HENRY HERRICK COLBY
(15 Apr 1845 - 22 Dec 1926)
Henry Herrick Colby, son of Jonathan and Lydia Colby, was born in 1845, about four miles northwest of the church. His father was a native of New Hampshire, and his mother of Connecticut.
Mr. Colby was married to Mary Ellen Bone, daughter of Robert and Nancy Bone, in 1869. To them were born three children, only one of whom, Mrs. Nellie Cherry, wife of Rev. John T. Cherry, is now living.
A man of industrious habits and excellent business qualifications, Mr. Colby has been rewarded by success in his vocation, that of farming. Of a retentive memory, his fund of useful information on many subjects has been a store house from which he could draw when occasion demanded.
He is quick of decision, and his opinions are valued by his neighbors. He is an interested student of State and National affairs, and seldom fails to express his sentiments at the polls.
A regular attendant at Sabbath School and church, and well versed in the Scriptures, for many years he has been teacher of the Men's Bible Class.

Mary Ellen Colby
(Mrs. Henry H. Colby)
MARY ELLEN BONE COLBY
(14 Mar 1848 - 30 May 1915), wife of Henry H. Colby and daughter of Robert S. and Nancy Bone, was born March 14, 1848, almost within the shadow of the church she so loved, and in the work of which she was so deeply interested, being a devoted, consecrated Superintendent of the Primary Department of the Sabbath School forty-five years. Many of the older people in the present congregation, and most of the younger ones, received their earliest Sabbath School instruction from her. She was progressive and made use of the best methods in teaching and holding the attention of her pupils.
No child ever had a more loving friend or a more earnest teacher; nothing seemed too much trouble for her to do for the enjoyment or benefit of the children, and to the last days of her life she was planning for her class.
Sympathetic by nature, her heart went out to any one in need of help, and many can testify that her hand obeyed the impulse of her heart in rendering prompt and substantial assistance. She was a great lover of flowers and her gifts of blossoms and plants brought cheer to many a sick room.
Four little orphans were taken into her home and cared for as tenderly as her own children. Two of these died in infancy; of the other two one is now a trained nurse, and one a young farmer.
She lived to serve; and in service to others she found her greatest happiness.

Marilyn,
I knew it was a hoax when you sent it.
These e-mail scams, are not only annoying, but they are worse when they take up space on genealogy e-mail lists.
There are a number of websites that will debunk most of these e-mails.
http://www.hoax-slayer.com/area-code-809-scam.htmlhttp://www.hoaxbusters.org/http://www.snopes.com/http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/arch...
It only takes a little reason and, common sense and a simple search of Google. Just enter a few words you see in the e-mail subject and add these words: "hoax scam email." You will be rewarded with results showing that a particular e-mail is nothing more than a scam.
The worst for computer users though is that some of those e-mails that prey upon uninformed users or rely on a persons view that the world is a rosey place will sometimes contain a virus or worm if there is an attachment included.

Looking to connect with anyone of relation to the Colby families of Hambden, Geauga County, Ohio or vicinity. The family I am referring to migrated out of Vermont to New York, then settled in Hambden Township Ohio (although I believe Thomas may have ended up in Waiverly, Bremer County, Iowa).
I am most interested in connecting with descendants of the following family members:
* Caleb Colby b. abt. 1777 in New Hampshire d. aft. 1850 in Ohio(?)
(unknown wife)
* Thomas L Colby (son of Caleb) born about 1808 in Vermont
Eliza Ann Gordon (wife) born about 1813 in New York d. 1856 in Orange, Cuyahoga County, Ohio
Children of Thomas and Eliza Ann Gordon:
* Emily Colby b. abt 1831 in Ripley, Chautauqua, New York
Thomas Chase (husband)
* George Colby b. abt 1833 in New York (I believe he served in the Ohio 41st Volunteer Infantry during the civl war)
* Amelia Ann Colby (my ggg grandmother) b. 28 Nov 1935 in Ripley, Chautauqua, New York d. 16 Mar 1930 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA aged 94 years
Daniel H. Worthington (husband) b. 1833 in Leroy, Geauga, Ohio d. 8 Feb 1863 in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee after the Civil War Battle of Stones River from complications of a gunshot wound to the knee (Ohio 41st Infantry)
* Henry Colby b. abt. 1837 in New York
* Albert C Colby b. May 1842 in Ohio d. 12 Mar 1927 in , Lake, Ohio
Maria J Booth (wife) b. abt 11 Mar 1848 in Hambden, Geauga, Ohio d. 11 Feb 1882 in Hambden, Geauga, Ohio
Olive L Booth (second wife) b. 11 Jun 1845 in Hambden, Geauga, Ohio d. 15 Mar 1919 in Hambden, Geauga, Ohio
* Alonzo Colby b. 1844 in Hambden, Ohio d. 30 Nov 1872 in Ohio (Ohio 41st Infantry)
Sarah E Stafford (wife)
* John Colby b. 1848 in Ohio, USA
I suspect Thomas had 2 brothers and a sister..
Again, I would love to hear from anyone related to this family!
Happy hunting!

>So, Colby Smith must be somehow connected to me? My ggg grandfather was
Calvin Colby, who lived in Corinth, VT. Was this one of his brothers? A
cousin perhaps? His father was Joseph Colby, and I have him listed as
married to Rhoda Barrett. There must be a lot of "family" still in this
area. I live maybe 20 or so miles from Corinth in Hartford, VT.
Actually, if any of the Colby clan is going to the family reunion in
August, I'd love to carpool. Surely! Smith is the child of Joseph Colby

Regarding Colby Camps. My Grandfather used to take me to the Rockford IL area in the Mid 1950s for the annual Family Picnic. There were hundreds of Colby's there in the summertime. Maybe that is what is meant by the word "camp"?

Gordon,
Smith Colby's obituary said he was born in Erie Co., New York, in 1828. He
is lived in Sardinia, Erie, NY in the 1850 census (with a Flavel and Lydia
Osburn, his wife Amanda and son, Edwin). In the 1855 New York State
Census he lived in Franklinville, Cattaraungus, New York, with his first wife
Amanda, and children, Edwin, Marvin, Fanny and Duane.
As to the SHOCKEY question. All people with the surname SHOCKEY are related
to each other. It was not a surname until our original ancestor immigrated
to the USA in 1737 and his surname of SCHACKE was "Americanized" to
SHOCKEY. He was the only known Schacke who had his name Americanized to SHOCKEY.
So if your last name is Shockey you are related to all other Shockey's in
the USA. I've been married to "two" different Stephen Shockey's and have
traced both of them back to the original immigrant ancestor, John Christopher
Shockey (AKA Johann Christoffel Schacke, who settled in Bucks Co.,
Pennsylvania after entering America through Philadelphia, PA). The Shockey family
settled in Pennsylvania before moving into Maryland and other surrounding
states in the 1700's and 1800's, now of course they are in all states.
Nancy: Two questions for you. Could your Colby line have come from
Pennsylvania ? Is your husband relatedto the Shockey's of Franklin Co.,
Pa.
?
