Hi, Bob,
Thanks for the census info. By the way, you are descended from the Levi Colby whom my aunt Louise Colby, 1900-1989 of Claremont and I found interesting in connection with the possible source of our Colby lineage. He lived in Henniker and was about the right age to be the father of my great great grandfather, the Ira Colby born in 1803 in Henniker to Nancy Fellows. I hope you'll forgive me if I wonder aloud about some one I know nothing about, who happens to be your 6th generation Colby forebear. I believe in the Weiss genealogy book it appeard that he had had children by his wife every other year for a number of years, and then the last one was in about 1800. I think his wife might have been about 40 in 1803. My great great great grandmother, Nancy Fellows, was, I believe, 18 in 1803. What if she were a nanny at their house or a tutor, as actually she has a genealogy that goes back a number of generations to Ipswich, I think. Anyway, maybe something happened!
and your ancestor got my ancestor pregnant..... I don't know how likely it would have been to name one's out of wedlock child with the last name of the father, and of course maybe there was an unmarried father who just never married Nancy. Maybe he died at sea or something. It would be wonderful to know, but we probably never will.
Hope this doesn't sound too unfair or unflattering to Levi. I'd appreciate any thoughts you might have on this. Eleanor Colby Zue
Hi, Bob and Ron,
These are my forbears, the last listed being my grandfather, Ira Gordon Colby of Claremont (died June, 1965, I think) My father was Ira Gordon Colby, Jr., who died 7/3/00. I've just been reading letters my grandfather wrote to his mother, Louisa Way Colby, while he was at BU Law School in Boston in 1894-96. Lineage, however, is another thing, as Ron points out. No father listed and Nancy Fellows is buried in the family plot in Claremont, but evidently never married the father, who remains unknown, but called the son Ira Colby. We have speculated about Colby men in Henniker at the time....married, it seems. Would it make sense for one of my male Colby relatives (brother or nephew) to have a DNA test? That would perhaps establish something, but I don't know what and know nothing much about it.
I came to a Colby Clan gathering in E. Orange, VT a few years ago and certainly would love to solve this mystery if it is solvable.

Marilyn --
Charles A. COLBY served as captain of Company D (Cook County) of the 19th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which mustered in on 17 June 1861. This regiment did contain three Chicago "Zouave" companies (A, C, and K), some of whose members had also been part of Ellsworth's "Cadet Zouave Militia" precision drill group prior to the war. Ellsworth himself, of course, left Chicago as soon as the war broke out and returned to his native New York, where he organized the 11th New York Infantry Regiment (the "Fire Zouaves"), with himself as Colonel. The 11th New York, which was composed of members of the Manhattan volunteer fire department, was promptly deployed to defend Washington (Ellsworth was a personal friend of Pres. Lincoln), and on 24 May they crossed the Potomac to participate in a raid on Alexandria, Virginia. Ellsworth was killed during the raid, perhaps the first Union officer to die in the Civil War.
Charles A. COLBY resigned his commission 9 Feb 1863 (Andreas says 7 Feb), a month after the 19th Illinois suffered more than 100 casualties during the fiercely fought battle of Stone River. I do not know whether anyone has proven conclusively that this Charles A. COLBY is the same person as the Charles COLBY (son of Abraham COLBY, grandson of Hubbard COLBY) who was born abt 1832 in Eaton, Strafford, New Hampshire. If so, he would be my 2nd cousin, four times removed. I have not read the Tribune articles, but Andreas does not give any detail about him, The original Civil War muster roll should give his place of birth, but unfortunately, the muster roll data base on the Illinois State Archives website does not include all of the data contained in the original muster rolls.
The town of Eaton, population 417 (2005), was chartered in 1760 and incorporated in 1766. At the time, it was a part of Strafford County, one of the original five counties of New Hampshire. Carroll County was created from Strafford County in 1840, and the town of Madison was split off from Eaton in 1852.
It is important for researchers to understand the special meaning of the term "town" in New England. New England towns were (and are) somewhat analogous to the civil townships of the Midwest, in that they are geographical subdivisions of a county. Unlike townships, however, they are organized administrative units, with all the functions and prerogatives of municipalities. A New England town may include subordinate units, usually called "villages" or "boroughs" (the town of Eaton, for instance, includes the village of Snowville).
In urbanized areas of New England, towns have generally morphed into "cities," though the distinction remains blurred in many places. In rural areas, such as the town of Eaton, the vicinity of greatest population concentration is often called the "town center." Eaton Center, therefore, is not technically a "town" -- it is just the "center" of the town of Eaton.
Since New England towns do not meet the commonly employed definition of the term (i.e., a compact populated place), the USPS and the Census Bureau do not always treat them consistently. The town of Eaton, for instance, is recognized by the Census Bureau as a Minor Civil Division (MCD) rather than a Census Designated Place (CDP), and Eaton Center is not recognized at all. In contrast, the USPS has assigned a ZIP code to Eaton Center (which is why it appears on maps), but none to Eaton (which is not, strictly speaking, a "place").
A very useful article on the subject of New England towns appears at:

