I am a descendant of Joseph Colby and Adelia Belding, who lived in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas, Colorado, Missouri and Iowa in the mid-late 1800's. Their children included Dora, Cora, Elroy, Sarah, Sylvia, Jennie, Henry, Inez, Orient and Iva Mae. I have quite a few unidentified old photos which I believe are of members of this family. Photo studios listed in Leadville CO, Mankato-Burr Oak KS, Des Moines Iowa, Minneapolis KS, and Chicago IL. If anyone can help identify these photos, I will gladly email copies. Hello all! I just got some really good news which would be very helpful to launching our COLBY group successfully.
It's a limited time offer from FTDNA for Colby males who used Relative Genetics, DNAHertigage, Oxford Ancestors or Genebase.
You folks may receive conversion testing by FTDNA at a below cost rate for the 12,25 or 37-marker test. This is great for the Colby project and for your pocket book! Conversion retesting would assure the consistent integrity of the results for our project.
There is a PDF form that at this address: http://www.familytreedna.com/pdf/PROMO_GAP.pdf
The only catch is that the form needs to be completed by you, mailed and received by FTDNA before March 30, 2007.
Update on members: We have the 1st participant in our group!
Remember: you do not need to be part of the Colby group to make a connection with others who are being tested by FTDNA. By joining through the Colby group you are offered group rates and your results will be part of the Colby project that will help us all.
Have a great day! Susan

ANNOUNCING the new Y chromosome DNA group project for the COLBY family at Family Tree DNA!
To find the COLBY - WORLDWIDE group, go to http://www.familytreedna.com and search for "Colby".
For the surnames: CAULBY, COALBY, COLBE, COLBEY, COLBY, COLLBY and all variations
====== DNA IN GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH Have you ever wondered about testing your DNA? I did, but I needed to learn more. After days of research, my journey lead me to Family Tree DNA, "FTDNA". I found that FTDNA was America's 1st genealogy driven DNA testing service.
I married into the Colby family several years ago and have been enjoying genealogy for more than 25 years. I was impressed with what I found at FTDNA and created the family project group COLBY - WORLDWIDE. Please know that I will receive no financial gains from this effort, just the satisfaction and fun of learning more about our Colby ancestors.
I invite you to read a bit more and explore the benefits of DNA testing with Family Tree DNA. http://www.familytreedna.com When you are at the site, take a look at the FAQ page for answers to other common questions. To learn more about DNA testing, see below BRIEF OVERVIEW OF DNA. Among other features, with the DNA tests you will be able to indicate your ethnic and geographic origins including Native American, African or Jewish ancestry.
====== NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC GENOGRAPHIC PROJECT: Family Tree DNA provides the tests for the National Geographic Genographic Project. Read about this fascinating project at https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/index.html. After testing with FTDNA, you can upload your info to the Genographic project from the FTDNA site.
====== ADDED FREE BENEFITS Much has happened since Y-DNA testing first became available commercially through Family Tree DNA in February 2000. In order to allow people that tested with different companies to make their results available for comparison, FTDNA offers Ysearch http://www.ysearch.org as a free public service. Ysearch is the largest worldwide public Y-DNA base. FTDNA also offers http://www.MitoSearch.org, the first worldwide public database for those who have tested mtDNA with different companies.
====== TESTING is done with a scraper and a collection tube. In about five minutes, you will be able to read the instructions and perform a painless cheek scraping. The effect of using the scraper is about the same as brushing your cheek with a soft bristle toothbrush.
====== AFTER TESTING, your genetic information will be added to a secure confidential database. When you submit your genetic sample they compare your sample to that of others and will notify you if they find a genetic cousin already in the database. If a match occurs in the future, you will be informed of the relative's existence so that you can contact that person. It is important that you sign and return the release document to receive this benefit.
====== THE TESTS are Y-Chromosome DNA (only for males), Mitochondrial - mtDNA (for males or females) and Combined Y-Chromosome DNA & mtDNA (only for males).
====== PRICING There are different levels of testing, but tests start at the prices listed below. The differences in the tests are fully explained at the FTDNA web site. Please note that you will receive a GROUP DISCOUNT when purchasing through any group project offered through FTDNA, including Colby - Worldwide.
Y-DNA12 (males only): regular price $149, with group discount $99
mtDNA (males & females): regular price $129, group discount is same $129
Combined Y-DNA12 mtDNA: regular price $229, with group discount $199
====== CHOOSING FAMILY FOR TESTING: The following are personal examples of testing orders I placed for my family. Please keep in mind your opportunity for testing those family members who are the oldest or the last in a line.
Y-DNA: My personal example of Y-DNA testing is a male family member whose mother is still alive and has submitted her mtDNA test AND his father has since passed. He is the oldest male with the surname. His mother's test results will provide him with information regarding his maternal line.
mt-DNA: My personal example of mt-DNA testing is a female who is the oldest female in our family line.
Combined Y-DNA12 mtDNA: My personal example of a Combined Y-DNA12 mtDNA testing is a male whose father has passed, his mother has passed AND he is the last living child in his mother's line.
====== SPECIAL NOTE TO FEMALES regarding group projects for mtDNA: Y-DNA is not carried in females and as mtDNA is maternally inherited and is passed from female ancestors to their descendant of either sex (see below), the Colby - Worldwide group is only for men.
Possibly the most beneficial approach to finding a group would be to consider the geographic origin of your female line. My personal example: no information is known about my mom's grandmother except that she came from France in 1885. My mom's order for mtDNA was placed when joining the French Heritage group.
====== BRIEF OVERVIEW OF DNA: DNA is the carrier of our genetic information and is passed down from generation to generation. A person receives DNA from both their father and mother. We have 23 pairs of chromosomes. Of each pair, one comes from the father and one from the mother. The 23rd chromosome is known as the sex chromosome. The 23rd chromosome from the mother is always an X. From the father, a person either inherits an X chromosome or a Y chromosome.
The Y chromosome is only found in men. This makes a Y chromosome test an ideal choice in making a connection with those of the same surname. Therefore, only men can take the Y-DNA test and participate in the Colby Surname Project.
For females who are interested in the project, a close male relative would need to provide the sample. In choosing a male, consider an older relative who may be the last surviving male in your family line and have them tested.
====== TESTS FOR FEMALES: A person's maternal ancestry can be traced using his or her mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA. mtDNA is maternally inherited and is passed from a female ancestor to their descendant of either sex. By continuing a line from a mother back to her mother and so on, it's possible to trace a family tree backward in time based on mitochondrial lineages. This test also allows you to identify your ethnic and geographic origins, both recent and far distant, on your direct maternal line. This test is used for both females and males and is an important tool for genetic analysis and genealogical research. When choosing an mtDNA project, you may want to consider the geographic origin of your maternal line.

