MONONA PIONEER DEAD
H. E. Colby Has Resided Near Onawa Since 1855
Onawa, Ia., Jan. 27.--The death of Mr. H. E. Colby, sr., a highly esteemed citizen on Onawa, which occurred on Saturday evening, removes one of Monona county's pioneers. For nearly fifty years Mr. Colby had been a citizen of Monona county, having settled there with his wife as early as the spring of 1855, coming from the town of St. Charles, Kane county, Ill.
Mr. Colby was a native of New York and was born in 1822. In early life he engaged in the mercantile business in that state, and followed that until locating in this county. Mrs. Colby died a number of years ago. Three children yet survive, Mrs. Stephen Myers and Frank E. and Harry E. Colby.
Mr. Colby during his life filled various public offices in Monona county, and for several terms was elected a member of the board of supervisors, in which capacity he proved one of the best and most efficient in the attention given to county affairs. At one time he devoted himself to farming and lived in Franklin township, but in later years moved to Onawa, where for a time he and his son Frank were engaged in business. Mr. Colby retired from active affairs about ten years ago, since which time he has led a quiet life. He was a man possessed of splendid qualities as a citizen, hospitable, straightforward in manner, and always above reproach. He was ill but a few days, having contracted a severe cold, followed by weakness of the heart, from which he failed to rally, owing to his advanced age. Funeral services were held at the late family residence and the remains interred in the private plot in the Onawa cemetery this afternoon.

May Colby's sister was always called Addie by the family, but I assume her name was Adelaide? She was born in 1859 in Corinth, VT. Her first husband was a Prescot (don't know his first name). They had a son, Frank. Addie lived with her parents (Cornelius O. Colby) in Corinth after she became a widow, then about 1883, she married Horace McDuffee in Manchester, NH. She died on 6 May 1929 in Manchester and is buried in the Hill Cemetery in Candia, NH. Addie and Horace had two sons, Orrin and Arthur. Arthur was my grandfather.

Thanks so much. Apparently I had been given a wrong first name. I wonder if she had any children. There is a very old family album with no names written in. My mother, who passed away 4 years ago at 94, thought one of them was of May. Guess I'll never know for sure. If she did have descendants, they might be able to verify the picture.

You have children Phyllis and Elizabeth as born the same date in 2 different
places!! Twins are not born in 2 different places. Also, the 1930 census
has Phyllis as 7 and Elizabeth as 4 1/12. So I think Elizabeth's birth
date is off a bit.
What happened to Lulu and the other kids?? Ruth & Pauline should have been
in the 1920 census - unless they died young??

Looking for information on Mary Colby, daughter of Cornelius O. Colby (b. Corinth, VT 1834...he was a musician in the Civil War). Her sister, Addie Colby, was my gg grandmother. Did Mary ever marry and have a family?

This is my great grandfather's sister, but there was an e-mail some time ago that indicated she was adopted into the family, having been born Marietta Carey or some such name, and changing to Colby through the probate court. I'd love to know more about her! I do have some of her diaries and albums from South Africa, also her autograph book from Kimball Union Academy. Thanks for the obituary! Eleanor Colby Zue, Vershire, VT
The Marietta Colby in the DAR database is different:
*Colby*, Marietta
Born: 22 - Feb - 1851
Died: 19 - Dec - 1926
Not this person.
And, there are 2 "Ira Colby" in the DAR descendants lists. One is the
grandson of this mystery Ira Colby - but that line is through the Fosters -
his grandmother's family. The other Ira Colby is my ancestor and that is
completely different - not this group.