Ron,
What is his lineage?
Colby, Hon. Ira
The following data is extracted from Merrimack and Sullivan Counties, New Hampshire Biographies.
Hon. Ira Colby, one of the leading lawyers of the State of New Hampshire, was born in Claremont, N.H., January 11, 1831, son of Ira and Polly (Foster) Colby, both of purely English descent. Their families in the various branches number many persons of distinction. On the maternal side he is descended from Reginald Foster, who came from Exeter, Devonshire, England, and settled in Ipswich, Essex County, Mass., in 1638. It has been stated in an account of the descendants of Joseph Stickney, which appeared in the New Hampshire Granite Monthly of July, 1892, that the family of this Reginald is honorably mentioned in "The Lay of the Last Minstrel" and "Marmion." When Mrs. Colby was eleven years of age, her father removed with his family from Essex, Mass., to Henniker, N.H., to prevent his sons from becoming seafaring men. She there met Mr. Colby, a native of the place. They were married April 17, 1827, and immediately removed to Claremont, where they ever afterward lived. Mr.
Colby was one of the most successful and enterprising farmers of his town, and was honored with many positions of trust. He served as a Selectman in the years 1858 and 1859 and as a Representative of the town in the legislature of New Hampshire in 1872 and 1873. He died in 1873, at the age of seventy years.
The subject of this sketch lived at his father's, and worked upon the farm on "Bible Hill," so called, until seventeen years of age, his only schooling up to that time having been obtained at the district schools. He then entered Marlow Academy, and, while there, decided to obtain a college education. Finishing his preparatory course of study at Thetford, Vt., he entered Dartmouth College in 1853, and was graduated four years later. During the winter seasons, while at the academy and college, he was engaged in teaching, first in New Hampshire and afterward in Massachusetts. The year after graduation was spent in teaching at Waukesha, Wis. In September, 1858, he began the study of law in the office of Messrs. Freeman & McClure in Claremont. Two years later he was admitted, upon examination, to the Sullivan County bar. For the past thirty-five years he has been engaged in the practice of his profession in the office where he obtained his first knowledge of law.
In giving the particulars of his public career we quote from a contemporaneous history: "He was always a Republican in politics, and in the time of the Rebellion was an active and zealous supporter of the cause of the Union. He was a Representative in the legislatures of 1864, 1865, 1881, 1883, and 1887, a member of the State Senate during the years 1869 and 1870, and of the Republican National Convention in 1876. With the exception of two years he was County Solicitor the entire time from 1864 to 1888. In 1889 he was appointed by the governor and New Hampshire. On the resignation of Judge Allen in March, 1893, he was appointed an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, but declined the appointment. He was for ten years a member of the Committee of the Stevens High School, and has been for many years one of the Trustees of the Fiske Free Library. He has always taken a leading part in public affairs, and has been an active promoter of the public welfare. In his profession he
has been a hard worker and close student, and ranks among the best lawyers in the State. He has an extensive and lucrative practice, and for many years has been engaged on one side or the other of all the important causes in his county. As an advocate at the bar and a debater upon the floor of the House of Representatives or the Senate he ranks among the very best."
He married, June 20, 1867, Miss Louisa M. Way, daughter of Gordon Way, Esq., of Claremont, and sister of Dr. O. B. Way, of that place. Their only child, Ira Gordon Colby, is a graduate of Dartmouth College of the class of 1894, and also a graduate of the Boston University Law School, class of 1897. In religion Mr. Colby is a Methodist, as was his father before him. For many years the father was one of the Board of Trustees of his church; and the son, upon his death, succeeded to, and still holds, the same office.

