This is what I was trying to send:
>From Wash. Gen. Web.
Everett is a city on Port Gardner Bay at the mouth of the Snohomish River thirty miles north of Seattle in west central Snohomish County. Supported by many forest products industries, it was named for Everett Colby of New Jersey, son Charles L. Colby, who invested in the Everett Land Company in 1890. Mr. Colby established several of the town's first industries and was a member of the syndicate which built the Everett and Monte Cristo Railroad."

Sorry about the last posts not coming through. I'll try to cut and paste
some more later so that it will make some sense! Apparently they do that to

This is as close as I can fit her in.

FAMILY NOTES
HUSBAND NOTES: Gardner COLBY
General: Gardner Colby 1810 - 1879, Railroad developer, Philanthropist
founder of Colby
University was born in Bowdoinham, Maine on Sept 3, 1810. His Father, a
wealthy
merchant of Maine, lost his fortune in consequence of the second war with
England and dying soon after, left his infant children to the care of their
mother.
She removed to Charleston, Mass., where, through hard work and thrift, she
was
able to rear the children. Gardner received a good common school education
and
began his buisness life by a year's employment as a clerk in a grocery
store.
Then he entered the dry goods buisness, opening a store of his own in Boston
when he was 20 years old. Later he embarked extensively in the manufacture
of
woolens when he laid the foundation of his great wealth (one article said he
was
reputed to be worth over $2,000,000). During the Civil War, he was one of
the
largest contractors to supply clothing to the Federal Army.
At one time, he was largely interested in navigation, engaging extensively
in
the Chinese trade. He also made profitable investments in real estate
especially at South Cove near Boston. Later, he made large investments in
railroads. In 1870, he was elected president of Wisconsin Central R.R.. He
became one of the most extensive railroad developers and executives in the
North
West.
A devout Baptist, Gardner gave a great deal of money to Brown University
and
from 1855 untill his death, he was annually chosen a trustee. He was also
treasurer of Newton Theological Institute at Newton, Mass. In another book
it
states that he gave a building known as Colby Hall.
In 1864 the trustee's of Waterville College, Maine, realizing the great
difficulty of continuing work with meager funds which had so long
handicapped
the institution, appealed to Mr. Colby for assistance. He responded at once
and
making a visit to Waterville to ascertain the real condition of affairs. He
unhesitatingly pledged $50,000, subject only to the subscription of an
additional $100,000 by other friends of the college. This act of his was
its
real salvation and by unanimous consent the name was changes to Colby
University.
Mr. Colby's business life was passed in Boston. Of his two sons, Charles
Lewis Colby succeeded him in the management of his railroad interests, and
Rev.
Henry Francis Colby, a noted Baptist preacher, continued his activities in
the
cause of religion and humanity. Mr. Colby died at his home in Newton Centre
on
April 2, 1879.

Colby College
Chartered in 1813 when Maine was still part of Massachusetts, and
originally called the Maine Literary and Theological Institution, Colby is
one
of the oldest colleges in New England. After Maine separated from
Massachusetts,
the new legislature conferred upon the school the right to grant degrees,
and in
1821 the institution was renamed Waterville College.
The turmoil of the Civil War severely tested the resources of the
College
as many students left the all-male campus and the school appeared on the
verge
of closing. At that point Gardiner Colby, a well-to-do Boston merchant and
Maine
native, stepped in to provide the funding necessary to avert tragedy. The
grateful Board of Trustees thanked him for the gift by renaming the school
after
him.
A few years later another landmark event occurred at the school. Mary
Low,
who matriculated in 1871, became the Colleges first female student, and
Colby
gained the distinction of being the first all-male New England college to
become
coeducational.
Following World War I, Colby found itself crowded between the Kennebec
River and the repair yards of the Maine Central Railroad in downtown
Waterville.
Ten buildings stood on a scant 30 acres, with six other buildings scattered
across the downtown area. The trustees voted to move the College to a new
site.
President Franklin W. Johnson led the effort, and the campaign eventually
proved
successful, overcoming such major setbacks as the Depression and World War
II.
In 1952 Colby completed the move to the new site, Mayflower Hill, on land
that
had been made available to the College by the citizens of Waterville.

