Mary was a faithful and long-time member of the Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Waterford and Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid River. Her hobbies included updating and caring for the family home, and keeping up with all the news surrounding the lives of her children and their families. She too was an avid reader who enjoyed gardening.

Mary Haggan Colby was born in Belfast and came to Chicago with her parents as a young girl. She was my grandfather James Haggan's older sister. I know she worked for the telephone company in Chicago as an instructor at one point. I don't know how she met William Colby. After they were married they lived with her parents for a short time and at one point they lived in Missouri. My uncle told me that the women of the congregation in Rumson contacted her sisters to tell them that Colby was cheating on Mary. She died shortly after that. I'd appreciate any information about William Colby in Chicago.

MELVIN AMBROSE COLBY
Einan's Funeral Home
Melvin Ambrose Colby, 81, passed away peacefully on December 23rd at Calloway Gardens in Kennewick, Washington. Mel left a legacy of love and an enduring model of humility, kindness and the value of the simple things in life.
Mel was born on an icy night in Plummer, Idaho, 8 April 1928. He was the fourth of six children born to Miles and Altha Colby. During WWII, Mel worked three summers with the Forest Service. Mel graduated from Harrison High School in 1945. When he turned 18, Mel joined the U.S. Navy for a 2-year hitch. In 1948, an amazing love story began that would span over 60 years.
Mel married Velda Stephens on May 14, 1949, in Richland, WA. Mel and Velda lived in Couer D'Alene through the winter of 1949 and then moved to Grandview, followed by a move to the Tri-Cities in 1950. The Colby household was an active one with four children Randy, Sandie, and twins Mike and Steve. Square dancing was a favorite shared hobby for Mel and Velda, and they bought and managed the Hoe-Down Center for a number of years. They loved fishing, swimming, camping, and traveling in their motor home to Arizona, Nashville and Mel's beloved northern Idaho.
Mel worked as contract administrator for J.A. Jones at Hanford except for three years in Michigan, where he worked on the Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant as a superintendent for J.A. Jones from 1969 to 1972. The family returned to the Tri-Cities, where Mel finished his working years until retiring in 1990. After retirement, Mel enjoyed playing guitar, writing and recording country music.
Throughout the years, Mel and Velda's love for one another was deep and affectionate. Nothing could break or weaken their love, not even the cruelty of Alzheimer's disease, which struck them both and marked another path they took together.
Mel and Velda indeed shared happiness in life, through sickness and in health, and because of the hope we have through the saving grace of Jesus Christ, the celebration has really just begun.
Mel was preceded in death by his father, Miles; mother, Altha; sister, Melba; brothers, Roy and Lyle. He leaves behind his wife, Velda; son, Randy Colby; daughter, Sandie King (Joe); Mike Colby (Joan); Steve Colby, grandchildren, Rick, Matthew and David Colby, Sherrie Martinez; and four great-grandchildren; sisters Monie (Tim) Fish and Donnie Svoboda.
The family is grateful for the loving and caring staff at Callaway Gardens and Hospice.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate Mel's life at 1:00 on Saturday, January 2nd, at Memories at Sunset Event Center located on the beautiful grounds at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland, WA. Please join us immediately after the service for a reception also at Memories at Sunset Event Center.
The family invites you to express your thoughts and memories in the online guestbook at www.einansfuneralhome.com.

VELDA MARIE COLBY
Einan's Funeral Home
Velda Marie Stephens was born at her Grandma and Grandpa Stephen's farmhouse on September 7, 1932, near Jennings, Kansas. She was the second child of seven born to William and Wilhelmina Stephens. Velda went home to be with the Lord on November 23, 2011 at Calloway Gardens. She was constantly surrounded by her family the last week of her life as the final opportunities to show love and care were known to be coming soon. Those days were precious and the regular visits will be greatly missed by her children and family.
Velda's early years in Kansas were memorable ones full of adventures. When Velda was eight, the family moved to Colorado and later when Velda was in the sixth grade, the family moved to Oregon for a short time. In 1945, the family settled in Washington. When she was almost 17, Velda married the love of her life, Mel Colby in Richland, WA. Together Mel and Velda raised a family of four Randy, Sandie, and twins Mike and Steve. They lived most of their married years in the Tri-Cities except for three memorable years in Michigan and some early years in Grandview and Coeur d'Alene. Velda experienced an array of adventures being the busy mom of four young kids.
In 1997, Mel and Velda wrote, 'It seems like there was a crisis of some kind most every day around our house but we're living proof that you can survive.' Survive they did, and they had a lot of fun along the way. Together they raised a loving family who remains close to this day. In retirement years, Velda and Mel had many memorable times in their motor home. The family treasures all the great family get-togethers that Mel and Velda hosted at their house. Simple times that were simply fun!
Mel and Velda loved each other in sickness and in health, and shared the path of Alzheimer's together. They came together to Calloway in October 2007 until Mel passed away on December 23, 2009. In the two years after Mel's passing, Velda continued to live at Calloway and she continued to brighten our lives. Velda loved to sing You Are My Sunshine with daughter Sandie and even though she couldn't always sing the words, it brought her much enjoyment 'in the moment'.
A special thank you to those at Calloway who extended warmth and care to the family.
Velda enjoyed gardening, badminton, fishing, camping, square dancing and she was a formidable opponent in double-hand solitaire. Her chocolate cream pie was amazing! She was rarely without her beautiful smile and brightened up our day with her laugh and smiles.
Velda was preceded in death by her husband Melvin; father William; mother Wilhelmina; and two infant sisters. Velda leaves behind a loving family: son Randy Colby; daughter Sandie King (Joe); son Mike Colby (Joan); son Steve Colby (Twila); grandson Rick Colby (Jenny and great-grandchildren Marcus and Samantha); granddaughter Sherrie Martinez (Augie and great-grandchildren Steven and Audrey); grandson Justin Colby (Shanlenn and great-grandson Alden) and grandsons Matthew and David Colby; brothers Murl and Leland Stephens; sisters Rusta Watt and Mary Fowler.
There will be a memorial service to celebrate Velda's life on Sunday, December 4, at 2:30 p.m. at the Einan's Event Center in Richland, WA.
Express your thoughts and memories on our online Guestbook at www.einansfuneralhome.com.
