Amanda Chaffee (the daughter) was born in Wales MA and died in Vernon Ct. in 1832.
I have no other info on Amanda colby other than the info that she was the mother of Amanda Chaffee and obviously lived or was from Mass. Porter was born in Monson, MA and died in Ellington Ct. I do know that Porter was a blacksmith and/or carriage maker if that helps. Porter Walbridge and Amanda Chaffee had the following children Eunice b. 1817, Moulton b. 1815, Wing b. 1819, Sandford b. 1821, King b 1823, Austin 1825, Adeline b 1826 and Porter Jr. b. 1827.
I need to work backwards from Amanda to connect her into my Chaffee Tree. Thank you so much for your help.

The records of ships used to carry troops to their theaters of
operations were destroyed intentionally in 1951. "According to our [U.
S. National Archives] records, in 1951 the Department of the Army
destroyed all passenger lists, manifests, logs of vessels, and troop
movement files of United States Army Transports for World War II."
(Sorry, but there was no word on why the records were destroyed.) Thus
there is no longer an official record of who sailed on what ship,
though there are still valuable sources that can be found. So this web
page is an informal collecting ground for information about troop ship
crossings.

The Brazil, from which diptheria anti-toxin was transferred to the troopship Colby Victory at sea last week, arrived at Pier 54, North River from Le Havre, Cobh and Southampton with 531 passengers. It was the last crossing before reconversion from a wartime transport to a regular passenger and cargo vessel.
Brazil's transfer of the diphteria anti-toxin to the Colby Victory was carried out after she had intercepted a 9:30 a.m. radio message from the troopship, which was carrying 1,009 replacement troops from New York to Bremerhaven. One of the troops had died from what was described as laryngeal diphtheria in a preliminary diagnosis and the anti-toxin was requested to prevent further cases of the disease. Brazil's course was altered to bring her alongside the Colby Victory 500 miles off Argentia, Newfoundland.
It was discovered later that the death was caused by pneumonia and that there had been no diphtheria cases on the ship.

I had a young lady send me 21 pictures taken by her father of the troops
boarding the Colby Victory Ship and arrival in New York in fall of 1946. I
have permission to put them on my site.
A couple of years ago we discussed this ship on the Colby list but not much
info was given. What info do you have on the Colby Victory Ship.
Information is scarce on the internet.
Thanking you in advance

Patricia Kay Hanks
Born in Salem, OR. on Oct. 28, 1943
Died on Jul. 4, 2009 and resided in McMinnville, OR.
Service: Saturday, Jul. 11, 2009
Cemetery: Belle Passe
She leaves her loving husband of 46 years and best buddy, Al Hanks, children David and Lisa and grandchildren Diego, Thibaud and Guillaume. Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 1:00 pm at Chapel of Macy and Son.
Born in Salem, on October 28, 1943, Patricia was raised in Gervais by her parents Izorah "Kay" and Roscoe Colby, and was one of five sisters.
While attending Gervais High School, she was a cheerleader and championship softball pitcher. As a teen, she loved to wear pleated miniskirts and dance the night away. Music was a life-long passion, particularly jazz and rock and roll. Patricia always had a piano in the house and played beautifully.
"She was the prettiest girl I ever saw," Al remembers of their first meeting at the University of Oregon, where they were both undergraduates. A devoted, lifelong Ducks fan, she cheered on her football team during every game, dressed head to toe in yellow and green.
Patricia went on to earn a Fine Arts degree from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, in 1979, as well as a Master's in Museum Studies from California State University, Long Beach, in 1990. As an artist, she created oil, tole and watercolor paintings, as well as prints and jewelry.
Patricia enjoyed cross-country skiing, mountain biking, golfing, camping, hiking and flyfishing. She sought out new places to sightsee, walk, shop, ski, drink wine and eat cheese, and travelled extensively in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
She also enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening and indulging her sweet tooth; Godiva chocolates and Tillamook berry shakes were special favorites. She volunteered in many places, including the Master Gardener program, Air Force Family Services and various museums.
Patricia was a devoted, loyal, loving wife, mother and homemaker, though she didn't particularly like housework. She was fiercely protective of her children, and dearly loved her grandsons. The hole in our hearts will never be healed. She will be sorely missed.
Memorials may be given to Huningtons Corea c/o Macy and Son.

