Reuben son of John & Elizabeth Colby is only a 4th cousin to Malinda
daughter of Joseph & Sally Weeks Colby.
Samuel B. Straw is son on Levi & Miriam Jones Straw. Hannah is Levi's
sister. Their parents are Jacob & Lydia Ordway Straw.
Samuel was a surgeon. He was a dentist but a surgeon first. He enlisted
from Bangor, ME on 5 Nov 1861 as a Capt age 60 yrs in E. Co 11th I. R. ME
and resigned 18 march 1862. He enlisted 24 Oct 1862 from Bangor ME as Asst
Surgeon S Co 6th I. R. ME and mustered out 15 Aug 1864..
In his early years Dr. Straw studied medicine and practiced the profession
for twelve years before practicing dentistry. At the breaking out of the
Rebellion he joined a Maine Regiment in the capacity of surgeon and served
with it till it was discharged. He then offered his service to the governor
of New York and was appointed a surgeon at the hospital at Lansingburg, NY
(northern section of Troy) and afterward at Emira (NY). While a resident of
Maine he was for a time the grand-master of the lodge of Odd Fellows. During
his residence in this city he was engaged in the profession of dentistry
with his son. Per obituary in the Newburgh (New York) Journal of Aug 5 1884
and included in the history of Hopkinton, NH (Life and Times Of Hopkinton by
