Do you know if John had any other siblings? I have a Frederick Archibald Colby, b. 1833, married Isabella Secord Young on Dec. 30, 1858 or Jan 12, 1859 in the Niagara area, Lincoln County, Ontario.
While searching for Colby's in Lincoln County, Maine I found this family
Jacob Colby and Abigail
Children:
Mary Jane Colby b. 3 Aug 1822
Jonathan Colby b. 6 Mar 1824
James Colby b. 9 Jan 1826
Jacob Folinsby Colby b. 29 Oct 1827
Does anyone have any information on the identity of Jacob and Abigail??
Thanks
Ron
Look up Dorcas Colby who maried Jacob Follansbee to see if there might be a connection. I don't have info on children for them, but maybe there was an Abigail? Dorcas started out in NH - but maybe she moved to ME.
I am in a big project and can't look right now, so let me know. Thanks!

I've seen the statements that Anthony Colby arrived on the Arbella but
when
I've researched that vessel and its passenger list, I couldn't confirm
it.
I hadn't looked at the Confidence which carried others of my ancestors.
It's amazing that we know as much as we do about this part of history, I
guess at this point, I'm just glad they got here and I don't worry too
much
about which small, vulnerable wooden, wind-driven vessel they came on,
it's
just amazing that they arrived and began - unknowiingly - to build a new
country and change the history of the world.

b. 17 Feb 1815 Westport, ME d. 18 Jan 1875 Westport, ME.
He was engaged in cutting up some wood on the shore near his home at the
upper end of Wesport, opposite this town, when the axe slipped and severed
an artery in his right leg near the ankle, causing death before medical
assistance could be secured. He was alone at the time and started for the
house but fainted and fell before reaching it.
The Cruse of the Franklin.
The Franklin, a vessel of 67 tons, owned by William P. Lennox of Wiscasset,
and Alfred Lennox, employed as a coaster between Boston and Wiscasset, had,
in the spring of 1872, the following perilous experience:
The captain was William Colby, and the other three men, James Colby, Atwell
Smith and Charles West, were all of this town.
"On Sunday morning, March 3rd, she set sail from Boston, bound for
Wiscasset, and laden with several hundred bushels of corn, seventy-five
barrels of flour and a general cargo, the total valued at about $4,000.
"When off Cape Elizabeth, on the night of the 4th, a severe gale was
encountered, that carried away the jib halyard and jib boom. The storm
increased in fury, and the crew had to keep her off in order to get the boom
in. During the night of the 4th and morning of the 5th, the gale was very
high, but shortly after daylight it was succeeded by thick weather. On
Thursday evening, the bowsprit, foresail, both jibs and one anchor were
lost. On Wednesday morning, when the vessel was about twenty miles from
Cape Elizabeth, the main throat halyards were cut away, and a portion of her
mainmast saved. The gale continued, and the vessel scudded before it until
Saturday noon, shipping water continually, and this froze so thickly that
her waist was quickly filled with ice. On Saturday afternoon, the gale
abating somewhat, a preventer stay was rigged to set the jib, and no event
of interest occurred during the night. On Sunday, the 10th, the captain
found himself in the afternoon off Georgian Shoals, about sixty miles north
east of Cape Cod. On Monday the wind was northeast, and as the storm had
abated slightly Captain Colby rigged a piece of the mainsail, and under a
severe snow storm ran until eight o'clock A.M. Tuesday. On Wednesday they
ran under bare poles before the gale, and on Thursday night, with the wind
southeast, and remained on that course until Saturday, the 15th. On Sunday
morning the Franklin ran into a snow storm and wind from the east, and again
headed for the coast. The wind veered again during the night to the
northwest, and again the vessel was driven to sea, being unable to make
sufficient sail to reach port. On Tuesday the gale had somewhat moderated,
and the vessel, which was filled with ice, lay to until Wednesday morning,
when the wind again went to the southwest and drove the vessel shoreward.
All that day, and on Thursday and Friday, the craft was at the mercy of the
gale. On Saturday a brief calm followed, and the captain again headed for
the coast, but the wind giving out, he lay to until Monday morning.
"On Tuesday, the vessel was headed in a northerly direction in the hope of
sighting land, or encountering a vessel, and this course was kept until
Thursday morning, when the spoke an unknown vessel, from Boston to
Baltimore, which supplied them with wood and water, and, assuring Capt.
Colby that if he would keep on that course he would soon meet the New York
pilot boats, parted company with the schooner. The prediction of the
unknown captain proved true.
"Captain Colby reports that he has been forty-five years engaged as a
coaster between Wiscasset and Boston and in voyages across the Atlantic, and
never has he encountered such a severe and continuous gale as the one from
which he was so miraculously saved by the promptness of the New York pilots.
"Captain Colby had no nautical instruments on the vessel, with the exception
of a compass, and if he had had them they would have been useless, as none
of the crew understood navigation."

