Just sent you two emails with details about Dr. Houts' grandchildren. Thank you for your help. If you ever locate any data about Dr. Houts' medical training I would appreciate knowing. She must have been well know because the stain glass windows of the Oswegeo Methodist Church are in honor of her!

Transcribed from History of Labette County, Kansas and its Representative Citizens, ed. & comp. by Hon. Nelson Case. Pub. by Biographical Publishing Co., Chicago, Ill. 1901
THOMAS J. SHARP, a highly respected farmer residing in section 13, township 34, range 20, in Hackberry township, Labette county, Kansas, is one of the pioneer settlers of the county. He was born in Macoupin county, Illinois, in 1849, and is a son of Madison Sharp, whose sketch appears elsewhere in this volume.
Thomas J. Sharp was reared in Illinois, until he reached the age of seventeen years, when he moved to Hunt county, Texas. In 1868, he moved to Neosho county, Kansas, and one year later to Labette county, where he took up the southwest quarter of section 7, township 34, range 20. This he greatly improved, and still owns the farm. In 1892, Mr. Sharp removed to the farm of his mother-in-law in Hackberry township. Her property consists of a half section, and is finely improved. This farm had been purchased by her husband from Mr. Peck. Mr. Sharp prefers and raises Shorthorn cattle and Poland-China hogs. He is very well informed on all agricultural matters, and uses many modern implements in tilling the soil.
Mr. Sharp was married in Labette county, to Harriet Snow, a daughter of Henry and Mary J. (Colby) Snow. Mr. Snow located in Labette county in 1868, and took up a claim adjoining Mr. Sharp's. He died there in 1873. Mrs. Snow married Mr. Houts in 1885, and he died several years later. Mrs. Houts now lives in Oswego. Mr. Sharp's wife was born in Macoupin county, Illinois, in 1852. Mr. and Mrs. Sharp have been blessed with seven children, namely: Henry, who is a buttermaker in a creamery at Matfield, Kansas, and who married a daughter of D. M. Miller, and has two children, - Myrl and Gladys; Isaac M., who is a stenographer for a hardware and implement company at Shreveport, Louisiana, and was formerly with Funkhouser, of West Plains, Missouri; May, who is cashier in C. M. Condon's store at Oswego; Maude; Lula; Ettie; and Bessie.
In politics, Mr. Sharp is a Republican. He has served in township offices and on the school board, in District No. 7. He was formerly a member of the Anti-Horsethief Association. Religiously, he attends the Methodist church at Oswego. Mr. Sharp is always all active supporter of all public enterprises, and is a useful and irreproachable citizen. Portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Sharp, engraved from photographs taken in July, 1901, accompany this sketch, and may be found on a page in proximity to this.
Hello Norman,
I found the graves of her parents and family a couple of years ago and
photographed the headstones. Mary J. Colby is my 2nd cousin 4xs removed. I
am interested in the information that you have on Dr. Snow and her family.

Searching for the parents and birth place of Mary J. Colby, born in New Hampshire in 1828. She married in Macoupin Co Illinois to Henry Snow. They had a single child, Harriet. The family moved to Labette County Kansas in the 1870's.
Also would like to know about Dr. Snow's medical training. She was one of the earliest female Doctors in Labette County KS.
I am trying to find any information on Charles Gilbert Colby, my
great-grandfather. He was the son of Gilbert L. and Thursia (Theresa)
Wetherbee generally known as Jane. He had an older brother named Aurin
(Orren) Colby and a sister Adelaide. Charles was born in New Hampshire
about 1863. His father was a brick mason. In the 1880 census, the family
is living in Fitchburg, MA and by 1885, they are in Leavenworth, KS. In
1885 (from the state census), Charles was married Harriet Reynolds and they
had a daughter, Pearl - my grandmother, in December of that year. Harriet
died a week after Pearl was born and Charles disappeared. Pearl was reared
by her grandparents. To confuse the issue, I believe my grandmother had a
cousin named Pearl because there is a different one shown in the school
yearbooks. There is a possibility that Charles went to Iowa and maybe died
about 1918 in or near Fort Dodge. Does anyone have any clues? Thanks.
For inquiring minds and those who would like to know.
The 1880 US, 1881 British and 1881 Canada census are now online at
www.familysearch.org.

Today this was brought to my attention that
Capt. Thomas F. Ellsworth b. 12 Nov 1840, Ipswich, MA

He was in the Civil War, and captain in the 1st Regiment of colored soldiers
(Mass 55th); promoted to that office (from rank as private, for which
enlisted, Aug 4, 1862), in consideration of his saving the life of Col.
Hartwell, by carrying him off the field when wounded. He was awarded the
Medal of Honor for his Civil War heroism of rescuing his Colonel under fire.
He was finally awarded the Medal of Honor in 1895.
Capt. Ellsworth married 6 Mar 1861, Harriett T Colby b. 1 Nov 1841

Probably not too important, but.... When I recently found the Church of God Cemetery in Center Twp. (Butler Co., PA) I drove past the place where old Lyon's park was when I was younger. There used to be a shelter and a ball field as I remember. Seeing the place of that old park reminded me of a time that my Grandfather, Galen Albert, Sr. had me out golfing at Stoughton Acre's I believe, I think I was about 14 years old, any how, we had drove by that Lyon's Park and he had told me that it had been the place he had went to several times as a boy for family reunions, which meant nothing to me at the time, but now it makes sense as the family base (Andrew Albert's farm) was within a couple of miles. I just thought that was an interesting note.

Here is a family group sheet for John Colby and Abigail West
As you can see they had a daughter Susannah b. 14 OCT 1804, Corinth, VT,
which I have no other information
Susannah had a sister who went to Spring Creek, Warren County, Pennsylvania.
I wonder if Susannah followed her to Pennsylvania?

Elaine,
This is probably a long shot...
One of my ancestors that I don't know a lot about is Susannah Colby, born about 1804 in Vermont. Her father was John Colby, born about 1770 in Vermont or New Hampshire (NH according to information on the 1850 Census of Center Twp., Butler Co., PA, Susannah was shown born in VT on both 1850 & 1860 Census of same county). The 1850 census shows Susannah's name almost unreadable, but appears to me to be Shlanah, the children and ages all match up so, I am pretty sure they are the same. Susannah married Charles Thompson of Massachussets. I believe they both died in Butler Co., PA.
Your John Colby appears to be about the right age to be Susannah's father. Do you know if he had a daughter that may be close? If so let me know, this is one family that has eluded me for sometime.
Thanks,
Kurt Albert

American Memory is another source of digital images on line. There is also
an amazing collection of life histories told in the first person. It is easier to
find what you want by doing a search than scrolling through the collections
unless you are there simply to soak up the past.