Ron --
I think your hypothesis is probably correct -- as you well know, my own 2nd great grandfather, William Wallace COLBY (John's younger brother), was another family member who made the move from Eaton down to the Haverhill/Methuen/Lawrence area. Further evidence can be found in the 1840 census for Eaton, where the household of John COLBY includes 1 male age 20-29 (John), 2 males under age 5 (presumably Eben R. & John L. Jr.), 1 female age 30-39 (presumably Caroline), and 1 female age 70-79. Caroline may well have shaved a few years off her age in subsequent censuses. The older woman may be Caroline's mother.
If I ever get to make my long delayed research trip to New Hampshire, I will see if I can track down a will for Ebenezer COLBY -- it might possibly provide conclusive proof of this identification.

I have the FTM 1850 census disc's for New Hampshire, they have John Colby
correctly indexed. That is how I found John to start with in Kingston. I
had to start thumbing through the pages one at a time until I found him on
Ancestry.
all the death records for the children list their mother as Caroline M.
Richardson.
I think it is too much of a coincidence that a lot this Colby line went from
Eaton/Madison to Lowell, MA and Haverhill, MA that John L. Colby is not some
how connected and probably the son of Ebenezer and Dorothy.

OK, I see the 1850 census entries now -- they eluded me before because the
entire family was indexed under the surname "John" (rather than "Colby"). I
thought I had checked for all possible indexing errors, but I never thought
that they might have used John's given name as his surname! I suppose I
should have simply browsed through the Kingston pages until I found them!
Unfortunately, I don't have access to the NEHGS data. If John's birthplace
was Eaton, then there is a good probability that he was indeed the son of
Ebenezer COLBY and Dorothy JACKSON. I guess it would take some research in
New Hampshire records to pin this down for sure. Does anybody have a will
transcription for Ebenezer?

An intriguing hypothesis -- his name, birth state, and birth year (per the
1860 census) would fit, but I know of no proof that this John L. COLBY is
actually the same person as John COLBY, eldest son of Ebenezer COLBY and
Dorothy JACKSON.
I am sure that other, more experienced list members have researched
Ebenezer
COLBY and his nine children more thoroughly than I have, but I do have a
few
comments and questions about the data presented in your family group
sheet:
1) What is your source for identifying Madison, Carroll, New Hampshire as
the birthplace of this John L. COLBY? If he was in fact born there, it
would significantly increase the likelihood that he was the son of
Ebenezer
COLBY and Dorothy JACKSON. Incidentally, the correct place name
identification for this time frame (abt 1813) would be Eaton, Strafford,
New
Hampshire. Carroll County was not created from Stafford County until
1840,
and the town of Madison was not split off from Eaton until 1852.
2) What is your source for the maiden name of Caroline M., wife of John L.
COLBY? Also, what is your source for her birth year (1814)? On the 1860
census (taken 9 Jun), she is 47, and on the 1870 census (taken 29 Jul),
she
is 58. On the 1880 census (taken 7 Jun), she is 65. It is interesting to
note that the 1870 census shows her birthplace (and that of all other
family
members) as Massachusetts rather than New Hampshire.
3) Nonetheless, the 1870 census is a real treasure trove of information on
this family. In 1870, Caroline's household includes her sons Daniel and
George, her daughter Mary, and Mary's husband, William H. HODGDON. Next
door to Caroline on one side is her son John L. COLBY [Jr.] and his wife
Annie. Next door to Caroline on the other side is her deceased husband's
1st cousin, Lorenzo D. COLBY, and his wife Hannah. Next door to Lorenzo
is
the household of Caroline's son Eben, his wife (also a Caroline), and
their
children, Hortence and Herbert (Eben himself is actually enumerated in the
household of his brother, John L. COLBY Jr.). All of the males work for
the
shoe factory except Mary's husband, who is a sailor. There is also an
elderly couple, George and Louisa GARLAND, living with Eben's family. I
have not checked it out, but my guess is that this couple bears some
relationship to Phebe GARLAND, the first wife of Coleman COLBY (and mother
of Ebenezer COLBY).
4) The 1880 census entry for Caroline and her daughter Mary is a little
puzzling. Caroline has only aged seven years since 1870, and Mary has
only
aged six years. Mary is recorded as being single and disabled, and there
is
no sign of her husband.
5) You place this family in Kingston, Rockingham, New hampshire on the
1850
census. However, I cannot find them listed there in 1850 (or anywhere
else,
for that matter).
I checked to see what Alice Volkert has on this John L. COLBY in her
WorldConnect GEDCOM. She has him as the son of Coleman COLBY by his
second
wife, Abigail BARROWS (which would make him the half brother of Ebenezer
COLBY). However, so far as I know, Coleman COLBY did not have any
children
by his second wife. Alice, can you give us some sources?