Aline Cecil Tapscott Minnich
5/16/15 ~ 1/20/04
Aline was born in Hart, Michigan in 1915, one of a pair of twins, daughter of Leslie V. Colby, father, and Cecil G. (Hasty) Colby, mother. The family moved to Gervais, Oregon in the early 1920's.
In 1934 she was married to Bangs C. Tapscott. They moved to Riverside, California, where they had one son, Bangs L. Tapscott. They were divorced in 1948.
Aline later moved to Lancaster, California, where she met her second husband-to-be, Joseph Minnich. They were married in 1959, and moved to Susanville, California, where they bought a ranch and raised sheep. Joe died of a heart attack in 1979.
Eventually, Aline moved to Woodburn, Oregon, just a few miles from Gervais where she grew up. She lived there until 2001, when she moved to Salt Lake City to be near her son and daughter-in-law.
She died the evening of January 20, 2004, after a short hospital stay. She was 88 years old.
Aline had a remarkable memory for friends and acquaintances, and maintained correspondence with many she hadn't seen for years. She remembered birthdays and anniversaries of all of her friends and relatives, and always sent cards and gifts. She treasured many little gifts she had received over the years, and liked to tell who had given them to her and when. She had a soft heart for animals, and especially loved wild birds. In Woodburn, and again in Salt Lake City, she maintained bird feeders and bird houses, and enjoyed watching the sparrows and others raise their families. A year or so before moving to Utah, she was adopted by a young homeless cat, whom she named Lucky . He stayed her faithful companion for the rest of her life. Aline remained independent, living in her own apartment in a retirement community, right up until her final hospital stay.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joe, her twin sister Eileen Seely, her younger brother Roscoe Colby, her younger sister Flora Carmical, and her dear friend Pearl Vogt.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Bangs and Fran Tapscott, grandson Chris Tapscott and wife Julie, granddaughter Teresa Tapscott, great-granddaughter Ryley Tapscott, and her uncle Carroll Hasty in Michigan, plus many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Aline requested cremation, and that request has been observed. There will be no formal funeral ceremonies. A small private memorial gathering will take place at a later time. Those wishing to honor her memory may do so by making a donation to the Audubon Society, or other organization devoted to birds or animals.

Ron and all,
I found references to a "Justice J.A. Jack Colby and his family in
Charleston, Coles County, Illinois in 1917. Any information on this family?
I found: Sarah E. Ashby born in 1861 married J.A. Colby. Maybe she was his
wife?
Apparently Jack Colby's wife and children were killed in a 1917 tornado.
A little ironic that today is Tuesday here in Illinois and the tornado
sirens are sounding off on their weekly test at 10:00 a.m as I am typing
this.
I found Mary Colby in the Illinois Death Index. Maybe she was one of the
Colby children killed in the tornado. COLBY MARY F/W UNK 0004857 1917-05-26
COLES CHARLESTON 17-05-28
May 26, 1917
A major tornadic thunderstorm took a 293 mile track across central parts of
Illinois and Indiana. Once believed to be a single tornado, later study
indicated it was likely at least 8 separate tornadoes. The first touchdown
was about 20 miles southeast of Quincy. The tornadic storm tracked due east,
before beginning a northeast curve near Charleston; separate tornadic storms
then curved southeast from Charleston. The towns of Mattoon and Charleston
bore the brunt of the tornado. Damage from this severe tornado in Mattoon
was about 2.5 blocks wide and 2.5 miles long, with over 700 houses
destroyed, while the Charleston portion was 600 yards wide and 1.5 miles
long, with 220 homes damaged. Damage in the two towns amounted to about $2
million, in 1917 dollars. 53 people were killed in Mattoon, and 38 were
killed in Charleston. Overall, 101 people in Illinois were killed during the
tornado outbreak, with 638 injured..

Ron and all,
I found references to a "Justice J.A. Jack Colby and his family in Charleston, Coles County, Illinois in 1917. Any information on this family?
I found: Sarah E. Ashby born in 1861 married J.A. Colby. Maybe she was his wife?
Apparently Jack Colby's wife and children were killed in a 1917 tornado.
A little ironic that today is Tuesday here in Illinois and the tornado sirens are sounding off on their weekly test at 10:00 a.m as I am typing this.
I found Mary Colby in the Illinois Death Index. Maybe she was one of the Colby children killed in the tornado. COLBY MARY F/W UNK 0004857 1917-05-26 COLES CHARLESTON 17-05-28

A major tornadic thunderstorm took a 293 mile track across central parts of Illinois and Indiana. Once believed to be a single tornado, later study indicated it was likely at least 8 separate tornadoes. The first touchdown was about 20 miles southeast of Quincy. The tornadic storm tracked due east, before beginning a northeast curve near Charleston; separate tornadic storms then curved southeast from Charleston. The towns of Mattoon and Charleston bore the brunt of the tornado. Damage from this severe tornado in Mattoon was about 2.5 blocks wide and 2.5 miles long, with over 700 houses destroyed, while the Charleston portion was 600 yards wide and 1.5 miles long, with 220 homes damaged. Damage in the two towns amounted to about $2 million, in 1917 dollars. 53 people were killed in Mattoon, and 38 were killed in Charleston. Overall, 101 people in Illinois were killed during the tornado outbreak, with 638 injured..

50 KILLED, 115 HURT AT CHARLESTON
http://www.gendisasters.com/data1/il/tornadoes/charleston-tornado1917.htm
Terre Haute, Ind., May 27.--Information received here early Sunday morning through indirect wires to Charleston are to the effect that fifty were killed and 115 or more injured in a tornado which struck that city late Saturday afternoon. Physicians from this place were rushed to Charleston to render assistance.
Wires in all directions out of Charleston are down and information is meager. The bridge between Mattoon and Charleston was blown down, cutting off all rail connections between these cities.
