Subject: Horbling and Roos Hall
At the last Colby Reunion in Rhode Island, Ed Colby of Hingham, MA told
me about Roos Hall, built by the Colbys in Suffolk County, England.
My husband and I will be visiting England in two weeks for the wedding of
our son, Jonathan Colby Browne and would like to visit Roos Hall and any
other Colby sites in Suffolk and Lincolnshire.
Any information about the location of Roos Hall or other Colby sites
would be most welcome. Please contact Sandra Colby Browne at
<SBrowne1(a)juno.com>.
Many thanks!
Hi all.
Thought I would forward this.
I know there are some Colby/Ring connections and saw the Colby given name.
Maybe someone can help Mike.

Hi All;
Returned to Phoenix on Monday (Sure glad to return to the nice heat!!)
Thursday when I left Phoenix at 6 a.m., the temp was 92 degrees (21%
humidity). Saturday a.m. in East Greenwich, it was 51 degrees (I had
the car heater on!!).
Friday evening at the hostess's home, there was about 20 people at the
gathering. By the way, Barbara's father came from Albuquerque, N.M. to
attend the reunion. He told me he had given a genealogy lecture on
the local radio station.
At the reunion itself, there were about 100 persons attending (I
didn't count) We had people from far west Canada as the member that
came the fartherest. The oldest attendee was 82 years young, and the
youngest just happened to be the hostess, Barbarba.
Barbara gave a very interesting report about Rhode Island and it's
history.
Next year (the 47th consecutive) reunion will be held in Amesbury and
centered at the Colby-Macy house.
I returned to Phoenix Monday and I think I've recovered.
I wish to thank Barbara for hosting this years reunion.
Will in Phoenix, back in Heaven (going to 105 today!!!!)
(and I love it) #{:-D

Can anyone get copies? Or give me an idea how to get such?

RE: above
I haev also contacted a local librarian in such cases, as the newspaper
microfilms are often in a library. They will do this in most cases for a
small nominal charge. BTW, Denver has a fine genealogical library--been
there-- they would have lots of newspapers on microfilm
john ohanlon in tucson
Alice,
I have had some success whenever I want some local information from another
state. What I do is go to Gen Web for that State. For example go to the
Denver Gen Web , then the county page for Denver. Usually there are
resources listed there, especially "look-up" volunteers. You might also
get someone from the state historical library to do a look-up too, if they
have the newspaper microfilmed.
Also put an inquiry on that gen-web page query list.
I also, subscribe to the local Roots list for the area that I'm searching.
I am sure there is a list for Denver and area. Then I put an inquiry on
the mail list. Sometimes that works.
Try: http://www.rootsweb.com/roots-l/USA/co.html
Just a few ideas.
Good luck!

Hey, Cousins
Does anyone live in or near Denver?
While searching for the name of the wife of James S. Taylor and mother
of Jacob Shell Taylor, we've been lead to the Rocky Mountain News. The
edition for 7/25/1866 on page 4 is supposed to have a news article -
Mrs. J. S. Taylor's Stage arrival from the East and then the 5/18/1869
edition is supposed to have an article on his wife tried for stealing a
sewing machine. Either or both of these is very likely to mention her
name.
Can anyone get copies? Or give me an idea how to get such?
TIA - very much!

Hi, Cousins
There seems to have been some interest in Colby, Kansas and the person
for whom it was named. He was Joseph Ritner. He was a son of Henry
Colby & Elizabeth Terrill. Henry was a son of John Colby & Abigail
West. And, of course, we all know <G> that John was a son of Captain
Ezekiel & Sally Fowler (or maybe Tucker) <??G??> [Love ya, Ron!!]
Joseph Ritner was married to Mary Rebecca Welton and they had 10
children.
Hope this helps.

Hello,
I am researching Keith's and Townsend's in the Colby, Kansas area of Thomas
County Kansas. I am also interested in Colby's. Do you have an information
on Colby's that might be linked to Keith's, or Townsend's in Thomas County?
Thank you very much for your assistance.

Dear Anita,
Please keep posting those Keith reunion messages! I'm also a Rev. James (of
Bridgewater, MA) and Susanna descendent.
The thing I found interesting in this posting was your reference to Colby,
Kansas. I believe that was named after a descendent of Anthony Colby who
arrived in Boston in the 1630s. The Colby list is another one I follow since
the son of my ancestor, Nancy (Colby) Rollins [her Colby line: Anthony,
John, John, Joseph, Benaiah, Benaiah, Jr, Jonathan, Nancy] married Ellen
Keith of Barre, VT. They (Irvin Rollins and Ellen Keith Rollins were my gt
gt grandparents).
Please let me know if there are Keiths around Colby, Kansas, with Colby AND
Keith ancestors! It's always especially challenging to figure out double
cousins!!
Thanks!

