COLBY: Ellis S. "Bump," 94, of 400 Bobbin Mill Road, Lunenburg, passed away peacefully at his residence, Thursday afternoon, May 8, 2003.
He was born in Lunenburg, Sept, 24, 1908 one of 14 children, son of Luke and Nellie (Smith) Colby. Other than a brief, month-long pilgrimage to the Midwest as a teenager, Ellis has been a lifelong figure in the community of Lunenburg. Although most of his life had been spent farming, gardening, and making quality maple syrup, he and his brother Howard did own and operate a saw mill, which involved both families, in Lunenburg for many years.
He served as a Selectman for several years, and in recent years had been considered by many as a local historian for the community, and he was renowned for his stories about the past.
"Bump" was a predictable figure, to be seen slowly touring the back roads of Lunenburg at the crack of dawn every morning checking for the presence of wildlife, prior to pursuing his daily duties in his large garden, and then sitting on his porch waving to passing friends. He and his wife operated a fruit stand in front of the house for many years, which was a local source of fresh vegetables for locals and visitors alike. Over the years he accumulated many awards for his quality vegetables at the Lancaster Fair.
He was a member of the Benton Lodge 88, F&AM of Guildhall.
He was predeceased by his wife, Verna "Mam" Colby, in March 2000; and a son, Blaine "Bud" Colby, in 1988.
He is survived by two daughters, Gayle Ottmann of Quechee, and Laurie LaBounty of Lunenburg; a daughter-in-law, Loretta Colby of Lunenburg; 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; a brother, Howard Colby of Lunenburg; two sisters, Rheba Hartshorn of St. Johnsbury and Rachel Gould of Kingston, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Colby farm, 400 Bobbin Mill Road, on Sunday, May 11, from 2-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 12 at 11 a.m. at the farm with the Rev. Gerry Piper officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery, Lunenburg.
Those who wish may make donations to the Kevin Colby Scholarship Fund, in care of Fran and Wes Colby, Bobbin Mill Road, Lunenburg, VT 05906; or the Lunenburg Methodist Church, in care of Debbie Thomas, South Lunenburg Road, Lunenburg, VT 05906; or the Alden Balch Memorial Library, in care of Arlene Lewis, Lunenburg, VT 05905.
The Ross Funeral Home, Whitefield Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Those wishing to sign an electronic register may log onto www.rossfuneral.com.
ok Yes, I agree must be Charles child of Obadiah & Sally Hoyt Colby.
The 1850 census also has Elizabeth J. Perry age 27 and Ellen M. Davis age
9/12 living there. Could they have been running a boarding house??
I think Margara (or whatever her name is) was a Spinney. That's where her
child's name comes from and on the 1860 census there is a big family of
Spinney above them on the same page.
And, I suppose the Dinsmore guy must have married Margaret and she must have
died having little Ellena. So he remarried and kept his father-in-law.
Wasn't that nice of him! But, I suppose the farm actually belonged to
Charles.
The ages sure are odd on the different census pages, though. Robelina is 10
in 1850 and 17 in 1860. And, Charles is 52 in 1860 and 69 in 1870. He
probably felt that old. <g>

PBS is going to run a series called "Colonial House" in May.
26 people are going live and experience what it was like to live in 1628
colonial America.
You can read more about it on pbs.orghttp://www.pbs.org/wnet/colonialhouse/
Hey Ron, the book I have is actually called "Old Kittery and her Families"
published in 1903 by Everett Stackpole. Unfortunately there is no mention of
any Colbys in the entire 800 pages!!!!! I am now checking for Dinsmore and
Spinney......I have Spinney and Marr heirs from the Georgetown area on my
paternal grandmother's side of the family and the reason I bought the book
was the Bradstreets are in it and i forget where they fit in....will have to
look on my fan chart...........no Dinsmore family listed in the book.....did
find Spinneys, but only one Charles and he was married in 1798...will take a
closer look on the weekend as the index only lists major families and does
not xref families married into the family lists....does that make sense? you
know what I mean, allied families...........I also have the New England
Genealogical Recorder.......supposed to be a dull weekend so will do some
research...........best.....Jim
will go page by page and try to find Margara, Margaret, and
Marguerites..........
