Ron --
Bingo! There they are -- right where they are supposed to be! I gather that
in this instance, the misspelling is on the original census and is not due to
transcription error. Nonetheless, Mary Ellen's point about the high
incidence of mistakes in the extracted version of the 1880 census is well
taken.
So -- that accounts for George Moses Colby (and also lends credence to my
contention that his wife's name was Henrietta, not Harriet). Now -- I wonder
what crazy misspelling the other three brothers are hiding under!
Many thanks for all your help!

Many thanks to Ron, Alice, Bob, and all the other list members who have
responded to this query with helpful suggestions. It would appear that the
most probable cause for my inability to locate these people in the 1880
census is that the surnames are badly misspelled, either on the original or
in the extraction. That certainly is the case with George Moses Colby, whose
name was spelled COLLEY on the original census (see next message).

The 1880 census record for the family of William Wallace Colby (1818 -- 1913)
shows his five youngest surviving children still living at home in Lawrence,
Massachusetts. His four eldest surviving children, all born in Essex County,
were:
George Moses Colby (b. 26 Oct 1841)
William Rufus Colby (b. 10 Jul 1844)
Edward L. Colby (b. abt 1847)
Charles M. Colby (b. abt 1849)
By 1880, all four of them had established separate households. However, an
exhaustive search of the 1880 census fails to show them (or any of their
spouses or children) anywhere in the country. Where in the dickens are they?
George and Charles should have been in Essex County, Massachusetts, at the
time, and perhaps William as well. Edward died in California in 1887. Why
in the world are all four of these families apparently missing from the 1880
census?

Does anyone have information on ancestors of Ebenezer Colby, born near Concord, New Hampshire around 1830. He married Alice Matilda Goodale on 20 Nov 1890, who was born 30 Oct 1858, in Gardiner, Maine.
Ebenezer Colby had two brothers and one sister: Hiram, Harvey, and Sarah Elizabeth, also born in New Hampshire.
The three boys left the East Coast for California in about 1951, to join the Gold Rush.
They went via the Isthmus of Panama, where Harvey died of Yellow Fever.
Ebenezer ended up in Oakland, California and married late in life to Alice Goodale. They had one son (that I know of) my uncle, the George Wilbur Colby born 28 Aug 1891.
*He's not to be confused with Geroge Wilbur Colby born 29 Jul 1886, in Massachusetts.*
Hiram married "Unknown," and had Eugene Colby, who married another "Unknown" and had Edward Colby. We do know that Eugene and Edward were born in California. Edward, if he is still alive, would be quite old.
