Ernest (Ernie) Colby (1929 - 2011) |
HENNIKER - Ernest "Ernie" Colby passed away peacefully Friday, March 4, 2011, at the Bedford Hills Nursing Home, with his family by his side, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.
Born Jan. 5, 1929, in Henniker, Ernest was the eldest son of Roy and E. Inez (Griffin) Colby. He lived his entire life in Henniker with his wife of 64 years, Marion (Ryley) Colby.
Ernie was the one with a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eyes and a fun-loving sense of humor. With six children to provide for, a "Brady Bunch" of three sons and three daughters, he had several career paths, including working for the late Merle Patenaude of Henniker, the Monadnock Paper Mill, New Hampshire Ball Bearing and his favorite: the New Hampshire Army National Guard.
First Sergeant Colby served his country for almost 30 years in the U.S. Army. He was a World War II veteran and he was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal Japan. Highlights of 1SG Colby's military career include being the First Sergeant for the 744th Transportation Company, Hillsboro, and serving on active duty as the Training Sergeant for the 210th Engineer Company in Peterborough.
Ernie was especially proud of his shooting skills and was commended as a marksmanship shooter. He was a member of the NHARNG state rifle team. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and had many memorable adventures. He looked forward to the annual Colby family outings where he would play volleyball and shoot clay pigeons with family and friends.
Ernie was predeceased by his parents, Roy and E. Inez Colby; his brother Lewellyn "Tum" Colby; his recently departed sister, Irene Snair; his other sister, Arlene Sweatt; and brothers, Frank, George and Leon Sweatt.
Ernest is survived by his wife, Marion Colby; and brother, Raymond and his wife, Jean Colby, of Penacook. Ernest was proud of his children and leaves behind three sons and their wives, Wayne and Maria Colby, Melvin and Jean Colby and Larry and Nanette Colby; and three daughters and their husbands, Nyla and George Hiltz, Debbie Walsh and partner, Jeff Chandler, and Lynn and Stan Arthur. He leaves behind his 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; as well as his many adored and loved nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, March 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Congregational Parish Hall, Maple Street, Henniker.
With a passion for his military service, he will be honored Friday, March 11 at 11:30 a.m. at the Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association , 5 Bedford Farms Drive, Suite 201, Bedford, 03110-6524; or to the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery Association, dedicated to the Army monument, P.O. Box 626, Concord, 03302-0626.

I was able to search some of the Broward County official records regarding Margaret Colby and her estate based on the date of death. This isn't the correct person. Her married name was actually Colby and not her maiden name. I'll have to keep looking.
The only other possibility I have right now is to try and obtain her mother's death certificate and see if one of her children was an informant. I'm fairly sure it's going to be her husband though as he didn't die until 1964. The only problem is that I don't know if she actually died in Ann Arbor. Washtenaw County has a death index online from 1960 to almost current, but Louise isn't listed on there. That leads me to believe that she passed away sometime between 1955 and 1959. Louise was still living when her sister Nellie died in 1954. Hopefully, I can find something out.

Yeah, I saw that already. It would help if Florida had a more detailed death index online like Michigan, Alabama and North Carolina. I'll have to obtain the death certificate and see if that's the correct person so long as there isn't any restrictions. I'm still thinking though that she eventually got married.
There is another Margaret Colby also born around 1908 who lived in Cadillac, Michigan and went to Michigan State University. She is different from the one I'm looking for.

Message Board Post:
I'm trying to find out any information on a Margaret Colby who was born in 1908...possibly in either Ingham, Calhoun or Kalamazoo County in Michigan. She was a daughter of Louise I. Devall and George Grover Colby. The family was living in Battle Creek around 1910 an then Lansing by 1920 and from there to Jackson by 1930. Margaret was still shown as being single on the 1930 U.S. Census but she could have married soon after. Unfortunately, if she did marry, I have no idea as to who. Therefore, the maiden name is all I currently have. Her mother divorced George Colby around 1915 and later married Alfred Joseph LaCombe. She married a fourth time in 1939 to Benjamin Levi Webb and lived in Ann Arbor until her death sometime after 1955. I'm sure that Margaret would have been moved out from her family by then. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :0)