Ron --
OK, I see the 1850 census entries now -- they eluded me before because the entire family was indexed under the surname "John" (rather than "Colby"). I thought I had checked for all possible indexing errors, but I never thought that they might have used John's given name as his surname! I suppose I should have simply browsed through the Kingston pages until I found them!
Unfortunately, I don't have access to the NEHGS data. If John's birthplace was Eaton, then there is a good probability that he was indeed the son of Ebenezer COLBY and Dorothy JACKSON. I guess it would take some research in New Hampshire records to pin this down for sure. Does anybody have a will transcription for Ebenezer?

An intriguing hypothesis -- his name, birth state, and birth year (per the
1860 census) would fit, but I know of no proof that this John L. COLBY is
actually the same person as John COLBY, eldest son of Ebenezer COLBY and
Dorothy JACKSON.
I am sure that other, more experienced list members have researched Ebenezer
COLBY and his nine children more thoroughly than I have, but I do have a few
comments and questions about the data presented in your family group sheet:
1) What is your source for identifying Madison, Carroll, New Hampshire as
the birthplace of this John L. COLBY? If he was in fact born there, it
would significantly increase the likelihood that he was the son of Ebenezer
COLBY and Dorothy JACKSON. Incidentally, the correct place name
identification for this time frame (abt 1813) would be Eaton, Strafford, New
Hampshire. Carroll County was not created from Stafford County until 1840,
and the town of Madison was not split off from Eaton until 1852.
2) What is your source for the maiden name of Caroline M., wife of John L.
COLBY? Also, what is your source for her birth year (1814)? On the 1860
census (taken 9 Jun), she is 47, and on the 1870 census (taken 29 Jul), she
is 58. On the 1880 census (taken 7 Jun), she is 65. It is interesting to
note that the 1870 census shows her birthplace (and that of all other family
members) as Massachusetts rather than New Hampshire.
Next door to Lorenzo is
the household of Caroline's son Eben, his wife (also a Caroline), and their
children, Hortence and Herbert (Eben himself is actually enumerated in the
household of his brother, John L. COLBY Jr.). All of the males work for the
shoe factory except Mary's husband, who is a sailor. There is also an
elderly couple, George and Louisa GARLAND, living with Eben's family. I
have not checked it out, but my guess is that this couple bears some
relationship to Phebe GARLAND, the first wife of Coleman COLBY (and mother
of Ebenezer COLBY).
4) The 1880 census entry for Caroline and her daughter Mary is a little
puzzling. Caroline has only aged seven years since 1870, and Mary has only
aged six years. Mary is recorded as being single and disabled, and there is
no sign of her husband.
5) You place this family in Kingston, Rockingham, New hampshire on the 1850
census. However, I cannot find them listed there in 1850 (or anywhere else,
for that matter).
I checked to see what Alice Volkert has on this John L. COLBY in her
WorldConnect GEDCOM. She has him as the son of Coleman COLBY by his second
wife, Abigail BARROWS (which would make him the half brother of Ebenezer
COLBY). However, so far as I know, Coleman COLBY did not have any children
by his second wife. Alice, can you give us some sources?