Winifred "Winnie" Colby
Kennewick, Wash.
Winifred 'Winnie' Colby passed away Saturday night, July 10, 2004, at her home in Kennewick, WA, at the age of 89.
Born to Charles and Ada Young, on April 11, 1915 in Manchester, England, she was the 6th of 7 children.
In 1935 at the age of 19, she traveled by steamship, 'USS Canard,' from England to New York City. Her goal was to be with her grandmother, Elizabeth Hall in Salt Lake City.
In 1937, Winnie moved to Los Angeles to attend business college. While attending college she worked as a governess in Hollywood.
After completing her schooling she returned to Salt Lake City where she began working for a real estate company as a stenographer. In the early 1940s, she moved to Sacramento, CA, and worked for a CPA. Moving north from California she lived briefly in Bend and Pendleton, OR, before settling in 1948 in Walla Walla, WA.
Early in 1950, she began working for Sears as a switchboard operator, did personnel work and general secretarial duties. When Sears opened in a new store in Pasco in 1954, she transferred there and took a job as a manager's secretary.
She worked for Sears for a total of 34 years, during which time she 'trained' 8 bosses.
Her work was her passion. She told many stories of soup cooking in the lunchroom, the many days when they dressed up in costumes, the hundreds of birthday cakes, the tricycle races in the parking lot and the way the employees were family.
Winnie was a friend to all. Her unique, infectious laugh brought smiles to her large circle of loyal friends.
Winnie was an active member of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior in Pasco, WA.
As a lifetime member of Soroptomist International Pasco-Kennewick, she was given the 'Woman of Distinction' award and also was a 'Women Helping Women' Certificate of Honor recipient. A tireless member, she participated right up until her passing.
As a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, she received the Pasco-Kennewick 'Woman of Achievement' award in 1977, and was subsequently awarded the Washington State 'Woman of Achievement' that same year.
She was a member of the Goodwill Auxiliary, where she loved participating in the fund-raisers, especially the fashion shows and doll sales. Winnie was an avid supporter of the Wilson House in Pasco, a clubhouse for persons with long term mental illnesses.
In 198, she was presented with a 'Community Appreciation Award' for her efforts. She also supported the Bailie Memorial Youth Ranch in Basin City, WA.
Winnie is survived by her 2 children, daughter, Veronica Denslow of Issaquah, WA, and son, Dan (Virginia) Colby of Connell, WA.
She had 5 grandchildren, Brad (Elaine) Denslow of Issaquah, WA; Mike (Kayte) Denslow of Richland, WA; Jeff, Eric and Kierstin Colby of Connell, WA; and 4 great-grandchildren, Lauren and Tyler Denslow of Richland, WA, and Bobby and Mitchell Denslow of Issaquah, WA.
Winnie is also survived by her extended family in England.
There will be a celebration of her life held Friday, July 16, 2004, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1600 W. 10th Ave., in Kennewick.
Donations may be sent to Children's Hospital and Medical Center, PO Box 5371 MS:CL-04, Seattle, WA 98105-0371 or Soroptomist International Foundation, PO Box 3905, Pasco, WA 99302.

