Do you know anything about the Anthony Cobly/Colby (I've seen it written both ways) who married Ruth Newell on 16 Mar 1837 in Calhoun County, IL? I'm trying to figure out if this is the same Ruth Newell who married Solomon Despain on 30 Jun 1842 in Calhoun County.
Thanks -

Just got back from a business trip to NI and England... No time for
genealogy, but did visit a bookstore or two (I am addicted to bookstores!)
Picked up a nice little booklet for my library on the subject of Coats of
Arms. Let's see if I can note a few relevant "bullets."
Source:
Andrew Stewart Jamieson, "Coats of Arms,"
Pitkin Press, Feb, 1999, cost 2 pounds 99 pence (about $4.50 US)
ISBN 0-85372-870-4.
Profusely illustrated in beautiful colors on glossy paper, 6-3/4"x9-1/2",
30 pages.
If you wish a copy, take the ISBN number to your local bookseller.
------its essence (The British version of Heraldry!)---
* from the dawn of civilization people have used symbols to explain their
beliefs and place in society.
* During Middle Ages, armour became sophisticated, and medieval warrior
found himself encased in iron from head to toe, including a slit helmet,
which rendered him anonymous.
* The battle field was a dangerous place where it was essential to know
both your friends and your enemies.
* Since the shield was the main frontal defense, one painted the "charge"
on it as a means of identification. Thus, one could identify all the
players on the battlefield. (also, average person couldn't read)
* The use of the charge was extended to use on the surcoat, a garment which
covered the armour and gave protection to its wearer from the elements. It
is from this garment that we get the term "Coat of Arms."
* Coats of arms could only be devised by official heralds, who were, at
first, just wandering minstrels, and later, people who held official
positions within a court or important household.
* Today, the heralds, or officers of arms, are members of Her Majesty's
Royal Household, and work from Her Majesty's College of Arms, founded by
King Richard III, who assign and grant coats of arms, and record heraldic
and genealogical records.
* An original "Grant of Arms" is an illumninated document on vellum which
assigns a coat of arms TO AN INDIVIDUAL AND HIS HEIRS.
A note of warning: there are companies that specialize in selling arms of
family names. These companies should be avoided at all costs--as the arms
they assign will be the first one they find for that family name.
Unless you can prove DIRECT DESCENT in the male line from the ORIGINAL
BEARER, you are not permitted by the Law of Arms to use any such arms.
-----------
Comment: personally, I can't see making a distinction between male and
female descendants--that is almost like the old family history books that
only followed male descendants!! However, there is more than one coat of
arms for many surnames including Colby; the issue of direct descent is
important in order to obtain the correct arms for a particular Colby.
Will: Do you know the correct CofA for Anthony?
cheers, and may you each find another ancestor today!

Looking for information regarding Robert and Elizabeth Colby. Elizabeth is
the daughter of John and Anne Murdy. Elizabeth's brother owned Murdy
funeral
home in Middlesex County. Ontario Canada.
just seen your request-- the first saying is the only one I've seen and means "Not All Broken" If you notice on the coat of arms-- at the top you have a helmet with an arm holding a sword that is broken BUT still together -which is the motto--
Not All Broken. Has to Colby colors for the coat of arms-- which do you have, because there are three.
