Re: Eben and Hiram's Obituraries
Thank you so much for posting Eben and Hiram's obituraries! They were
brothers. Eben was the grandfather of my first cousin (David Henry Colby)
whose father was the George W(ilbur) Colby mentioned and son of Eben. I
lived with them for a short time in Oakland.
Hiram and Eben had a brother Harvey. The three of them set off for
California via the Isthmus of Panama where Harvey died. Hiram and Eben
continued on to California, and as you can see by their obits "the rest is
(their) history."
I've done quite a bit of research on these brothers and their antecedents
for my cousin David H. Colby
These obits help flesh out their lives for us and I thank you very much for
your work. I'm sure others have discovered previously unknown information
from your research too, and must be as grateful to you as I amt.

Therresa C. Rasmussen
SALINA, UT - Surrounded by her loving family, Therresa Colby Rasmussen, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away Oct. 19, 2006, following an extended illness, in Levan.
Therresa was born in the family home in Salina, June 10, 1913, a daughter of Roy and Elizabeth Crane Colby.
She married Maurice Farrell Rasmussen, Nov. 23, 1933 in Richfield, and they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Manti LDS temple March 1, 1940.
Of all Therresa's loves, her family was most dear. Family members have fond memories of holiday decorating and parties, especially Christmas and Halloween. Therresa was a very loving mother and a true grandmother to all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Contents of her toy drawers were shared and often generously given away to admiring little children.
Her homemaking and gardening talents adorned the family home and neighborhood. Therresa's deliciously unique dinner roll recipe could not be unsurpassed nor duplicated, even though she willingly taught her techniques to promising cooks. Fun times abounded in the Accord Lake cabin that Maurice and Therresa designed, built and maintained for as long as possible.
Service was the hallmark of Therresa's life. As a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in many capacities including Sunday school, Relief Society and young women's organizations and supported her husband in his many callings. Therresa was a kind and generous neighbor and friend. Anyone who came to her door was promptly fed or given something, and always invited to come back soon. She never hesitated to care for the hungry and the homeless. A friend described her as “a positive, talented and public-spirited person.”
After her family, her next love was music. She took pleasure in every type of music, and she was an accomplished alto saxophonist. As a member of the Bryce's Arcadians dance band, she played for dances all over Utah during the Big Band Era. Therresa directed numerous choirs and singing groups over the years, as they performed for various civic and church groups. She was a self-taught pianist and organist.
Therresa is survived by her dear husband, Maurice, Salina; her five children and their spouses, Rodney and Eunice Rasmussen; Janet and Neil Beach, all Salina; Evelyn and Jerold Shields; Kathern and Lyle Taylor, all Salt Lake City; and Brad and Kathy Rasmussen, Hurricane. Her posterity also includes 26 grandchildren; 102 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include a brother, Darwin and Wona Colby, California; sisters-in-law, Vonda Colby and Virginia R. Dickert, both Salina; Shirley Rasmussen, Boise, Idaho; Shirley Probert, Scipio; Donna and Paul Martin, Las Vegas; and several nieces and nephews complete the family circle.
Funeral services were held Oct. 23, in the Salina LDS 2nd ward 87 South 100 East.
Interment will be in the Salina Pioneer Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Tina with home health care, hospice, and the nurses, nurses aids and doctors in all the hospitals in the community that have helped during the past several years in the care of Therresa, and a special thanks to Kaye, Amberlee and their staff at The Victorian House in Levan.
Funeral directors, Springer Turner, Richfield, Salina and Gunnison.