A Letter Home
The letter arrived about midmorning. By noon, thanks to motherly Mrs. Florence Ethel Colby, 60, who minded the village switchboard in the parlor of her white frame house, everyone in Geetingsville, Ind. (pop. 27) knew what the letter said: "Dear Mom and Dad: This is awful hard to tell. My chaplain told me to write and tell you that I am charged with murder and have been sentenced to be shot. Get an attorney and try to have this sentence reduced." It was signed: "Bob."
>From the nine farm houses of Geetingsville the story hummed out into the Indiana farmlands. Soil-grimed men muttered to themselves: "It can't be so." Not the Bobby Colby they had known: he had gone to church regularly, did his farm chores all rightexcept that he would not even kill the chicken for Sunday dinner. The Rev. Lenn L. Latham said: "Some people say they think that psychologically the Army made a killer out of him."
Around the 110-year-old Presbyterian church, Bobby's 60-year-old father, Lance, tended the town's graveyard. Now & then he paused to look at a sign which read: Commit thy way unto the Lord. To friends he said: "If he did it, he was drove to it."
At the Colby home, Bobby's mother tidied up her son's room, which was still the way he had left itpin-up girls and airplane pictures on the wall, a radio and Popular Science on the table, his civilian clothes hanging in the closet. He had been in the North African campaign, then in the Normandy invasion, the Battle of the Bulge, and is now in Germany.
Exactly what had happened, no one in Geetingsville knew. Both the War Department in Washington and ETO headquarters in Frankfurt refused to divulge the facts of Bobby's crime.
So the staunch, God-fearing people of the countryside wrote a letter to Harry Truman. Then they turned elsewhere. A hundred of them trooped into the church, prayed for Bobby Colby and spoke the 40th Psalm in unison: "For innumerable evils have compassed me about. . . . They are more than the hairs of my head. . . . O Lord, make haste to help. . . "

TIME
Monday Sept 17 1945.
For eleven days the hamlet of Geetingsville, Ind. had offered prayers
for
Pfc. Robert A. Colby, sentenced to death in Germany after an Army court
martial (TIME, Sept. 10).
Last week Geetingsville heard what Bobby Colby had done. At Eisleben he
had
gone AWOL to find a drink, had been given four days' extra labor as
punishment. That night he had taken a rifle, shot and killed his
company
commander and a passing lieutenant.

"Arland" is what I understand it to be. But I don't have any documentation on that. Since he died in 1987, he must have gotten off, somehow.

Ohhhh... That must have been something! Those poor parents! I assume he got off, somehow, since his death date is 15 Mar 1987. Do you have any more to the story??? I read the 5 articles - and, like most newspapers, there is no closure!!!
My father was at Normandy, too. He would not talk about it. He was not Eisenhower's biggest fan.

TIME
Monday Sept 17 1945.
For eleven days the hamlet of Geetingsville, Ind. had offered prayers for
Pfc. Robert A. Colby, sentenced to death in Germany after an Army court
martial (TIME, Sept. 10).
Last week Geetingsville heard what Bobby Colby had done. At Eisleben he had
gone AWOL to find a drink, had been given four days' extra labor as
punishment. That night he had taken a rifle, shot and killed his company
commander and a passing lieutenant.

I found 5 articles in the The Vidette Messenger (Valparaiso, Indiana) on

The last article was dated Sep 19 1945 and it said that Sen Willis was
appealing to President Truman.

This reminds me of a mail offer I received before we had internet. It was
for THE WORLD BOOK OF COLBYS. Trying to learn more about my family I ordered
it. Several of my relatives were listed, even my wife. I wasn't listed even
though the offer was sent to me.
