Probably one of the largest DNA projects is the Sorsenson database
http://smgf.org and it's FREE. They do both the male and female lines.

Gordon,
You can use this link see what might be available. Just do a search on the
name Colby.
http://www.familytreedna.com/name_search.aspx
Also, a search at www.ysearch.org might give you some leads. And you can
search the name at http://smgf.org. There seems to have only been a limited
amount of DNA research done on Colby families to date.

Yeah, my message to Tristan also bounced. His most recent posting to the Colby list was in August 2005, so he may no longer use the AOL address. Perhaps someone on the list knows how to reach him. How about it, Ron -- do you have a current e-mail address for Tristan?

Gordon --
Since your query is potentially of general interest, I am taking the liberty of posting my reply to the list.
Yes, I believe there is a Colby DNA project. A launch announcement was posted to the Colby Rootsweb board in February 2007, but I do not know the current project status. I have not participated, since my line (like that of most American Colbys) is well documented back to the immigrant ancestor, Anthony Colby (bapt. 8 Sep 1605 in Horbling, Lincolnshire, England). Anthony was the only immigrant with the Colby surname to come to America during the colonial period. However, if there is a chance that DNA sampling could tie the Lincolnshire Colbys to other Colby branches in the UK, I would be happy to take part.
The expert on UK Colby genealogy is Tristan Colby Salazar. Tristan has identified half a dozen or so different UK Colby lines, including one in Wales and one in Ireland, and he is writing a book about them. He is of the opinion that Anthony's Lincolnshire line (which was in that area as early as 1421) is connected to the Norfolk/Suffolk line, though I don't know that he has been able to prove the connection. John Brooks Threlfall, the distinguished American genealogist, regards them as unrelated. I am also copying Tristan on this message; perhaps he can tell you more about his UK Colby research.