Alice Volkert emailed: Ah yes! But in the Spring of 1630, Anthony Colby came to America on the ship "Arbella" with the "Winthrop Fleet".
I don't remember the source for the following information, but now I must do this search again!
"In 1630, John Winthrop sailed on the flagship Arbella with a fleet of 11 ships from England to the New World. In his company, on the ship Confidence, was Anthony Colby. The Confidence sailed on 8 April 1630 from Yarmouth and reached Boston on 12 June. A full account of the voyage can be found in Winthrop's "History of New England" and describes the tempests and the hostile fleets. The fleet first saw land at Mt. Desert, then coasted by the places where he afterwards dwelt. They mention with delight the land-breeze, 'so pleasant a sweet air as did much refresh us, and there came a smell off the shore like the smell of a garden.' While waiting for the tide and making the port at Salem, Mass., most of the people went ashore at Cape Ann, 'and gathered store of fine strawberries. The land seemed much like England, but with fowl and fish in great plenty. Anthony lived on the ship four months before housing could be made.'"
Ah yes! But in the Spring of 1630, Anthony Colby came to America on the
ship "Arbella" with the "Winthrop Fleet".

Westport VR's book says this Henry went to Dresden about 1820, this alone
poses a problem with Henry having a 2nd wife. Henry is the only Henry
Colby in the 1830 and 1840 census for Dresden.
I find Henry in the 1830 census as follows:
1 male under 20
1 male under 30
1 male under 50
1 female under 10
1 female under 15
1 female under 20
1 female under 60 This suggest that his wife was 5 to 10 years older than

The 1840 census I find Henry and family.
1 male 50 to 60
1 female 5 to 10
1 female 15 to 20
1 female 50 to 60
Living next door to Henry is a Thomas Colby as follows
1 male under 4
1 male 20 to 30
2 females under 5
1 female 20 to 30
in the 1850 census Henry isn't listed but Thomas and family are living in
Augusta.
Here is Thomas and family
Thomas R. Colby b. 1810 m. Apr 19, 1833 Dresden, Maine* Charlotte Rines b.
1812
Children:
Emily Ann Colby b. 5 Nov 1834 Dresden, Lincoln, Maine*
Syble A. Colby b. 27 Nov 1835 Dresden, Lincoln, Maine*
Melissa D. Colby b. 29 Sep 1837 Dresden, Lincoln, Maine*
Thomas H. Colby b. 1838
Mary C. Colby b. 1840
Malvina A. Colby b. 31 Mar 1844 Dresden, Lincoln, Maine*
Louisa C. Colby b. 1847
Following children listed in 1860 Census
Frances W. Colby b. 1850 Augusta, Kennebec County, Maine
Ellen Colby b. 1852 b. Augusta, Kennebec County, Maine
* SOURCE: FHL Film: 0010820, Town and vital records, 1794-1891 Dresden
(Lincoln County, Maine). Town Clerk.
Also living with Thomas R. Colby in 1850 is a Mary Colby age 71 (probably
his mother).
If Thomas is s/o Henry Colby this suggests that Henry wasn't married twice
and Henry preceded Mary in death.
The following Colby marriages are found in Dresden along with Thomas and
Charlotte.
Mary Colby b. 1823 m. 26 Nov 1841 Joseph R. Cromwell
Marguered B. Colby b. 1807m. 22 Jan 1826 Samuel Lilly
Mehitable Colby b. 1815 m. 5 Aug 1842 Washington Furbush
Cromwell family history says the father of Mary Colby was a Henry.
Any ideas on whether Henry married twice.
Is Thomas the s/o Henry?
Are the girls that married in Dresden the daughters of Henry?
Feedback would be greatly appreciated on this.
Ron

Sorry, I screwed up the last message. Got the wrong name. Here is correct info. While in White Pine, CO I found a Mrs. A.L. Colby, born 13 Jan 1891, age 45 years. That would make the birthdate 1846. Hope this means something to a Colby ancestor. Contact me if you need more info.

One of my hobbies is to visit old "ghost towns" here in Colorado. While there I try to record any marked graves I find and then post them on the appropriate family message board. It is very rewarding when someone contacts me and tells me I have found their Great-Grandfather or something like that. While in White Pine, CO I found a Mrs. A.L. Colby, died 13 Jan 1891, age 45 years. That would make the birthdate about 1846. Hope this means something to a Colby ancestor. Contact me if you need more info.
