no need, guy.
just like the census--- depending on who was giving the info... or if
it was a guesstimate.
give or take a year lol
to my dismay my mother is actually a year older on her death
certificate than her real age due to my good math, which i only
realized too late and, not having descendants... didn't change .

Guy,
I went to NEHGS, now AmericanAncestors.org and found one record for
George Moses Colby:

Refine Search
Massachusetts: Grand Lodge of Masons Membership Cards, 1733-1990.
Residence: Laurence [sic]
Occupation: Undertaker
Nativity: Haverhill 1841-10-26

Passed: 1891-5-8
Raised: 1891-6-12

This certainly corroborates his birthdate.

Florantha GEORGE. Several reliable websites (including Alice
Volkert's and Ron Colby's) give his birth as 26 Oct 1841 in Haverhill,
Essex, Massachusetts, but I can find no documentation for this precise
date. The birth records of his children do agree that George's
birthplace was Haverhill (his death record says East Haverhill), and
his headstone in Bellevue Cemetery in Lawrence confirms his birth year
as 1841.
I do not have access to the NEHGS 1841-1910 VRs, but I do not find
George's birth in the FamilySearch databases (Massachusetts Births,
1841-1915; Massachusetts Births and Christenings, 1639-1915). I have
also scoured the listings for Haverhill and nearby towns on John
Slaughter's Massachusetts VRs website without success; unfortunately,
his new "Family List" search capability is not yet available.
Can any of you highly knowledgeable and wonderfully helpful folks
point me to a source for George's exact birthdate?
Many thanks,

I am trying to document the exact birthdate of my gg uncle George Moses COLBY, eldest child of Wiliiam Wallace COLBY and Elizabeth Ann Florantha GEORGE. Several reliable websites (including Alice Volkert's and Ron Colby's) give his birth as 26 Oct 1841 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts, but I can find no documentation for this precise date. The birth records of his children do agree that George's birthplace was Haverhill (his death record says East Haverhill), and his headstone in Bellevue Cemetery in Lawrence confirms his birth year as 1841.

Del,
Tried to contact you back in 5 April via the email address you provided but never heard back. Our email address is unique and oftentimes results in our emails getting kicked into the spam bucket. Here's what I said:
Hi there, Del. Thanks for responding to my Ancestry.com post. Not sure what you mean by "how do you come down." lol My sister and I began working on our family tree in sporadic spurts back in 2001 but haven't done any real work on it for several years. I was raised in New England but have not lived there since June of 1990. My sister still lives there and has done the lion's share of the leg work in terms of obtaining records. She knew of Lovina and had attempted to obtain birth records on her from Ohio with no success.
After stumbling upon a post by our cousin-in-law, Nyla Graham, she was able to reconnect with Nyla after many years of separation. Nyla shared with us what she had learned from you about the Colbys. I am just curious about source documentation and such as I'm in the process of building my family tree online with Ancestry.
I recently contacted the Cemetery Division of Public Works in Raymond, NH and was able to obtain photos of both Lovina and Martin's headstones. I'm sure you already have these, as well as marriage record for Fred & Lovina, but if not, I'd be happy to share with you.
Regards,
Deb Mills
Would still like to touch base with you....

Oh, yeah. Those Colbys knew how to get things done in those days! Interesting that they saw fit to identify the deceased as "wealthy intermarried citizens."
