Hi Kate,
Thank you for your message. It would be most kind, if you could supply me
with any details regarding the Lincolnshire Colbys. I am trying at present to
corrolate as much information as possible so as to track the spread of the family
from Norfolk. As you might be aware I am writing a small (actually not so
small!) illustrated history and would be more than delighted to share my findings
with you. Isn't it interesting that there is a small village by the name of
Colby only 15 miles from where the first Colbys are recorded? Of course many
family names are place patronymic in origin. People often took their names from
the town they lived in.
I look forward to hearing from you.

I am looking for information about my grand father John Samuel Colby born about 1902 in St Olave Rotherhithe (or Southwark). His parents were James and Agnes (nee Jennings).
Any information would be most welcome.
Thanks
Tristan C. Salazar,
Has someone by now apprised you that the American Colby, Anthony, most likely
descends from Lincolnshire Colbys, from Sempringham? I can fill in that
information, if you are interested.

Hello Christina,
I was very interested to note your posting regarding research into the Colby
name. I am currently trying to write an illustrated history of the family
which, as I am sure you are aware, is one of considerable age.
As far as I can gather, the first Colbys ( the name was to begin with de
Colbi, meaning from the place called Colbi ) originally settled in Norfolk
(England) at a place called Cawston, about 10 miles north East of the City of Norwich
. On the A140 North of Norwich sits the village of Colby which would seem
likely to have taken its name from the family. or perhaps vice versa.!
The ealiest recorded Colby was one ROBERT DE COLBI and his brothers WARINE
and SIMON who were alive in 1199. Here is an extract from Blomefield:-
"At the survey Coleby was a berewic, belonged to Cawston, and the whole
continued with that till Will. de Burgh severed it by granting half the town and
half the advowson from Cawston, which in 1199 ROBERT DE COLBI held with WARINE
DE COLBI and SIMON DE COLBI, his brothers. The Colbys' manor here, called
Oldstead Hall, descended in that family from ROBERT DE COLEBI."
Exciting stuff, Eh? So here we have the first 3 Colbys alive in the 12th
Century, nearly one thousand years ago, and not only that but the name of the
first Colby Manor House- OLDSTEAD HALL!! I am planning a trip with camera to see
if there still a house there and of course to visit Colby Village and the
surrounding countryside in search of our earliest recorded ancestors.
It would seem that the 6 main branches of the family are, in chronological
order:-
Colby of Norfolk , England 12th century.
Colby of Yorkshire, England 13th century. The Yorkshire spelling of the name
was COLBYE during the 17th Century.
Colby of Suffolk, England 16th century.
Colby of Massacheusetts, U.S.A 17th century.
Colby of South Wales, Great Britain. 17th century. There is some speculation
that this branch of the family is an off shoot from the Yorkshire Colbys.
Colby of Great Torrrington, Devon 18th century.
I am sure that there are many more branches of the family yet to be
discovered.
I would be most interested if you could kindly tell me about your branch and
perhaps be so kind as to let me have any family trees pertaining to your
branch.
I live in Cirencester, Gloucestershire and am descended from the South Wales
Colbys.
Look forward to hearing and sharing information.
Tristan Colby Salazar.

Hi Tina - My name is Katie Colby - I live in Middletown, New Jersey.
I am also researching my Colby line... I have it as far back as the early 1800's with Jeremiah S. Colby. But that is where I am stuck. I know he was born her ein the States in New Hampshire. He was born in 1821 He married Mary Baldwin who was horn in Maine in 1829. They both appear on the 1850 census in Medford, Middlesex County, Massachusettes.
I know the "Colby" Homestead in the States is in Amesbury Massachussetts.
The Colby-Macy House still stands and it is the site of reunions of the entire COLBY CLAN every so often. I have all this information and the information on Anthony Colby who came to the States from England and settled in Amesbury
in the 1600s'. If you access the Colby Clan Association Website, you can see what I am relating to.
PLEASE email me back - keep me posted and I will go thru my information and see if I can get anyone traced back to Leeds.
My significant other - over here in the States - was born in Southend on Sea
any where near you? He is returning home on May 9th to visit him mom who is not well at this time.
KEEP IN TOUCH
Katie Colby

Hi Ron,
That must be some local name for a particular area of Henniker. Weare
and Henniker town lines are common with each other. As with the town of
Warner, NH. There is section known as Waterloo, but no town by that name, or
Cilleyville in the town of Andover, NH for samples.
If you find otherwise, let me know. Being a native and having lived
in NH for my 69 years, I've never heard of it.
Regards,
Sam Colby
Bow, NH
For what it's worth, I knew Delia Harding Edson, born in Vershire, VT probably in 1880 or so, who might have been a sibling of this Harding. I didn't know her mother was a Colby, though. Maybe I can do some digging here in the town records sometime. Eleanor Colby Zue, Vershire VT
I was pointed towards a 1895 Atlas that is online today.
For Merrimack county there is a town called Colbys.
Colbys is between Henniker and Weare on the county line.
Does anyone have anything on the town?