COLBY, Gardner, philanthropist, was born in Bowdoinham, Maine, Sept. 3,
1810;
son of Josiah C. and Sarah (Davidson) Colby. His father died poor when
Gardner
was quite young, and his mother, to meet the wants of her children, removed
to
Charlestown, Mass. Gardner secured a fair education and engaged in
mercantile
pursuits in Boston in 1830. He was interested in various enterprises,
including
the china trade, real estate and manufacturing woolen goods. He gained a
large
fortune, principally through the sale of woolens during the civil war, and
through the rapid rise in Boston "South Cove" lands. He was elected in 1870
president of the Wisconsin central railroad and built a line of 340 miles of
railway, penetrating the forests of the state. During his lifetime, even
when a
clerk, he was [p.308] a systematic contributor from his earnings to
philanthropic causes. Brown university, the Baptist missionary union,
Waterville
college and Newton theological institution were his most conspicuous
beneficiaries, and Waterville college became Colby university in
acknowledgment
of his princely gifts at a time of desperate need. He was treasurer of
Newton
theological institution, 1844-68; president of the board of trustees,
1870-79; a
trustee, 1843-79; and trustee of Colby university, 1865-79. His son, Henry
Francis Colby, born in 1842, was graduated from Brown in 1862, became a
Baptist
clergyman, and was elected president of the board of trustees of Denison
university in 1890. Gardner Colby died in Newton Centre, Mass., April 2,
1879.

CHARLES LEWIS COLBY, banker, at native of Roxbury, Mass., now part of
Boston,
was born May 22, 1839. He is a son of Gardner Colby, and descends from
English
ancestry. Graduating from Brown University in 1858, with the degree of B.A.,
he
found his first occupation in the shipping house of Page, Richardson & Co.
In
1861, he made his home in New York city, and organized the shipping firm of
Dunbar & Colby, of which, in 1864, on the death of the senior partner, he
became
sole proprietor. In 1870, at the request of his father, he interested
himself in
the construction of The Wisconsin Central Railroad, and finally abandoned
business in New York to devote himself entirely to railroad and mining
interests
in the West. This resulted, in 1874, in removal to Milwaukee, where he
became an
active citizen, interested in many useful and public enterprises. Gardner
Colby,
president of The Wisconsin Central Railroad, being obliged by reason of ill
health to resign his position before the line was completed, Charles
succeeded
him in the presidency, finished the railroad, and assumed a leading part in
building up the railroad system of Northern and Central Wisconsin. He was
president and treasurer of The Wisconsin Central Railroad, The Milwaukee &
Lake
Winnebago, The Wisconsin & Minnesota, The Chippewa Fails & Western, The
Minnesota, St. Croix & Western, The Penokee, The Chicago, Wisconsin &
Minnesota,
and The Chicago Great Western Railroads. He was also the first to develop
the
iron regions of northwestern Michigan. The Colby mine, the first one opened,
belonged to The Penokee & Gogebic Development Co., of which Mr. Colby was
president and treasurer. He afterward became president of The Consolidated
Mines
and The Aurora Iron Mining Co. Greatly occupied with all these interests,
Mr.
Colby, nevertheless, found time for charitable religious and educational
work.
He contributed the larger portion of the funds required for the construction
of
two churches in Milwaukee, was next to one of the largest contributors of
the Y.
M. C. A. building, and gave the Babies' Home the land on which their
building
stands, besides being a regular contributor to, and efficient friend of,
most of
the charitable institutions of that society. The Wayland University at
Beaver
Dam received a large gift from his generous hand. In politics, Mr. Colby is
a
staunch Republican, and his speeches during the Garfield and Blaine
campaigns
met with an enthusiastic reception. He was a member of the Wisconsin
Legislature
in 1876, and was sought for other higher political positions, which,
however, he
declined on the ground that duty to his associates in business would not
permit
him to forsake them. Mr. Colby returned to New York in 1890, and has since
been
senior partner of the firm of Colby & Hoyt, in Wall street. He is a member
of
the Union League, Metropolitan, Lawyers', Down Town, University, and Brown
University clubs, and the Alpha Delta Phi, The Sons of the Revolution, and
The
New England Society; and a honorary member of The American Society of Civil
Engineers. Since graduation, the honorary degree of A.M. has been bestowed
upon
him, as well as an election as honorary member of I. B. K. He has for
several
years been president of the Brown University club, and is also a Fellow of
that
University. He has also served at different times as president of the
international convention of the Y. M. C. A., vice-president of The American
Baptist Foreign Mission Society, trustee of the Y. M. C. A. of New York
city,
and president of The New York Baptist Mission Society. Mr. Colby is a
director
of The Mercantile National Bank, and The Farmers' Loan & Trust Co.

spent in Newton, mass. He graduated from Brown University, Providence,
R.I., in
1862. After studying law for some months and spending nearly a year in
Europe,
he took a full course of study in the Newton Theological Institution, from
which
he graduated in 1867. In the fall of the same year, he came to Datyon,
Ohio,
and was ordained to the ministry and became pastor of the First Baptist

Everett
city, seat of Snohomish county, northwestern Washington, U.S., on Puget
Sound, at the mouth of the Snohomish River, across from Whidbey Island
(west), 28 miles (45 km) north of Seattle. Settled in 1862 and laid out in
1890, it became the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railway in
1893. Named for the son of C.L. Colby (an investor in the Everett Land
Company), it attracted eastern capital and was promoted as a manufacturing
centre. Development faltered, but the city exploited local timber and
agricultural resources.
Its landlocked harbour (Port Gardner) has been developed as a cargo and
commercial fishing port. A large Boeing aircraft assembly plant is
immediately south. Everett Community College was founded in 1941. Mount
Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest is to the east. Inc. 1893. Pop. (1992 est.)