Hi Bob, Bonnie and All,
I'm a little behind with my email and just read up on your Susannah Martin
Posts. I was surprised to see how many connections my husband and I share to
this family. My data is close to Bob's with some differences. I will post it
with sources so you can decide which dates to keep Bob. If you find that data
you have has more reliable sources than mine could you let me know. If anyone
wants more on any of these lines let me know. BTW I also descend from George
Martin's daughter Hannah from a previous marriage.

Descendants of Susanna North
Generation No. 1
1. SUSANNA2 NORTH (RICHARD1) died 19 Jul 1692 in Boston, MA (Source: Old
Families of Salisbury and Amesbury; David W Hoyt; Providence, RI; 1897; pg.
240.). She married GEORGE MARTIN 11 Aug 1646 in Salisbury/Essex, MA (Source:
Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury; David W Hoyt; Providence, RI; 1897;
pg. 239.).
Notes for SUSANNA NORTH:
"'Goodwife Martin' also had a seat assigned in 1667... Widdow Susanna was tried
for witchcraft, at Salem, June 29, and executed July 19, 1692.* [See Pike's
'New Puritan,' pp. 173-188; Upham's 'Salem Witchcraft,' vol. 2, pp. 145-9;
Whittier's poem, 'The Witch's Daughter.']
*She was arrested by a warrant dated April 30, examined May 20, 1692. One
charge against her was that she went from Amesbury to Newbury afoot, in a
'dirty season,' without getting her clothing wet. She is described as 'a
short, active woman, wearing a hood and scarf, plump and well developed in her
figure, of remarkable personal neatness;' one who 'scorned to be drabbled,' 'a
strong minded woman, as her examination shows.
"If the testimony of Wm. Brown [pg. 75] is conclusive as to date, she was
accused of witchcraft as early as 1660. In April, 1669, suit of George Martyn
against William Sargent, for slander, in saying said Martyn's wife was a witch,
the jury found for the defendant, but the court 'concurred not with the jury.'
George Martyn gave bond that his wife Susanna should appear at the next court
to answer to the charge concerning suspicion of witchcraft. In Oct., 1669, she
was required to acknowledge in open court that she wronged Christopher
Bartlett, in charging him with lying and stealing."
Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury; David W Hoyt; Providence, RI; 1897;
pg. 240.
"Susanna Martin, better known as Goody Martin, a famous Amesbury witch, tried,
convicted, and sentenced to hang at Salem
in 1692. The story goes that on the scaffold she uttered incantations which
caused the rope to wiggle and dance about so that the hangman could not tie the
knot, till a crow, flying overhead, cawed down the advice to try a noose of
willow withe. When this was done, the execution was completed.
"At the Boston, 'Special Court' sessions of June 30, 1692, five people were
tried: Sarah Good, Rebecca Nurse, Susannah Martin, Elizabeth Howe, and Sarah
Wildes. All of them were condemned. And on July 19 all of them were executed.
"John Hathorne, Judge at the Salem witch trials was the son of William
Hathorne, who was also a passenger on the same Ship, The Arbella, as Anthony
Colby was and also came to New England with Winthrop.
" RESOLUTION OF THE GENERAL COURT OF MASSACHUSETTS
1957
" Whereas, One Ann Pudeator and certain other persons were indicted, tried,
found guilty, sentenced to death and executed in the year sixteen hundred and
ninety-two for "Witchcraft"; and Whereas, said persons may have been illegally
tried, convicted and sentenced... and
" Whereas, The General Court of Massachusetts is informed that certain
descendants of said Ann Pudeator and said other persons are still distressed by
the record of said proceedings; therefore be it.
" Resolved, That... the General Court of Massachusetts declares its belief
that such proceedings, even if lawful under the Province Charter and the law of
Massachusetts as it then was, were and are shocking, and... further declares
that, as all the laws under which said proceedings, even if then legally
conducted, have been long since abandoned and superseded by our more civilized
laws, no disgrace or cause for distress attaches to the said descendants or any
of them by reason of said proceedings..."

