Joe Colby Sr.
Joe Colby Sr., longtime Ponca City area resident, died Jan. 9, 2004, at the Fairfax Manor in Fairfax. He was 92.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. A vigil will be held 7 p.m. Sunday evening, Jan. 10, at Trout Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home.
On Jan. 3 of the year 1912, Dr. A.S. Nuckles of Ponca City forded the icy water of the Arkansas river with his team and buggy and proceeded east about seven miles into the Osage Tribal Reservation to deliver Bert and Nora Colby's last son, Joe (Joseph Franklin) Colby. It was so cold in that small wood frame house that a glass of water froze on the dresser in the bedroom where Nora had her baby.
Bert, then about thirty years of age, had been a cowboy at the "Hundred and One" from 1896 until the death of G.W. Miller in 1903. Although born in a sod house south of Colby, Kan., the town named after his father, Joseph R. Colby, Bert had gone through the eighth grade in Enid before going to work for the Millers. Nora Dennison Hardy, being Osage, had been raised on the reservation east of Ponca City. She had been married previously and had a son, Oral, and a daughter, Irene. Walter, Joe's full brother, had been born almost three years before in 1909. Bert and Nora established their ranch on Nora's Osage Tribal Allotment.
When Joe was 1 year old they moved into their new home built on the place about a half mile east of the old house. In this new home Joe resided all the rest of his life, except for the last five months while being in hospitals and nursing homes.
The Colbys, father Bert and sons Walter and Joe, made their living in the farming and cattle business. Bert Colby and Sons Hereford Ranch was a registered cattle operation which lasted over thirty years. Colby Herefords were known country-wide. Prize bulls and heifers were entered and won their classes in livestock shows in Chicago, Kansas City and Tulsa. In the late 40s, one of their heifers, a grand champion animal of the Tulsa State Fair, was sold at auction in the lobby of the Mayo Hotel in downtown Tulsa. The drought of the 50s caused the Colbys to disperse their registered herd and thereafter they ran commercial cows and stocker cattle.
Joe attended eleven years of school at St. Mary's in Ponca City. One of his twelve years was spent in a one-room schoolhouse built behind the home on the ranch. Father Bert hired a school teacher who taught their four children along with one or two children whose fathers worked on the ranch. Joe attended one semester at the University of Oklahoma.
In the years prior to his marriage to Audrey, Joe worked on the ranch but spent some time driving for Col. Zack T. Miller. Zack, at that time, was traveling the country trading cattle, horses and mules. Some of those trips were to New York and New Jersey, Florida and the other Southeastern states as well as Texas and as far west as the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. Col. Zack also helped the Colbys market some of their registered cattle through his contacts around the country.
Ponca City oil man Lew Wentz was a cattle customer of the Colbys and relied on the expertise of Bert, Walter and Joe to advise him on further cattle purchases. Joe made several trips with Mr. Wentz helping him purchase cattle. Mr. Wentz was a frequent visitor to the ranch and it was not unusual to see him helping himself to a self-guided tour of the pastures and bull pens.
On June 3, 1939, Joe married Audrey Tayrien at the Catholic Church in Pawhuska. They were married 56 years, living all of that time in the big house.
Joe served on the Osage Tribal council 12 years and was on the Osage County Fair Board a number of years.
Senator John Dahl, a close friend of Joe's, named the portion of old U.S. Highway 60, on which the home sits, Joe Colby Road in his honor.
Joe enjoyed fishing and hunting. A number of hunts were made with close friend Zack Miller Jr. in Texas and Montana. He took great pleasure being with his friends and family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brother Walter, half-brother Oral Hardy and half-sister Irene Dunlap.
He is survived by his son, daughter-in-law, three granddaughters, one step-granddaughter, and five great-grandchildren.
Casket bearers will be Bob Stingley, Henry Hainzinger, Henry Lee Hainzinger, Mark Freeman III, Arlin Cales and Jack Klinger.
ELMO??????? ELMO???????
SORRY JUST THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY :-)
HOPE YOUR CHRISTMAS WAS AS TERIFFIC AS YOU ARE!

Yes, Ron,
The Pushtamaha County researcher either took down the name wrong or it is mispelled as Elvis instead of Elmo.
For a number of years, I thought that Holly Wester Colby was a girl. But after two days of internet research I just discovered that Holly is a boy!
Anyway, I also found that he was a B-17 bomber pilot in the 8th Army Air Force. Holly and his sister who's name the census taker in the 1880 census messed up, ( I think it may be Anita), are newly discovered distant cousins of mine. I found that Holly died in 1999 according to SS index.
Also, I found links to a B-17 accident Holly was the pilot and also his name is listed as Major Holly Wester Colby on the newly opened Air Force memorial in Wash D.C.

