I am seeking information on: Abagail Colby (b. 1811 in NY) wife of Daniel
Colby (b. 1809 in Maine). I do not know her maiden name. Abagail was born
about 1811 in NY per an 1850 census of Jones County, Iowa, listing her as
45; and Daniel, aged 47. Daniel's parents were David and Sarah Farrington
Colby, of Maine. Children of Daniel and Abagail Colby were:
1. Diantha Colby, b. 1830 in Richford Hill, Tioga Co. NY - died 24 Dec 1881
in Polk Co. NE (md. Adoniram Fitch)
2. Jane Colby, b. 1834 in Richford HIll, Tioga Co., NY
3. Olive Colby, b. 1838, in Richford Hill, Tioga Co, NY - md. Manville
Tarbox
4. David Colby, b. 1841, in Richford HIll, Tioga Co., NY - md Ellen Jane
Cunningham on 27 Feb 1861
5. Albert Colby, b. 1846, in Richford Hill, Tioga Co, NY
6. George Colby, b. 1849, in Richford HIll, Tioga Co., NY - md Addie Stivers
31 Oct 1871
7. Edwin Colby, b. 1852, in Richford HIll, Tioga Co., NY - md Victoria
Streeter on 22 Sep 1869
On the Colby website Daniel is listed as born 16 Nov 1803 in Maine. A Jones
County, Iowa researcher gave me information listing Daniel buried in the
Pleasant Valley Cem in Jackson Twp., Jones, Iowa 19 April 1875 at aged 67 (&
5 mo. 3 days); this would give him a birth year of 1807 instead of 1803.
There is an Abagail Colby buried in the West Hills Church grounds in
Richford, Tioga Co., NY. This Abagail, however, is too old to have been my
Daniel's wife; the death is listed 28 Aug 1860 at age 77.
I would appreciate it if anyone could share information on Mrs. Abagail
Colby born in 1811 of NY. I do not have her maiden name or anything about
her parents. Abagail may have been born in Richford, Tioga Co., NY.

I already tried that one -- got it off the AOL white pages. It wasn't him,
but it was worth a call -- thanks, anyway.

I am trying to get in touch with the Logan Colby who was a graduate student
in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Alaska at
Fairbanks in 1998-1999. He shows up in a Google search, and I believe he may be a
descendant of my grandfather's brother, Logan Hall Colby (1910-1977). Logan
Hall Colby was living in Bremerton, Washington in the 1930s and 1940s, and he
died in San Bernardino County, California. I have no information on his
posterity.

Does anyone know where the Professor fits into the family?
Ron
BDSU, June 20, 1906 Obituaries
PROF. W. IRVING COLBY
The many friends of Prof. W. Irving COLBY will be shocked to learn of his
sudden death at the Flower Hospital, Manhattan, on June 5. Prof. COLBY had
been visiting in Providence, and while there did not enjoy the best of
health.
Desiring to consult a specialist he came to New York accompanied by his
son-in-law. Before reaching the city, Prof. COLBY's condition became so
serious that
on arriving at the Grand Central Station, an ambulance was summoned and he
was
taken to the hospital where he died a few hours later. The immediate cause
of
his death was acute indigestion. Prof. COLBY was well known in nearly all
the
large cities of this country as an instructor in the German language, which
he
began teaching in 1883. He was especially well known in Brooklyn, where he
had during the past twelve years taught many classes, his pupils numbering
over
two thousand. He was author of several German textbooks, among which were
"Der
Lehrer" and "Der Leitstern" Prof. COLBY was a member of Kismet Temple, Order
of the Mystic Shrine, Brooklyn, and of Central City Commandery, No. 25, K.
T.
of Syracuse. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. FD BEAGLE, of Albany, and
Mrs. Walter F. KINGSLEY, of Providence, R.I., and by three grandchildren.
The
interment took place at Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse, on June 8. W. Irving
COLBY
was a man of lovable nature, noble impulses and high aims, from boyhood he
could be thoroughly depended upon. He lived for his friends and his family.
He
had a kind word for every one and few men were as free from selfishness as
was
he. Always thoughtful of others, he delighted in doing kind deeds, and his
life was one delightful service. He had hosts of loyal friends who will
never
cease to mourn the sudden departure of the strong, gracious, noble spirit
that
lived and breathed in Will Irving COLBY.
Have another orphan Colby family.
Anyone know where they fit in.

The immigrant Anthony Colby (1605-1660/1661) was buried in the old Golgotha
Cemetery in Amesbury, Massachusetts. This was the original burying ground for
the first settlers of Amesbury. The cemetery no longer exists as such, and
there are no headstones. However, the site is maintained as a small park area,
and there is a large boulder with a memorial plaque affixed to it. The plaque
reads as follows:
MEMORIAL TO THE FIRST SETTLERS OF AMESBURY AND THEIR FIRST BURYING GROUND
The date 1654 is also inscribed on the plaque -- Amesbury was not officially
incorporated as a separate town until the late 1660s, but the unofficial, de
facto separation from Salisbury occurred in 1654.
The plaque lists eighteen original Amesbury settlers who are interred in the
vicinity, including Anthony Colby, his son John Colby, Anthony's son-in-law
Orlando Bagley, Anthony's neighbors William Sargent and Jarret Haddon, and
Thomas Macy (from whom Anthony bought the Macy-Colby house). The inclusion of Macy
is interesting, since he and his family were forced out of the colony and
went to live on Nantucket.
I have a very clear snapshot of the boulder and memorial plaque, taken when I
was in Amesbury two years ago.

I have been searching through early issues (1841 - 1902) of the Brooklyn
Eagle newspaper.
There is several mentions of a pro. golfer from Essex County Country Club
named
Howard A. Colby. Would like to know who he is.
Also there are several references to the "Colby Family" vaudeville act.
Anyone know who they are?
