To James F. Colby,
I am also descended from the Ruggles Colby line - however my line is as follows: Anthony to Samuel who m. Eliz. Sargent; to Samuel who m. Dorothy Ambrose; to Ruggles who m. Abigail Davis; to Henry who m. Mary Herrenden (Herridan ?); to Nehemiah who m. Phoebe Fink; to Nehemiah who m. Nancy Condon; to Charles Sylvester who m. Catherine Alley; to Charles Orrin who m. Grace Hume who were my grandparents.
I grew up in Maine and had no idea of the family I had there. I would love to exchange info with those of you who are in this line.
Janet Heck
Baton Rouge, LA
Well you are on the right track and we are obviously related. I was born in
Wiscasset. Most of the Colby's descended from Ruggles and Ambrose and
Ambroses nephew Benjamen actually lived on Westport Island which is and
independent community. Originally it was called Jeremysquam and was part of
Freetown ( now Edgecomb) across the harbour from Wiscasset and joined by the
long bridge. I have a 33 page document i will be happy to send you if you
provide me with your mailing address. I did this up for the Colby reunion in
Edgecomb two summers ago. Eventuall the Colby's did move up off the island
and some moved into Wiscasset and surrounding areas of Alna and Sheepscott
and Edgecomb and some stayed on the island. These records were compiled by
Beatrice Harriman in the 40's from family bibles and oral reminisces of the
older Colbys still living on Westport. There are quite a few Henry's ....it
was a real popular name. My line of descent from Amesbury is Anthony,
Samuel, Samuel, Ruggles and one of Ruggles son's was Henry who married Mary
Herriden but they were a generation or two back from your Henry and Mary and
had no Emma....they did have an Ebenezer, my 4 times great grandfather and
they did have a son Henry. Henry the father bought several parcels of land
on the island including one from his father in law Nehemiah Heriden and
later more from Heriden's heirs. My Henry and Mary were married in 1766 or
so. Henry and Mary also had a son Nehemiah and HE had a son Henry probably
born before 1800. I don't have much info on him. My Henry and Mary also had
a son Samuel who HAD a son Henry who served in the war of 1812 and did marry
Mary Rines of Wiscasset but again I think they are too early to be the ones
you seek. I cannot find any children listed and i believe he remarried
several times. Now my grandfather Ebenezer married Betsey McKenney of
Edgecomb and there were several other Colby/Mc Kenney marriages.....I have a
list somewhere...now that I have a project I will dig all that stuff
out....its in a pile here by the computer and the Colby's who did move to
Wiscasset mostly lived on the old Bath Road which ran through Woolwich where
my great grandfather Daniel Marston Colby married Martha Vaughan
Brookings.........he would have been Ebenezer's great great great grandson.
I will have to research the Nason's and Getchells and see if they are
Woolwich names........Ebenezer also had a Henry who would have been over 14
yrs old in 1819. We also have a James Henry a John Henry and a William
Henry. I will do some crosschecking in several other books I have on the
Colbys. I am a native of Wiscasset but live in Portland now. Will try to get
more info to you on the possible relationships of the Getchells and
Nasons......the McKenneys and Brookings could certainly be cousins. Jim
Colby

I am searching for the parents of Simeon who was born in Dummerston Twnp, Windham, Vermont. He married Charlotte Sylvia Mudge in Bushnell's Basin, NY in 1839. He is listed in the 1840 and 1850 census for Macoupin Co., IL. In the 1840 census a woman living near him was Prasis (Persis?) Colby, between the ages of 70 and 80, Was she his mother? He apparently died on the California trail in 1852. I would appreciate any information. Thanks

I am looking for any information on Hannah D Colby m. Cyrus T. Goodwin 21Jul1850.
I need dates of birth and parents and where they lived at the time Hannah married. Hannah lived with Cyrus Goodwin in Newbury, Essex Massachusetts. Only one issue that I know of, Francis W. b. abt 1853 wondering if there are others.

Does anyone have birth of Benjamin COLBY 1782 or 1792? His death certificate indicates Oct 21, 1858 Rockport, Essex, MD he was born in South Village 1792 son of Moses COLBY and Polly. His 1850 Rockport, Essex, MA indicates he is 68 years (birth would be 1782) in MA. Moses COLBY did not marry Polly WITHAM until 23 Aug 1802 which is after birth of Benjamin. Can he be a younger brother or nephew of Moses COLBY. I have not researched wills or land records of Moses and his ancestors. Any help solving the correct ancestry will be greatly appreciated. Billie
