On page 292, Weis has this
Captain Isaac Newton Colby b. 28 FEB 1838 Newburyport, MA
It is said that he died at sea in 1876.
Looks like he was alive and well in 1880 and had a son born in 1878
Looks like Weis has another mistake in his book.

Hi Lara,
I don't know if she is or not, but it certainly seems possible. Her father came to Kenosha county so he may have had other children, that included your grandfather or gr-grandfather. Do you know anything about them and their parents?
There is a Smith mixed in this family somehow too it seems and it seems to not be a relative on the Burritt side so perhap it is on the Colby side

Searching for Cora Colby, Minnesota married to James Isaac Frampton of Missouri born est. 1864, disappeared as of 1890 census in Missouri
Recently I was searching in a microfilm entitled: "New Hampshire Town
Records, Pittsfield, NH, Volume 2," and found the following Colby entry--it
was the only one.
"1764, 13 January, Wife of Jacob Colby died."
does one meager datum help anyone?
Town Records of this period are often useful, as marriage records were not
always formalized. For example, I found a published family book on one
family that said a couple were m. 15 Nov. 1817, and first child b. 31 Jan
1819. Turns out if you check the Town Records, they were m. 15 July 1818.
Moral (which we all know): Family books are not always perfect.

Hi All
I have been looking at the Vital records from Brunswick, Maine and Gardiner,
Maine
and have come up with a interesting question
Listed in Gardiner, Maine Vital Records
Ebenezer Colby and Mehitable Cowan had the following children,
they had others but only interested in the first sequence of three or four.
Samson Colby b. 31 Mar 1803
William Hannibal Colby b. 7 Nov 1807
Lucretia Colby b. 9 Oct 1808
Listed in the Brunswick, Maine Vital Records
William H. Colby b. 7 Nov 1805
John Colby b. 9 Apr 1807
Lucretia Colby b. 9 Oct 1808
Questions are:
What is the correct date of birth for William H. Colby??
Has John been left out of the family accidentally??
>From Lewiston, Maine Vital Records.
John Colby m. 10 Apr 1837 Sophia Ann Nickerson
Lucretia Colby m 27 Nov 1838 Hiram Kendall
Another note: all of William H. and John Colby children were born in
Brunswick, Maine.
Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated.

Other possibility is Jeremiah Colby & Betsy Paull. Jeremiah is son of
Philbrick Colby & Susannah Bradley. Sophia Colby would have been born in
c.1811 to have been 39 in 1850, I think.
Any other takers? <G>

Rich,
There are many many connections to Susannah Martin through marriages of the other Martin children, cousins, and their descendants, etc. So many of the Amesbury people of course married neighbors that connections to Susannah come from other Amesbury family names. At one time, when I had time I did a lot of compiling of data on Susannah Martin and her history. My wife and visited Salem two years ago when we attended the Colby family reunion in Amesbury.
BTW. Bonnie, who subscribes to this list, has a wealth of information on Susannah in particular, but also all of the victims of the Salem witch hunts.

I don't think Susannah Martin was related by blood or marriage to the Colbys,
but here is more than you wanted to know about the connection. (It's
everything I know about Samuel, son of Anthony and Susannah).
---
In 1665, Samuel was fined for "abusing a wench," in Amesbury. Samuel
apparently resided in Haverhill from 1666-76, then returned to Amesbury by
1677. In 1676, Samuel fought in the "Falls Fight" of King Philip's War, in
the Company of Captain William Turner, and was said to have helped to bury
Captain Turner. In 1735 John Chase of Newbury applied for a pension based on
his service, certifying that he was in the expedition with Capt. Turner, and
he and Samuel Coleby, late of Almsbury, deceased, helped to bury him. In
1741, Samuel's eldest son Samuel was given a choice of lots in a new tract of
land, in recognition of his father's service.
Samuel owned a public house in Amesbury in 1678. In 1686 he was acquitted of
a charge of selling drink without a license. He became a general court
representative in 1689, and a senator after 1692. On July 22, 1692, he
signed a petition in support of Mary Perkins Bradbury when she was accused of
witchcraft. Mrs. Bradbury was Elizabeth Colby’s aunt, Elizabeth Perkins
Sargent's sister, who married Thomas Bradbury. Samuel also testified on
behalf of Susannah Martin, the only executed witch from north of the Merrimac
River.
The book The Salem Witch Crisis by Larry Gragg (NY: Praeger 1992) has this to
say about Mary Bradbury and Susannah Martin:
Mary Bradbury seemed to be one of the most unlikely suspects. Her Salisbury
minister, James Allen, testified, "She hathh lived according to the rules of
the gospel, amongst us, was a constant attender upon the ministry of the
word, & all the ordinances of the gospel." Allen recalled her "works of
charity & mercy to the sick & poor." In all, he remembered nothing Bradbury
had done "unbecoming the profession of the gospel." Salisbury magistrate
Robert Pike confirmed the testimony of minister Allen, as did Bradbury’s
husband, Thomas. Rather than a nefarious threat to her neighbors, Thomas
Bradbury described his wife of fifty-five years as "aged & weak & grieved."
She had raised eleven children and four grandchildren and through it all had
been "wonderful laborious diligent & industrious." He characterized his wife
as a "prudent, & provident" woman with "a cheerful spirit, liberal,
charitable."
Mary Bradbury revealed to the magistrates the traits that caused family and
friends to rally to her cause when she submitted to them her response to the
charges made against her. She wrote: "I am wholly innocent of any such
wickedness through the goodness of God that have kept me hitherto. I am the
servant of Jesus Christ & have given myself up to Him as my only Lord &
Savior and to the diligent attendance upon Him in all His holy ordinances, in
utter contempt & defiance of the Devil, and all his works as horrid &
detestable. And accordingly have endeavored to frame my life; & conversation
according to the rules of His holy work, & in that faith & practice resolve
by the help and assistance of God to continue to my life’s end.
"For the truth of what I say as to matter of practice I humbly refer myself,
to my brethren & neighbors that know me and unto the searcher of all hearts
for the truth & uprightness of my heart therein." (pp 110-111)
Mary was convicted of witchcraft and imprisoned. Friends helped Mary escape
from prison after Salisbury magistrate Robert Pike joined dozens of neighbors
in petitioning the Court of Oyer and Terminer on her behalf. (p 168) In
October 1710 the General Court voted that the conviction and attainders of
... Mary Bradbury ... {and others} be reversed. Apparently, no one stepped
forward as an advocate for ... Susannah Martin ... {and 6 others} because
their convictions and attainders have never been reversed. (p 190) [Before
1692] Susannah Martin appeared in court on charges of assaulting her husband.
Susannah’s disputes spread beyond her nuclear family as she fought relations
in court for three years over the disposition of her father’s estate. She
was also hauled into court for calling a neighbor a liar and a thief. Her
contentious demeanor clearly contributed to her neighbors’ acceptance of
charges of witchcraft against her in the 1660s. William Sargeant [Samuel
Colby’s father-in-law] talked openly about Susannah being a witch and killing
an infant that she had given birth to while still single. Thomas Sargeant
added to the rumors saying that her son George "was a bastard and that
Richard Martin was Goodwife Martin’s imp." Although Susannah Martin suffered
no legal penalties in 1669, her reputation as a witch had been firmly
established. ...[S]he appears from the limited record of her life before
1692 as a tough, vengeful woman who may have used her repute as a witch to
intimidate neighbors. Martin displayed contempt for the May 2 proceedings
and ridicule for the afflicted. (pp 103-105)