Who is John Colby that married Nancy Tuck? Family lore has it that he is
the son of Enoch Colby and Dorothy Church. When you look at everything all
the facts don't add up or support that he is their son.
In the 1850 census John Colby and Nancy Tuck are living in Boston, MA. The
census gives John's age as 47 and Nancy's as 45. If this is correct and
John Colby was born in 1803, Dorothy Church would have been 13 years of age
when John was born, probable but not very likely.
John Colby and Nancy Tuck had a son John M. Colby b. 1833 Boston, MA who we
all believed married Hannah Robie and Martha Page. This is incorrect. He
married 12 Apr 1855 Almira K. Newcomb. You can find John and Almira in the
1870 and 1880 census in Boston, MA.
In the Everett, MA vital records is listed a John M. Colby who died 15 Nov
1903 Everett, MA. His death records states that his parents are John Colby
and Nancy Tuck. The age given on the death record, 69 y, 10 m, 29 days.
Making him born 17 Dec 1833. His death record also says his father John
Colby was born in Georgia, Franklin, VT. His mother's place of birth is
listed as Hampton, NH. His son John M. Colby was the informant.
In Everett, MA vital records is a death record for Almira K. (Newcomb) Colby
d. 16 Dec 1897 wife of John M. Colby.
John M. Colby and Almira K. Newcomb had a son John Mason Colby b. 22 Jan
1870 Boston, MA. Is John M. Colby's middle name Mason?
In the Boston vital records is a Nancy Colby d. 1 Aug 1851 w/o John Colby
place of birth Hampton, NH. This probably is Nancy Tuck.

Thanks Alice for trying to sort it out objectively.
Just like much of the family history information that we seek, those people with the knowledge of where the puzzle pieces fit are long dead. All we can do is make educated guess-timates. My grandfather never mentioned that he had an uncle that left Illinois and went west to Oklahoma to work as a doctor But, then again being just a kid then and like most family historians of today I regret not paying attention to any family history stories when told by those that were actually there and made that family history!.

Alice Volkert <alice(a)volkertservices.com> wrote: Very interesting! To have been born in 1852 and have graduated in 1906 is fantastic! And, I had not know that he had married Mabel E. William.
Also, in 1900, they were not in Illinois, but in Mangum, Greer, Oklahoma. Then, in 1910 they were in Gracemont, Caddo, Oklahoma. The 'fun' thing is that in 1900 George was 46 and in 1910 he was 51 - Mabel was 38 in 1900 and 44 in 1910. I wish I knew how they did that!
Also, I wonder how he was attending the University of Illinois to have graduated in 1906 while he was in Oklahoma. I don't think they did extension courses then - or maybe they did!
I see in 1920 when he was married to Maud that he was only 54 to her 25. Since he was born in 1852, he should have been 68!
If marrying a woman more than half your age makes you younger, please don't tell my husband!
I don't find him in 1930 - which I think I should have since he died in December of that year. But, whatever he must have been quite something!!

American. But the line for him on the census shows his father as born in

Dr. John M. (Mack) Colby March 2, 1922-Nov. 27, 2006
story updated December 01. 2006 11:57AM
Advertisment
Services have been set for Dr. John M. (Mack) Colby, 84, a longtime veterinarian in Monroe, who died Monday at Mercy Memorial Hospital.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until a memorial service at noon Saturday at the Allore Chapel of Martenson Family of Funeral Homes. The Rev. Christopher D. Fairbairn of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Northville, will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.
Born March 2, 1922, in Dearborn, he was the son of Dr. Stanley G. and Gladys (McClelland) Colby. He married Helen Margaret Kronbach March 24, 1946, at Trinity Lutheran Church. She died Oct. 14, 1994. Recently he made his home with Mary Edmondson.
He was a 1938 graduate of Monroe High School.
He was a 1943 graduate of Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. He was the first son of a graduate from that veterinary school to also have completed the same program.
He served in the Army from August, 1942, to May, 1943. He then served in the Army Reserves until 1961 when he was discharged with the rank of captain.
He had been baptized in the Presbyterian Church.
He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Monroe.
He had owned and operated Colby Veterinary Clinic on N. Telegraph Rd. for 60 years, working at first with his father and later with his wife. He retired in 2002.
He also was a farmer.
Surviving are a son, David (Nancy) of Traverse City; a daughter, Susan Patton of Farmington Hills; a sister, Adelaide Secfick of Fenton; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Jr.
Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Monroe County or the Trinity Lutheran Church choir.
Since she named her first son John after her father, I think you are
correct! And, it is less that 3 miles from Amesbury to South Hampton, I
think.
