COLBY was the older brother of my great grandfather, and if anyone is interested, I do have a bit more information on him and his descendants.
Thank you again for all your help.

Subject: Children of George Moses COLBY (1841-1910) & Henrietta Sophia HARRIS (1841-1912)
To the List --
George Moses COLBY married Henrietta Sophia HARRIS 26 May 1861 in Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts. They had six children, three of whom were deceased at the time of the 1900 census. Those who were still living in 1900 were:
Ida May (COLBY) BLACKWELL, born 19 Jul 1864 in Lawrence, Essex, Massachusetts
Herbert N. COLBY, born 3 Aug 1866 in Lawrence, Essex, Massachusetts
Fred W. COLBY, born 17 Nov 1868 in Dover, Strafford, New Hampshire
Fred's birth record indicates that he was the third child of this couple, so the three deceased children must all have been younger than he. However, I have only been able to identify one of the three:
Archer Benton COLBY, born 6 Mar 1874 in Methuen, Essex, Massachusetts; died 21 Oct 1877 in Lawrence, Essex, Massachusetts
I do not have access to the NEHGS data base, but I have scoured the online Massachusetts and New Hampshire VR collections at Ancestry and FamilySearch without any success; I even looked at the VR collections for Maine, on the off chance that there might be something there. With the exception of five years or so in Strafford County, New Hampshire (about 1867-1872), the family lived in Methuen and Lawrence, so it is unlikely that these children were born and died elsewhere.
Can any of you amazingly knowledgeable researchers help me locate these two missing children, who would have been born and died sometime between 1869 and 1900?
Thanks,
Guy I. Colby IV

Hi Folks: I have been trying to help Guy Colby and those lost children and I asked a friend who lives up in New England area for help and she sent this along with quite a few other items. Now what are the odds of this: In 1632 The Colby's arrived at Mass. colony and also in 1632 Dr. Briscoe and his wife arrived with Lord Calvert to establish Maryland colony at St. Mary's Maryland. My Colby's and thru my father side of the family and my mother side was the Briscoe's

Gordon --
You may well be correct, especially if they were stillborn or lived only a short time. Nonetheless, we are talking here about relatively recent times (last 30 years of the 19th century), and a geographical location (New England) in which detailed and meticulous vital records were routinely kept. In my research among late 19th century New England VRs, I have seen deaths recorded for children who lived for only a few hours. Moreover, this family were city dwellers, not rural folk, which reduces the likelihood that these children would have been buried in out of the way private plots. I'm just hoping that someone can suggest to me sources which I may have overlooked, or have access to some record which is not available to me.
Regards,
Guy

Guy: You may be over looking one factor which could be involved. Children
who died at a early age were often buried and their deaths not recorded etc.
My family bible going back to 1741 is studded with examples of this and with
the sole except of one I have never found their burials and/or records of
same. I think many were buried without much fanfair and not in cemeteries,
it stands to reason because death in those times was quite common and at
early ages.
