As you know, I am looking for a Colby male born about 1847 in NH or VT, who
in his adult years went by Alva Joshua Colby. When he joined the US Army in
1868 he said this was his third enlistment. In 1890, when he had a medical
exam, he tried to claim a disability pension(epilepsy), stating that he
joined the Massachusetts Volunteers, 26th Infantry, in Boston on April 15,
1861 at the call of Pres. Lincoln, entered as Prv., discharged in Oct 1864
as Sergt. Turns out the 26th did not form until Oct '61, out of remnants
of the old 6th, and other regiments. Turns out *none* joined in Boston, but
rather in Lowell, other Mass cities, VT and NH; they all took trains to
Boston--historians have disagreements as to which regiments actually
arrived in Boston first on that morning--where they were formally welcomed.

I have always wondered about this name listed in the Essex County vital
records.
Lorentz Spitzenfiel Colby b. 31 July 1812 s/o John Colby and Dolly Bagley.
John also had a son Edwin John Colby b. 31 Jul 1812 listed in the vital
records.
Leaving you to believe Lorentz and Edwin may have been twins.
Looks like Lorentz and Edwin are one in the same.
Thanks Marilyn in Montreal for bringing this to my attention.

Last week I spent two days in the Archives in DC, and went looking in
particular, for one gentleman.. Guess what I wrote the data down wrong, and
looked for a short time, in vain, for the wrong person! today they have a
nice polite name for stupidity--senior moments.
I was really looking for Daniel P. Colby, wife Electa presumably still in
Vermont in 1860. Wanted to see data on his son, who was 3 in the 1850
census, but whose name was not completely readable (Albino? Colby in 1850)
Does anyone have access to the VT 1860 census? It would be Daniel P.

Hi all,
I would like some information on Timothy Colby, parents Benjamin Colby
and Abigail Eaton. Timothy was born Feb. 16, 1807 in Springfield,
Sullivan Co., New Hampshire and was buried in Petersburg, Menard Co.
Illinois in July 1849. There is also a stone marked J. S. Colby infants.
Does anyone know if he had a family?
Could the infants be his grandchildren?
He was a cousin of my gg grandfather Jonathan N Colby.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I saw a reference made to a book written by Solon Colby titled "Colby's

Thanks!

Hello, what I know is sketchy but here it goes....
John Colby--- born in Canada or Michigan and died 1919 or 1920 in Michigan,
probably 1920.
His wife Hennrietta (Volz) Colby.
John and Hennrietta were married in Michigan--Saginaw.
Together they had 8 children the youngest, my grandmother was born in 1919.
The children's names are
John, Margaret--married name Sawyer, Mamie Eva, Hennrietta, George, Fred,
Katherine, and Jennie-- married name Thompson.
This all started when my mother tried to find out her mothers middle name.
On her birth certificate it just says "R" for her middle name. Well, as you
know one thing lead to another, and I started searching for my mothers
grandparents and that is how I found your web site. I did find a John Colby
on the Ontario census of 1871 who was 13 years old. I don't know if that is
him, he is lists as a stray, and no other information about him, or his
parents. I know there are a ton of John Colby's listed and so any
information would be of great help.
Thank you

Hello Sharon,
Thanks for the e-mail.
My wife and I did visit Henniker this past August after we attended the
Colby reunion in Amesbury. However, I am not the Robert that went to the
Henniker Hist. Soc. The building was not open when we visited there as it
was on a Sunday.

Hi...
Looking for information on my great-great-grandmother. My great
grandfather's name was Frank Russel Palmer. He was born in March 1877 in Jay,
Essex County, New York. Frank's parents are listed on his marriage
certificate as Daniel Palmer and Ella Colby, of Jay New York. We had assumed
that this Ella was the daughter of Blanchard C. Colby, Jr. and Betsey
Floyd(s), since she was born in Jay and was about the same age as Daniel.
However, we had found a distant cousin whose mother is still living, and is a
granddaughter of Daniel and Ella. They referred to Ella as Eleanor, and
seemed to recall that Eleanor's father was John (they also referred to her as
our *Indian* grandmother Colby..but that's another mystery in itself).. We
still believed that Ella, daughter of Blanchard, was our ancestor. Daniel
and Ella moved to Clinton County. We came across the 1880 census, and found
Daniel and Ella.. and living with them was an Amelia Colby, age 25. We
looked up the Amelia Colby's on the Colby website, and found a family of John
Colby and wife Syrena White, who also lived in Jay, and had daughters Eleanor
and Amelia. Eleanor and Ella (daughter of Blanchard) were born about the
same time. We are now wondering if Eleanor is our ancestor, and that Ella
was a nickname she went by..
Does anyone out there have any more info on the families of Blanchard & John?
Any help shedding the light on which of these women is our
great-great-grandmother would be appreciated.
Thanks!
