Hi Jan;
The name of the restaurant was CHEERS, just as in the name of the
show. There was talk about closing it down, and I haven't heard the
outcome.

Subject: Colby History
Mr. Colby,
I was wondering if you could help me. I am trying my best, without a
terrible amount of luck, to find my mothers ancestors. Her maiden name was
Linda K. Colby and her father was Charles Oliver Colby of Minnesota
(oritinally). Anyway, her father told her that he was the 6th generation of
"Charles" Colby's. However, other than his father, Charles Le Roy Colby, who
was born in Minneapolis Mn, we have very little. I know HIS father's name
was Charles Lucius Colby and HOPING is the Charles Lucius Colby of
Springfield New Hampshire b 1859. His father is listed as Charles Madison
Colby of the same location, and his mother Lucy A Collins on the LDS site.
However, I see a Charles Madison Colby with the same birth date on your site
and it shows no wife. Is this the same? I'd appreciate ANY help you can
offer...as I am at SUCH a brick wall with this. Though Charles Lucius was
married to a Mary Victoria Prescott...I can find nothing about her either.
Thanks for your time.
Bill Polk

Claremont Aug 20 1847
Dear Horace,
After so long a time I am able to write you a few lines to inform you how we
are. I and your Mother are both sick. Your Mother is very low. We have
not expected her to live from one day to another for a week past. Six weeks
ago she fell down on the floor and broke the (neck) of her thigh bone and
has been entirely helpless ever since. For the last week she has had the
bilious diarrhea. Last Tuesday we though she would not live 24 hours. We
sent for Harlow and he came to see her. Stayed two days. She is more
comfortable and the diarrhea had abated some but she is still in a helpless
condition. My pain is still horrible beyond description. Every night I get
but little sleep. I have had 3 operations performed of injecting into my
back and now have a (seaton) in my back. (Morphine) it has given me a slight
relief. I am doubtful whether your Mother ever gets about again. She may
continue a long time in this condition.
Henry has got all his hay and grain into the barns. A middling crop. Corn
good. Potatoes look promising. I want hear from you at home and the boys in
the army. I want you to write how much wheat you sowed this year and about
your other crops. We have sold our wool for $100 per pound. I suppose your
wheat will sell for over 200 per bushel. Flour is worth here $15 per lb.
Corn is selling here for 200 bush. Potatoes 150 cash.
Write soon -
Yours truly

Beloved Friends
I seize this opportunity to write to you. We are now enjoying usual health
but we have had sickness and death in our families. Dear little Fanny is
dead. She died August 27th. She had the (Eresiplies) for about 2 weeks but
kept up running about the house pretty bright until 4 days of her death.
When the dysentery set in after which she lingered in great distress but 4
days. I miss her great. I set a great deal by her. She was the most
interesting and bright child I even saw. She could talk plain and pretty
and so pleasant and so understandingly that I have had my fear for months
that she was not destined long to remain in this world of sin and sorrow but
that God would early take her to his blest abode on high. and thus it has
been.
Thankful was sick with the dysentery all the time the child was sick & for
a week after and Rhoda also was sick with the same complaint. Mary Ann
being at made it very hard for you mother to take care of all them and do
the work but she stood it remarkably well. Joshua was very sick at Lowell
with the same disease. Got better so he could ride home and came a week
before Fanny was taken . The Doctor at Lowell though it was the Colery but
is milder & different in its symptoms from the Asiatic Collery. But it has
proven very mortal in Lowell. Seventy have died in week. 7 dead body was
carried out of the block where Joshua boarded in one day. Your uncle Jerry
has buried a son which died with it. It has been the most sickly in
Claremont Village that ever was known for about 2 months. It is becoming
more healthier. We have about an average crop of most kinds produce. Hay N
ot yielding over 21/2 bush to acre. Ours was tolerable good had 89 bushels
from 10 bush sowing. Corn not so good as last year but an average crop.
Potatoes almost ruined by the rot. As bad as they were that fall you left
N.H. Fruit scarce but we have enough for our own use. Corn worth 75. cts.
Wheat 1.50. Oats 37 1/2. Flour 7.50. Butter & cheese sell well. Cheese
8 cts. Butter, 20. Eggs 12. We have sold 1200 lbs cheese and about as
much more to sell. We expect to make over 300 lbs butter this fall have 12
cows & heifers. We have five old hogs and 8 pigs & have begun to fatten the
old ones. They cook nicely.
I reckon that your Michigan locoes are beginning to sick enough of their
disgraceful and ruinous war with Mexico. I t is a disgrace to our country.
Is as bad piracy and I fear will bring down and justly to the heaviest
judgments of God upon our country for wicked designs and acts to conquer
territory to perpetuate slavery. It is enough to make ones blood chill.
Hear of the legal murder of thousands of our fellow men women and children
to accomplish this Hellish purpose of bringing the whole of United States
& Territory and Mexico too under the slave (parves). But may God grant that
spirit of philanthropy and liberty be awakened in every breast so that J. K.
Polk may be (succeeded) by a man worthy to preside over virtuous people.
Ira Colby & Fred (at) Henry have left the Polk ranks. Every decent man are
disgusted at the conduct of our Government.
I talked of coming out to visit this fall but I could not. Have so much
work to do there is no way that I could. Hire help is scarce and high in
consequence of so many railroads a building. Write to me how you all do &
how you are getting along & how far is the Capital of the State located from
you and how near does the central railroad come to you. You wrote that it
was located to New Buffilow but I did not know where nor how near it was to
you. I had a letter from Hubbard about 2 weeks ago. They were well but it
was very sickly there and many had died. I don't think of anything more.
Yours J.C.
Horace Colby Joshua Colby
Beloved Brother
I take my pen to write a few words to you. you will learn by reading above
that we called to part with our little Fanny Jane. she was taken with
dysentery a Sunday night and died Friday morning. Monday morning I sent for
the Doctor and Tuesday she had a fit and the disease went to her head and
the Doctor said she must die. It was very hard to part with her. She was a
promising and lovely child but alas she has gone and we cannot see any more
in this world. I ought to wrote to you before but have had no time as we
have been very much hurried. Please write to me.
Henry Colby
Mother sends her love to you all and Thankful and Rhoda send love to you &
Ruth and the children. Tell Mother Barker Mother send her respects to her
and should like to set down and have a good smoke with her. I intend to
write to you before long. Please excuse my brevity in the letter for I have
but little room. Grandmother Barker is as well as usual.
Yours with respect
H. Colby (the same hand as Henry Colby above)

Subject: Another Colby
Dear Mr. Colby,
I have started to amass some information on my own family tree. I am the
last Colby in my line, and to date have very little information about my
this
line. I noticed that you had several Valentine Colby's in your list. I was
told by my 86 year old aunt, Aline Wesley Colby Minnich, that my
grandfather's, father's first name was Valentine. He was married to a woman
by the name of Margaret (Pettibone, not sure of spelling), and they had
three
children: Calvin Leslie Colby (my grandfather, b. 1893, d. 1943), Martha
Colby, and Gerald Colby. Do you have information on this line of Colby's?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,

Hi all,
I would like to know if the well Orlando Bagley dug, the subject of
Whittiers poem,
The Captains Well, still exists or is the location marked.
Also, my gggrandfather ,Jonathan Colby, was born in Hopkington, N.Y. The
house was located on Beech Hill. I have two sources, one says N.Y. and
the other says N.H.
If any one can help me with this I will be very grateful. I think this
house still exists, but I am not sure.
Many Thanks,

Hi Sandy and all
Thomas Colby and Lydia Webster didn't have a son James that I'm aware of.
Not able to help you with this James s/o Thomas.
A note about Lydia Webster.
Several of us have Lydia as b. 28 Aug 1764 and the daughter of Daniel
Webster and Bridget Holdridge
This date of birth fits with the date and age given in her deposition for
Rev. War pension
Been doing some checking on Lydia Webster d/o Daniel and Bridget
Daniel and Bridget's daughter Lydia was b. 27 Aug 1771 Lebanon, New London,
Connecticut
Looks like Daniel Webster and Bridget Holdridge can't be the parents of our

:I found this message on the Ancestry.Com message board and wondered if
this Thomas Colby from Danville, VT was the father of James Colby who
moved to Ashtabula County around 1840. Also is this the same Thomas
Colby who married Lydia Webster?
Any help appreciated.

Sam, Don and all
Have been putting the 1850 New Hampshire census information in my files.
The census info and the book "A Genealogy of the Descendants of Abraham
Colby and Elizabeth Blaisdell, his wife Who settled in Bow in 1768" has a
conflict of information.
James Green and Judith Colby family.
In particular for their son Simeon Green and wife Sarah Hadley
Simeon and family were living with James and Judith at the time of the 1850
census.
The book shows the following children for Simeon and Sarah.
Mary W. b. Feb 22 1844
Clarinda J. C. b. Apr 9 1846
James b. Sep 6 1848
8 other children born after the 1850 census
1850 census shows the following children:
Mary W. Female age 7
Asenath Female age 5
James Male age 2
so why the discrepancy with the two children's names??
Why isn't Clarinda listed in the census??
are Clarinda and Asenath one in the same???
Do we have twins, one died young???
Is Asenath a child that was missed and left out of the book??
Did the parents change Asenath's name after the census??
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
