Irene (Clark) Snair
February 23, 2011
HENNIKER,NH - Irene Colby (Clark) Snair passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at the Hillsboro House Nursing Home, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Irene was born March 21, 1937, in Henniker, the daughter of Roy J. and E. "Inez" (Griffin) Colby. She grew up in Henniker and lived there her entire life with exception to her stay at the Hillsboro House Nursing Home, where she received incredible care. Irene graduated from Henniker High School in 1955, Concord Hospital School of Nursing in 1958 and Northeastern University as an advanced registered nurse practitioner and went on to further her education at New England College, all while raising seven children. Irene married Graydon "Jerry" Clark in 1956 and later married Bruce Snair in 1966.
Irene was a healer and worked as a nurse at Concord Hospital, the Hillsboro House Nursing Home, Nathaniel Hawthorne College, The Feminist Health Center and Family Planning of NH. Irene's love of Henniker and New England College students led her into a 24-year career as a nurse, assistant director, nurse practitioner, and, finally, director of The Norman C. Parmenter Health Center at New England College.
Irene was instrumental in the fight for women's rights, the rights for safer contraceptives and was a pioneer in bringing the cervical cap to the U.S. She enjoyed Henniker, her family and NEC so much that other lucrative career offers were always turned down, so "she could be close to family and friends." Irene, known as "Renie" by her friends and family, was always there in times of need for others. Her house was often frequented by those in need of medical care or with other concerns. Most of all, "Grammy Rene" adored her grandchildren, as well as her nieces and nephews, some not legally related, but that never mattered.
Irene was predeceased by her parents, Roy and E. Inez Colby and by her "other mother," Dorothy McGregor (Clark) Bergh, the best mother-in-law anyone could ask for; her husband, Bruce Snair; and brothers, Frank, George and Leon Sweatt and Llewellyn "Tum" Colby; as well as her sister, Arlene (Sweatt) Daniels; and sister-in-law, Ruth (Huntley) Colby.
Irene is survived by her brothers, Ernest and his wife, Marion Colby, of Henniker and Raymond and his wife, Jean Colby, of Penacook; her daughter, Victoria Coffey; sons Robert Snair and his wife, Kelly, of Washington, Gary Snair of Hillsboro and Dick Snair of Concord; and her grandchildren, Bryan and Stephen Coffey, Bobby, Kassidy and Kaelyn Snair, Alexandra Murayda, and Mia and Ryan Sturtevant. She also leaves behind her stepchildren, Mary Miller, Pamela Walsh and her husband, Daniel, and Kimberly Rose; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours for Irene will be held Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Henniker.
Plans of a celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to one's choice of the many local charities.

Marilyn --
Yep, he was the younger brother of my 3ggf, Ebenezer COLBY -- thanks for the obit. I was intrigued by the statement in the obit which indicated that Richard was the next to youngest child of the 12 children of Colman COLBY and Phebe GARLAND. I know of only 11: Dorothy (1787), Ebenezer (1789), Colman (1791), Thomas (1793), Rachel (1795), Judith (1797), Timothy (1800), Phebe (1802), Abraham (1805), Richard (1812), and Lorenzo (1816). Does anyone know who the twelfth child was? Unless he or she was a twin who died young, this child would have to fit into the seven year space between Abraham and Richard.

Subject: [COLBY] Charged with Horse Stealing.
Batavia, New York
October 22-1888
Charged with Horse Stealing.
There is discord in the family of Hiram COLE, who resides about three
miles
West of Corfu, and on account of it Hiram languishes in jail here. The
family consists of Hiram, his wife, and his wife's mother, Mrs.
Catherine
COLBY. Hiram was a bachelor until about a year since, when he met Mrs.
COLBY's daughter Celia, who is many years his junior, and took upon
himself
the duties of a married man, and the care of a mother-in-law as well.
The
three have appeared to live together in harmony until a few days
since, when
Hiram took it into his head that he wanted to sell a horse to H.W.
BENNETT,
a resident of Corfu. Mrs. COLBY claimed that the horse was her
property and
she did not care to have it sold. Then the trouble began.
Hiram declared that it should be sold, and at his request BENNETT
drove to
his house yesterday afternoon and secured the horse, which was
delivered to
him by Hiram.
Mrs. COLBY immediately started out for Batavia, where she secured
warrants
for the arrest of her son-in-law and BENNETT on a charge of horse
stealing.
The warrants were placed in the hands of Sheriff REEDY last evening
and he
drove to Corfu to serve them. He arrested Hiram about 1 o'clock this
morning
at his house, but he did not find BENNETT, who was not at home.
Mr. BENNETT arrived in Batavia at 1:50 o'clock this afternoon, and after
retaining W.E. WEBSTER as his lawyer visited Justice J.B. CROSBY's
court,
where, it is expected, some disposition will be made of the case this
afternoon. District Attorney WOOD appears for the people