My best guess for C. L. Colby, would be Charles Lewis Colby s/o Gardner
Colby >>
Good guess. My Illustrated Dictionary of Place Names says:
Everett, Wash (co. set of Snohomish Co.) For Everett Colby, son of Charles
Colby, a landowner and promoter of the area.
So while I was at it:
Colby, Kan. (co. seat of Thomas Co.) For J. R. Colby, erly settler and
postmaster.

The Colby's, listed above, were siblings of my grandmother ( Lucia Alice
Colby), and migrated to Wyoming from
Illinois, with Elmer Eugene Prescott, husband of Lucia Alice. They all
purchased land adjoining that of my
grandparents. The land was located near Guernsey, Wyoming.
I also have a list of the land records for Colby's from Campbell and
Weston Counties in Wyoming; as well as
for Colorado. If anyone is interested I will pass the information
along.
Would any Colby's from Colorado or Wyoming please contact me. I
remember visiting some of the family in the
early 50's; but am very unsure of the area. Some of the family were
sheep ranchers and another member owned
a tire shop, I believe his nickname was Buddy. Would have been my
father's (William Henry Prescott) cousin.

If I read your information correctly, you have two Daniel Colby b. 16 Nov
1780
One with the mother Sarah Trussell and the other with mother Elizabeth
Gilman.
I question the second wife. Because of the following statement by Weis
(Which may not be entirely correct)
Daniel Colby signed the Association Test, 1776, South Hampton, NH. We
suppose him to be the Daniel Colby whose widow applied for a pension. On 5
August 1839, Sarah Colby of Enfield, New Hampshire, aged 87 years last
September, deposed: that she was the widow of Daniel Colby who enlisted
from Plaistow, New Hampshire, for on year 1775-1776, under Captain Philip
Tilton and served for a whole year; that she had several children and had
endured many hardships; that her husband died 10 November 1815, and had
married her in Plaistow, New Hampshire, 1 October 1769.
Jonathan Kimball of Lisbon, New Hampshire, aged 75 years, deposed: that he
and Daniel Colby of Plaistow, New Hampshire, had enlisted in Captain Philip
Tilton's company, of East Kingston, New Hampshire, under Benjamin Kimball,
of Plaistow, 1st Lieutenant, Joseph Hountoon, 2nd Lieutenant, and Robert
Pike Ensign; that they went to Winter Hill, Massachusetts, Providence, Rhode
Island, New London, Connecticut, New York, Albany, New York, Lake George, to
St. Johns' in Canada, the to Mount Independence, where they served out their
year; that Daniel Colby lived in Plaistow, half a mile from the Hampstead
town line, that he settled in Enfield, New Hampshire, about 1789, and that
Daniel Colby had had the small pox in the army in 1776. The pension was
granted and the widow Sarah removed to Waterbury, Vermont, 20 January 1841,
to live with her son, Daniel Colby, of Waterbury, Vermont.
Here is the widow's pension application number as found in the National
Genealogical Society Quarterly
Daniel, NH Sarah, W18956
Where do we get copies of these applications????

Anyone know who this is and where he fits in??
COLBY, Charles Galusha, editor, was born in Rochester, N.Y., in 1830. He was
graduated at Wesleyan university in 1848. He gave special attention to the
study of astronomy and geography, and was associated with Prof. William
Cranch Bond of Harvard. At the college observatory he calculated the
eclipses of July, 1851, and while at the observatory contributed an article
to the New York Independent on telescopes. The results of his calculations
of the July eclipses were published in Harper's Magazine. In 1852-53 he
assisted in the preparation of "Fisher's Statistical Gazetteer of the United
States," of the "American Statistical Annual" (1853), and in editing Hunt's
Merchants' Magazine, continuing with the latter publication for some years.
He removed to Boston in 1861 and was an editor of the Commercial Bulletin
until 1864, when he returned to New York city. He did the descriptive and
statistical work in Morse's Geography of the World and in his Diamond Atlas.
He died in New York city, Oct. 30, 1866.

Wilson,
I believe that Hiram and Amos Colby were not the children of William Tyler
and Sally (Payne) Colby. Instead I believe they are the children of William
and Sally (Carter) Colby who were married 9 April 1814 in Amesbury.
Since Hiram was born 22 Oct 1814 and Amos was born 15 Dec 1816 [Amesbury VR]
both of these are probably sons of William and Sally (Carter).
I show William husband of Sally (Carter) as the son of Joshua and Molly
(Williams) Colby based on DAR ID number 126821, which I think Ron supplied.
There were a few William Colby's in Amesbury around this time and it is
confusing as to who belongs to whom.
