George and all,
It made me chuckle to think of us Colbys wearing a shirt with Anthony and
Susannah on it, a la Grant Wood's "American Gothic." Just for laughs, what
are the earliest known likenesses of Colbys in your line?
(Mine is that of Charles Miles Colby, born March 31, 1826 in Ohio--there
have to be some that are older than THAT...)

The following appeared on Northeast Roots today.

New England News
Jail Birds on the Wing
Laconia, NH., Sept. 7. John Gallagher of Tilton and Charles A. Colby of
Meredith broke from the Belknap County Jail here last night and are at
large. Gallagher was serving a year's sentence and Colby was awaiting the
action of the Grand Jury this month. Escape was effected by sawing off two
iron rods guarding the windows from the corridor to the outside. They were
evidently assisted from the outside.

Can anyone help?
While helping a friend research the Chase family, I found an Abraham
Chase, born abt. 1696 in Newbury, MA who was married to (1) Ruth Morse,
(2) Abigail Colby and (3) Elizabeth Colby. Abraham was the son of John
Chase and Lydia Challis.
I'm guessing Abigail and Elizabeth were sisters. But I can't figure out
where they fit!

It was interesting to note that the Josiah Bartlett Chapter of the DAR took
over the Macy-Colby House since the ancestors of Josiah Bartlett (a Dec. of
Independence signer) are also ancestors to some Colbys. Josiah Bartlett goes
back to Richard Bartlett (born 1575) and his son, Christopher Bartlett, born
25 Feb 1623/24 in Sussex, England. Christopher was married in Newbury, MA on
16 April 1645 to Mary Bartlett (HELP!! I'm looking for her parents!!), and
died in Newbury in 1669/70.
Christopher Bartlett's granddau. (dau of his son Christopher) was Anne
Bartlett, born 29 Mar 1684 in Newbury. She married JOSEPH COLBY (Anthony,
1; John, 2; John, 3; Jospeh, 4) on 22 Nov. 1704 in Amesbury. My line after
that is Benaiah, 5, Benaiah, 6; Jonathan, 7; and Nancy, 8 -- of Corinth, VT
-- site of last year's Colby Clan Reunion. I figure Josiah Bartlett and one
of the Benaiahs must have been about 3rd cousins.
If anyone has more info. on Bartlett-Colby connections, I'd be happy to
receive it.
Moses L Colby is the son of William Colby b. 19 Oct 1775 Amesbury and his
second wife Mary Long
Need vitals for Mary Long, their daughter Elizabeth Colby and their son
Moses L. Colby
This note was sent to me about Moses, is it fairly truthfull.
Moses L Colby bought the Macy-Colby House from his nephew, William
Colby, son of his brother Obadiah.
In 1899 or 1900, Moses Colby presented the original family homestead,
known as the Macy - Colby House, to the Bartlett Cemetery Association.
Before turning the property over, he made extensive repairs to the house.
He put in sills, new floors, and the roof was reshingled. Also, the chimney
was rebuilt and the hearths in the old fireplaces were restored. Soon the
house was ready to be put into the care of the Josiah Bartlett Chapter,
Daughters of the Revolution and their first meeting in the Macy-Colby House
was held on June 27, 1900.
This also goes on to say that: Obadiah was willed the Macy-Colby House
upon the death of his grandfather, Hezekiah in 1844. He in turn willed it
to his son William, who sold it to his father's brother Moses.
Shouldn't this read "upon the death of his grandfather's brother,
Hezekiah"?
The only Hezekiah I have dieing in 1844 was the brother to Obadiah's
grandfather Obadiah.

Hi,
My wife has Edward Colby born abt. 1638 of Little Compton, Newport,
Rhode Island. We know nothing about him. Is their any information about
his ancestry, wife, or siblings out there. My wife descends from the only
child we know of Sarah Colby born 1665\6 of Little Compton, Rhode Island.
Sarah married Samuel Crandall in 1685 in Little Compton, Bristol,
Massachusetts. All we know is that Little Compton did not become a part of
Rhode Island until 1747.
Thank you for any information.

Hi List,
I sent this to Kit, but there are probably others who might be interested.
Here's a paragraph taken from an article that was published in "The Landon
Family Research Quarterly" Vol. II, Issue 4, dated Oct. 1993:
"vii SARAH OSGOOD: born 07 Dec 1652, Salisbury, Mass, married JOHN COLBY,
born 19 Nov 1656, Salisbury, Mass, died 06 Apr 1719, Amesbury, Essex Co,
Mass. Sarah died bef Feb 1714/15. This date is from the published genealogy.
Savage gives the birthdate 02 Feb 1653.
She was married about 1700 so was in her late 40s when she married. Sargeant
John was a soldier in King Phillip's War. The son of John and Frances (Hoyt)
Colby. He had married first to Sarah Eldridge and had eight children. She
died in 1692 and he married second to Sarah Osgood (She apparently had no
children). He married third to Ruth Ring in 1714/5."
And I found the following on Sarah Eldridge;

This particular Sarah, daughter of William and Anne didn't die until 1731
and she was living in Rhode Island. Also, I have found on several sites that
she married William Bentley, not John Colby. Here is one:
