Infant christened in 167 year-old gown
By Eileen M. Daly
Lily Marie Phillips was christened on Oct. 19, 2008 wearing a gown that was
first worn by an infant in 1841.
Phillips is the step-granddaughter of local resident Wendy Harvey, who wore
the gown at her own christening ceremony many years ago. Harvey's
great-greatgrandfather, Clarkson Dearborn was the first child to be
christened in the gown, followed by her great-grandmother, Emily Dearborn,
her grandmother, Constance Warren-Armbrust, her mother Linda Armbrust-Warner
and then by Harvey herself. Harvey's sister Melissa Warner-Burrows and her
niece Jessica Burrows also wore the gown, but Harvey's brother, Christopher
Warner, and her nephew, Andrew Burrows, were unable to wear the gown because
it was too small. In fact, according to Harvey, they were lucky the gown fit
Phillips. "She's gotten a little bigger, so we were hoping it would still
fit. We were putting her little arms in the dress and hoping it would fit
around them. We just about squeezed her into it," said Harvey.
The dress is made of cotton and nothing special has been done to preserve
it, Harvey said. "We just make sure it is clean, wrap it in tissue and place
it in a box until the next christening. It is really in remarkably good
shape considering how old it is and how many children have worn it," she
said.
Phillips wore the dress with a bonnet that was made by Harvey's paternal
grandmother, Harriet Warner, for Harvey's own christening ceremony. The
bonnet has a satin lining and has also been worn by a succession of family
members. The bonnet was made through a process called tatting. It is a
process that dates back to the early 19th century. Tatting is a lace-making
technique that produces a particularly durable lace. "It is not quite like
knitting or crocheting because there are no needles used," Harvey said. "A
shuttle is used instead, but not a large shuttle like those used in weaving
looms. This shuttle is only about three inches long and is held by hand
rather than on a stand. Everything is done by hand with tatting. Also, yarn
isn't used in tatting. Instead, strong thread is used to create the lace,"
Harvey said.
"Tatting has almost become a lost art; not many people know how to do it
anymore," she said. Harvey's sister has possession of all of their
grandmother's tatting supplies, but neither sister has retained the art of
tatting, Harvey said. "My grandmother tried to teach me at one time, but I
was around 12 years old and she didn't really start at the basics. I
wouldn't recommend trying to learn this from a relative," she said. All hope
is not lost, however, as both Harvey and her sister are taking knitting
lessons from a man named John Gomes, who, coincidentally, is skilled in the
art of tatting.
According to Harvey, she and her sister haven't entirely given up on
learning the complicated process. "John has worked a lot with weaving and
looms and he does know how to do tatting. You never know, we may learn how
to do tatting, yet," Harvey said.
(Ron's note: Emily Dearborn in article is d/o Clarkson Dearborn and Mary A
Osgood. Mary is d/o Morrill Osgood and Susan A Colby.)

Would that be likely? She would have been born in 1783 to have died at 80
in 1863. The only child I know of for Phillip & Betty is Hannah born in
1761. 22 years is a BIG gap! You sure???

Some interesting info sent to me.
Found while researching the files of the Franconia Heritage Museum:
At a Franconia Town Meeting Feb. 6, 1837, a Vigilance Committee was
appointed to discourage proponents of abolition of slavery. Agitation
on both sides of the issue had led to violence, and the Board of
Selectmen wanted to " put a stop to agitating the subject in our town
and for this purpose recommend to all to abstain from meeting with
the abolitionists to discuss the subject of slavery."
The first resolution read: Resolved, that we disapprove of agitating
the subject of slavery in the now slaveholding states as having a
tendency to excite the passion, breed ill will in
neighborhoods--break up all society and scatter the seeds of disunion
and rebellion in our happy country.
Resolution 2nd That we will use our utmost exertions to put a stop
to agitating the subject in our town and for this purpose recommend to
all to abstain from meeting with the abolitionists to disuses the
subject of slavery.
Dr. John Calvin Colby, then a practicing physician in Franconia, was
one of 18 men appointed. He is the only one who declined to serve.

Ron and all,
One of my granddaughters asked me yesterday the origin of the Colby surname.
I never really looked into in detail since there seems to be so much speculation on all surnames and their origins.
Anyway I did a quick Google search and found these entries.
Anyone else have something different?
Surname: COLBY
"Colby" surname origin England name
This interesting surname is locational from "Colby", a place in Norfolk and Westmorland, and "Coleby" in Lincolnshire, so called from the Old Norse personal name, "Koli", a by-name for a person of swarthy appearance, from "kol" (char) coal, and the Old Norse "byr", settlement. Colby in Norfolk was recorded as "Colebei" (Domesday Book 1086) in Linconshire)
COLBY
Gender: Masculine
Usage: English
Pronounced: KOL-bee [key]
>From a surname, originally from various English place names, derived from the Old Norse nickname Koli (meaning "coal, dark") and býr "town"
Colby is a place name deriving from the parish of Coleby, which lies seventeen miles northwest of Semperingham, and six miles south of Lincoln. There is also a parish of Colby in Norfolk, next to Beccles, and it too seems to have been the source of a quite unrelated Colby clan. There are also villages called Colby in Westmoreland, in Yorkshire, and one in Denmark.
The name is of Viking origin and means coal place. There are a number of places in England containing Cole, such as Coleridge, Colclough, and Colebrook. The by- suffix is the Viking word meaning homestead or farm. Thus, Coleby was probably a farmstead where charcoal was made in ancient times by Viking settlers.

This Day in History
On August 19
1692 Five women and a clergyman were executed after being convicted of witchcraft in Salem, MA.
Reminds me that Susanna Martin - Colby family connections, was executed one month previous.
On Tuesday, July 19, 1692 Susanna Martin, Sarah Good, Rebecca Nurse,
Sarah Wilde, and Elizabeth Howe were taken from their cells, put into a
cart and driven up the rocky road to Gallows Hill. While Rebecca Nurse
prayed, Rev. Nicholas Noyes exhorted Sarah Good to confess saying, "You
are a witch, and you know you are a witch." She replied, calling him a
liar and saying that she was no more a witch than he was a wizard
and...if you take away my life, God will give you blood to drink."
Tradition says that Rev. Noyes died of an internal hemorrhage, bleeding
profusely from the mouth.

Ron and all,
I found references to a "Justice J.A. Jack Colby and his family in
Charleston, Coles County, Illinois in 1917. Any information on this family?
I found: Sarah E. Ashby born in 1861 married J.A. Colby. Maybe she was his
wife?
Apparently Jack Colby's wife and children were killed in a 1917 tornado.
A little ironic that today is Tuesday here in Illinois and the tornado
sirens are sounding off on their weekly test at 10:00 a.m as I am typing
this.
I found Mary Colby in the Illinois Death Index. Maybe she was one of the
Colby children killed in the tornado. COLBY MARY F/W UNK 0004857 1917-05-26

May 26, 1917
A major tornadic thunderstorm took a 293 mile track across central parts of
Illinois and Indiana. Once believed to be a single tornado, later study
indicated it was likely at least 8 separate tornadoes. The first touchdown
was about 20 miles southeast of Quincy. The tornadic storm tracked due east,
before beginning a northeast curve near Charleston; separate tornadic storms
then curved southeast from Charleston. The towns of Mattoon and Charleston
bore the brunt of the tornado. Damage from this severe tornado in Mattoon
was about 2.5 blocks wide and 2.5 miles long, with over 700 houses
destroyed, while the Charleston portion was 600 yards wide and 1.5 miles
long, with 220 homes damaged. Damage in the two towns amounted to about $2
million, in 1917 dollars. 53 people were killed in Mattoon, and 38 were

Subject: [COLBY] Justice J.A. Jack Colby - Charleston IL 1917 - Who is he?

53 people were killed in Mattoon, and 38 were
killed in Charleston. Overall, 101 people in Illinois were killed during the
tornado outbreak, with 638 injured..