DAMARISCOTTA - Charles H. Colby Jr., 84, formerly of Westport Island, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007, at Winship Green Nursing Center in Bath.
He was born in Bath on April 22, 1922, a son of Charles H. and Vinetta Colby.
He attended Bath schools and graduated from Morse High School. He served in the Army. He married Alice Marie Robichaud in 1944. He was employed by the Department of Transportation in Edgecomb for 30 years as a truck driver, and later was a self-employed farmer selling produce.
He was very active in auto racing. He raced from 1970 to 1978 and continued to be active with his son and grandson racing. He loved hunting, farming and his daily visits to the Wiscasset Irving to meet his friends.
He was predeceased by his wife, Alice Colby, on June 9, 1989; and a daughter, Diane Rittle.
He is survived by a son, Charles H. Colby III and his wife, Debbie, of Newcastle; a daughter, Helen Langer of Arrowsic; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
At his request, there will be no services.
Arrangements are by Mayo & Daigle Funeral Home, 40 Federal St., Wiscasset.
This is NOT Earl Leslie Colby. This Earl's middle name is Le Roy. He
started in Wisconsin (I think!) son of Freeman Albert Colby & Mary I. (or
J.) David.
The thing I don't get is in the 1910 census his mother-in-law is Minnie
Bangerter and in 1920 his mother-in-law is Lavina G Colby.
So, maybe they meant step-mother???? But that doesn't make sense either
since his father died before his mother, so probably did not make another
marriage.
That part beats me! Any ideas??

Ron and Alice,
Please let me know if you have any additional information on this family.
Oliver Colby 10 Jun 1793 - 27 Oct 1850 is part of my family line. His father, Nicholas Colby 12 Jul 1754 - 30 Mar 1838 is the brother of my 4th great grandfather Levi Colby 8 Nov 1757 - 10 Nov 1827.
Here is a link to a Rootsweb entry that I posted in 2002 (and you replied Ron):

Here is another Rootsweb entry posted in 1998 by me regarding one of my Colby family history adventures in Illinois. It's surprising how all of that information remains on the internet!

My wife, Joan and I visited the BETHEL RIDGE CEMETERY, (Near Atwater), Shaws Point Township, Macoupin County, Illinois, May 8, 1998. I photographed the Oliver and Sophronia ("Howlet" -spelling on gravestone) Colby family headstone.
Here is a note that I entered in my genealogy database:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Friday May 8, 1998, Joan and I went to Carrollton, Illinois, the Greene County Historical Society Society. I found a 1860 Greene County Census listing the Crane family , headed by William Crane and his wife, "Mary J. ", (note the census taker recorded the name as Mary J., however, this had to be, Mercy J. (Crane), Colby, the daughter of Sophronia and Oliver Colby. Recorded as living with him and family was Sophronia, and two of her children, Joel and Sarah Colby.
Sophronia was listed as: "mother-in-law" , aged 59. Joel was listed as 20 years old, occupation/ Teacher. Sarah was listed as 17 years old and occupation: "Domestic."
So, apparently, sometime after the death of her husband Oliver Colby, in 1850, Sophronia moved in with her daughter, Mercy J. and her husband William Crane and family.

We visited the town of Carlinville, Illinois and the town square is preserved fairly well. It was like going back to a simpler time. Who would have thought then, how our world would change after 9/11.

Bob Colby
Sophronia Howlitt married 16 May 1820 Oliver Colby b. 10 Jun 1793
Oliver Colby died 27 Oct 1850.
Oliver Colby and children are listed in the 1850 census for Macoupin County,
Illinois
Sophronia and daughter Susan are not listed in the census
Where were they?
I haven't found Sophronia in any of the later census, did she re-marry, if
so to whom?
I have that Sophronia Howlitt d. 19 Aug 1888, I have also seen a death date
of 10 Nov 1880.
Both are said to be buried at Atwater, Illinois, again a question on this.
So the questions are:
What happened to Sophronia after Oliver's death.
Which dod is correct, 1880 or 1888?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