Edward Eugene Colby
94, in San José, California. In the late 1950s, Stanford music librarian
Edward Colby, who died September 22, 2006 at the age of 94, envisioned the
university as a West Coast focal point for the use of recorded sound in the
service of scholarship. With record collector, opera and Victor Company
expert William R. Moran of La Cañada, California, Edward Colby founded the
Archive of Recorded Sound. Both founders are now gone from the scene - Moran
died in early 2004 - but the renowned institution they started and fostered
continues to serve researchers with representative and significant
recordings of music and the spoken word.
Ed Colby, known for his wry and inventive sense of humor, warmth of
personality, and dedication to public service, was born July 5, 1912 at
Oakland, California to Ida Cheshire Colby and Eugene Colby. From his mother,
he acquired a love of poetry and an ability to memorize and recite. From his
father, Ed learned to love music. He graduated in 1935 from University of
California, Berkeley, with a B.A. in Music Composition. While at Berkeley,
Ed also studied Sanskrit.
Ed Colby found work, and a calling, at the Oakland Public Library during
the 1930s. He resumed his education and earned a certificate in
librarianship from U.C. Berkeley in 1941. Because of Ed's linguistic
ability, the U.S. Army provided him with instruction in Mandarin and sent
him to China with Army Intelligence for a year and a half during World War
II, an extraordinary and unforgettable experience for him. He also had
opportunities to pursue his musical interests during his 4 1/2 year military
career. Ed returned from Army service to Oakland Public Library Music
Division where he met Helen Pearson, originally of Chicago and also a lover
of music and of life. Helen and Ed were married in the Unitarian Church on
the U.C. Berkeley campus in 1947.
When Ed was hired by Stanford University Library to head the Music
Library in 1949, Ed and Helen moved from Oakland to the Peninsula. The
couple made homes in College Terrace, Barron Park, Menlo Park and Palo
Alto's Professorville in the following years. During the 1950s, Helen gave
birth to two daughters. Ed served as president of the Music Library
Association and, in 1956, earned a Master of Arts degree in music from
Stanford. In 1958, with Bill Moran, he founded the Archive of Recorded Sound
at Stanford. Also in 1958, the Colby family moved to their home in West San
José. During his 29 years at Stanford, Ed Colby taught music bibliography as
a lecturer in music, and led the music library and archive through a vibrant
growth period. He brought his many interests to his work life.
Colby's knowledge of several languages aided his reference work and
allowed him to make multi-lingual puns to the delight and despair of
students and colleagues. Retired from Stanford in 1978, Ed traveled,
composed music (including Epithalamion for a California Wedding, performed
by Herbert Nanney, for daughter Lisa's wedding to John), and continued to
work with Helen on topics including the work and legacy of Swiss physician
Albrecht von Haller. He continued to support and use public transportation
(having loved Oakland's Key System) and to support conservation efforts. He
was a regular at the De Anza College recycling center long before recycling
gained wide popularity. During his retirement years, Parkinson's disease
gradually, but surely, limited his activity; Helen filled the role of
constant caregiver.
When his illness was at its worst, a quip or pun from him would let
family members know he was OK. Ed Colby died at home in the company of his
family on Friday, September 22, 2006, at the age of 94.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of San José; daughter, Lisa
Christiansen and her husband, John and their grand-niece, Jennifer, also of
San José; daughter, Jeanne Colby and her partner, Ken Lima of Mountain View;
cousins on both sides of his family, many friends and assorted feline
companions who frequently played their piano compositions for him.
No services will be held, at his request. Those who wish to make a gift
in Ed Colby's memory are asked, with thanks, to contact the Memorial Fund of
the Stanford Libraries for gifts to the sound archive or to contact the
Music Department, Braun Music Center, for gifts to Stanford Music Department
outreach to K-12 education. Donations in memoriam to Edward Colby for the
Archive of Recorded Sound should be made out to Memorial Fund of the
Stanford University Libraries with a note for Edward Colby and sent to Kelly
D Morris, Development Associate GREEN LIBRARY Stanford University Stanford,
California, 94305-6004. Donations for K-12 outreach in music may be made out
to Stanford University with a note for Edward Colby and sent to Mario
Champagne, Administrative Services Manager Music Department BRAUN Music
Center, Room 101E Stanford University Stanford, California, 94305-3076.

I read the letter for any clues that might connect it with my Colby forbears

there's a Maria somewhere, so I've copied the particulars and will
check.......Eleanor Colby Zue in Vershire, VT

Harold Burns Colby
April 2, 1927 - October 10, 2006
Harold "Hal" Colby died Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at his home after complications from a stroke. Hal was born April 2, 1927, in Denver, CO to Burns and Elsie Colby.
Hal's ancestry includes 19th Century Colorado pioneers, Ben and Mary Carver, who settled in Antonito, Colorado in 1890. From Antonito they moved to Creed where Ben Carver had an interest in the Amethyst Mine. Ben and Mary moved to Denver in the early 1900's and Ben Carver became both a Colorado State Senator and Colorado State Representative. Hal's Mother, Elsie, was born in Denver to Ben and Mary.
Hal was raised in the Denver and Boulder areas. He served in the Navy during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, CO and received a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He married Debe Smith on September 22, 1975. He was previously married to Mary Lou Lebsock.
Hal joined International Business Machines in February of 1952. He spent 35 years with IBM, retiring in May of 1987. During his time with IBM he held many different positions including customer engineer, marketing representative, systems engineer, educator, staff systems planner, and corporate planner. During his years with IBM, he and his wife, Debe, lived in many states including Colorado, Minnesota, Texas, and Connecticut.
Hal was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served on the Building and Grounds Committee. He was in charge of moving the church organ from the 6th and White church location to the current location on Cortland Avenue and 27 1/2 Road. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were a special joy to him. The annual trip with the entire clan to Trappers Lake meant a great deal to him. He also enjoyed classical music, working on his stereo system and traveling with Debe in their motor home. He was a volunteer with Senior Companions.
In addition to his wife, Hal is survived by two sons; Steve Colby of Englewood, CO and Kevin Colby of Grand Junction, CO, two daughters; Jill Colby (George) of Golden, CO and Lou Ann Colby of Florissant, CO, five grandchildren; Amy and husband Kelly, Nadine and husband Richard, James (Angie), Andrea and husband Nate, and Jordanna Colby. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren; Mitchell Slutzker, Kevin Slutzker, Alex Jessen, Spencer Jessen, Riley Jessen, Garrett Jessen, Sydney Colby, Breanna Dumont, and Brodie Dumont; a sister-in-law, Carol Colby of Woodland Park, CO, a brother-in-law, Merrill Smith of Orange, CA, his mother-in-law, Olive Smith of Dothan. AL, and three nieces; Gail, Lee, and Cassie. He is also survived by his special four-legged friends, Annie and Molly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Burns and Elsie Colby, his brother, Bob Colby, and his father-in-law, Wayne Smith.
Although Hal was a man of few words, he influenced the lives of those around him through his love of God, and his actions. Everyone who knew him enjoyed his keen sense of humor. He will be missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held Friday, October 13, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 3940 27 1/2 Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Organ Memorial Fund of First Presbyterian Church of Grand Junction, Senior Companions, or Marillac Clinic.