were mentioned. His son, Nehemiah, administered his estate on April 16, 1764.
Marriage Notes for MARY MARTIN and ISAAC COLBY:
This is the pub. date.
Children of MARY MARTIN and ISAAC COLBY are:
i. ELIPHALET6 COLBY, b. 28 Oct 1728, Amesbury/Essex, MA (Source: Vital Records
of Amesbury, Massachusetts; Topsfield, MA, 1913; pg 59.); d. 8 Apr 1812,
Henniker/Hillsborough, NH (Source: Headstone, Hopkinton, NH); m. MARY ROGERS,
14 Feb 1750/51, Amesbury/Essex, MA (Source: Old Families of Salisbury and
Amesbury; David W Hoyt; Providence, RI; 1897; pg. 666.).
Notes for ELIPHALET COLBY:
The Eliphalet Colby family had lived first in Amesbury, MA, then South Hampton,
NH, Hopkinton, NH and then Henniker,NH.
Eliphalet owned the covenant of the First Church in Amesbury and was baptized
there May 6, 1752 or 1750.
On October 14, 1764 the South Hampton, NH Church gave Eliphalet and Mary a
Letter of Dismissal to the Church at Hopkinton, NH. The family lived in
Hopkinton from then until some time before the end of the Revolution
(1776-1779).
Then they moved to Henniker, NH and pioneered the Dana Harwood place in the
northeastern part of town, near the edge of Hopkinton. His three sons,
Eliphalet, Nicholas and Levi came with him, or soon after. Nicholas settled
near his father and Levi settled in the northwest part of town, a few rods east
of the Samuel Patten place.
The History of Henniker says that he erected a sawmill in the northeastern part
of Henniker and operated it for nearly a half a century. He is listed as a tax
payer in Henniker in 1800. He is buried in the cemetery on the main street in
Hopkinton, but his wife's grave cannot be found there. She might have
remarried.

Charles Colby (1800-1900) had two brothers that I know of, Ebenezer (b.1796)
and Philander, both of which emigrated to Howard Township, Kent County,
Ontario from New York state.
I also have information on the decendants of Horace, Jacob (my great-great
grandfather), Julia and Charles Dean Colby (1831-1909).

Have you included Philbrook/Philbrick Colby (son of Joseph) and Philbrook's son,
William. Colby, b. 1860 NH? I have pension application for William and will be
working on getting it to the Colby GenConnect Pension posting site. Recently
extended Philbrook line. Any interested researchers please contact me. Thanks.
I have a Teacher's Register school record that shows that Freddie and Ida
attended school in Barry County, Michigan during December 1870 - Jan, Feb.,
March 1871. Their teacher was Valentine Replogle.

Hi all,
Gen Web has a few books on-line if you have some time to read through them.
Go To <http://genweb.net/~books/>
For Massachusetts books, go to: http://genweb.net/~books/ma/
The "History of Boston First Church" looks interesting.

Also, I'm forwarding the following message posted to another list in
regards to cemetery desecration.
Since most us have gone to cemeteries looking for ancestor grave sites it
is always very disappointing to see headstones toppled over or simply gone.
Some from just age or other natural elements but sometimes caused by
vandalism.
Happy ancestor hunting.

- ---------------------------------
Hi all,
I'm posting this to a few lists because I think this is something we all
need to be aware of and give *serious* thought to.
Last week vandals destroyed a cemetery in Missouri USA.
This is not "false alarm," the incident has been verified by the local
sherrif, and the following website will show you pictures, as well as
details of a reward being offered. USGenWeb coordinators were notified
via our coordinators' list.
http://www.netins.net/showcase/andereck/bug/reward.htm
Some of the stones were so broken up, it will be impossible to read the
inscriptions which were carved on them.
But beyond the specifics of this particular case (it certainly is not
isolated..it is just particularly current and particularly awful)....I
think it brings to the forefront a couple of issues to which we all
might wish to give consideration.
1st - to teach our children the significance/importance of our
cemeteries and the preservation/protection of same. I'm sure we've all
taught our children to respect property, but it occurs to me to make a
bigger "point" of taking mine along on cemetery clean-up days, and
dragging them with me to help record inscriptions, etc. There's nothing
quite like growing up doing these things to sort of "insure" they
understand why the cemeteries are important and grow up to be adults
concerned with protecting them.
2nd - I personally consider this another example of how we sometimes
become a bit "overzealous" in some areas (like whether shaving cream
might "harm" the stones) and forget the urgency of recording the
inscriptions while we can.
Most of these stones simply aren't going to last forever...or at least
the information on them will not. They are going to deteriorate
naturally by the elements (if we're lucky!) ... or, in worst-case
scenarios such as this one, they are going to disappear via destruction
- be it intentional vandalism such as this or some more "accidental"
means such as the "relocation" of a cemetery.
Once they are gone, they're gone. That's it. All chance of recording the
information is lost.
The fact of the matter is, for many individuals, the information on
their cemetery marker may be the only record of their birth or death.
I just thought this was a good opportunity for us all to consider how
important this is.
Thanks,
Sandy
.
