wow! Interesting puzzle here!
He married Mary Adeline Durrill and they had 5 children and she died. Then he married Mary L and / or Rosa M.
Mary L in the 1880 and 1900 census and Rosa M. on the pension record
If Rosa M. were his last wife (widow) then they had to marry after the 1900 census! Your Alpha would have been pretty old!!
Do you think, Mary L - the last name starts with an L and she is really Rose Mary L......... ?

Ron, According to the GENEALOGY OF DESCENDANTS OF JOHN CLOUGH OF SALISBURY,
MA by The John Clough Genealogical Society, Inc. he is the same John Colby
listed in Hoyt, Vol II page 685.
If both the Clough source and Hoyt are correct; This would make him the son
of Thomas Colby and Ruth---- of Amesbury, MA, Newton, NH
