Now I see where the Jackman name came in.
This is a film from a streetcar on Market St. in 1906 San Francisco before the earthquake. No traffic rules, no paved roads, no traffic lights or pedestrian crosswalks. A lot slower pace than it is now, so it worked.

I am not a fan of the Sierra Club, but there was a prominent Colby living in San Francisco at the time of the quake:
William
Edward Colby was born in Benicia, California, in 1875. His mother,
Caroline Amelia (Smith) Colby, had been a teacher in the Young Ladies
Seminary, and his father, Gilbert Winslow Colby, was a `49er, merchant,
state assemblyman and state senator. After attending public schools in
Benicia and Berkeley, Colby was graduated from the Hastings College of
Law in 1898. He began his practice in San Francisco and soon
specialized in mining law. From 1911 to 1937 he taught mining and water
law at the University of California. He wrote numerous articles on the
subject, compiling a valuable library as well.
Colby joined the Sierra Club in 1898, the year of
his graduation from law school. He served as the club's
representative in the Yosemite
Valley area. In 1900, he became the club's secretary, and
served (bar two years) in that post until 1946. He also served as a
director of the club for 49 years
Have a Happy New Year!

*CHARLTON* — A local man was killed last night when he was struck by a car
as he attempted to cross the westbound lanes of Route 20 on foot near
Northside Road about 7:15 p.m.
Police said a second car may have grazed Chan W. Colby, 44, of Northside
Road, Charlton, after he was hit by an Infiniti I35 in the left lane of the
highway.
Mr. Colby was likely walking home when he was hit, police said. The poorly
lighted stretch has a 50 mph speed limit and no sidewalks. Police said he
was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sgt. Graham S. Maxfield said a preliminary investigation has ruled out speed
as a factor, and police will await the results of an autopsy before
completing their investigation.
The Infiniti, driven by 38-year-old Daniel Muroki of Worcester, had damage
to the front end. Police said a second driver’s car may have grazed Mr.
Colby while he was in the roadway. State police accident reconstruction team
members were investigating last night. Both drivers stopped and were very
shaken up, police said. Neither was injured.
“It’s tragic,” Sgt. Maxfield said. “It appears to be a tragic accident.”
The accident closed the westbound side of the roadway for about 2-1/2 hours.
Police said they do not know where Mr. Colby was coming from or if he
regularly walked on the highway. They believe he had crossed the two
eastbound lanes of traffic.
Sgt. Maxfield said Route 20 is a dangerous stretch of road and that there
have been several fatal accidents in the towns along the highway, including
Charlton, though he cannot remember any recent pedestrian accidents.
Mr. Colby is the son of the late M. Wayne Colby Jr., who was a Charlton
selectman when he died in 1997.
