Sherry,
Thanks. My gggg grandmother is Celestia Jane Colby. Her parents
(according to her death certificate in Conway, Massachusetts) are Jacob
Colby and Susan Davis. According to several different sources she was born
in New Boston, New Hampshire on April 7, 1840. She later married Lewis
Wells.
In the 1840 New Boston census there is a Jacob H. Colby listed. His
household consists of :
Males: 1 under five
1 between 50 and 60
Females: 1 under 5
1 between 20 and 30
They do not show up in any census in New Boston before 1840 so I was
wondering if this might be him. The children do not seem to match up
though.
If anyone knows anything regarding this Jacob Colby or Celestia Colby Wells
or Susan Davis Wells, I would appreciate any help I can get.
Thanks again,
Jennifer Moss

One of the year's most intense meteor showers, the Quadrantids,

with a sharp maximum on Jan. 3, 1999. The Quadrantids are the
only major annual meteor shower whose source, presumably a comet

the upcoming shower and to submit their data for analysis by
scientists
studying the structure and origin of the Quadrantid meteoroid stream.

Hi Alan and All,
I thought Haverhill was in MA. Hampstead was just north in
NH, and separated from
MA quite some time in the early to mid-1700s. Otherwise,
great info.
Haverhill, NH is up just north of Hanover where Dartmouth
College is.

Hi All,
Here is all I have found on the Ebenezer Colby family to
date. I need to check NH VR's for the births of Jacob's
children. He was gone from Bradford by 1840 and I have not
yet discovered to where. If you would post some data on
the Jacob you are searching for I will keep an eye out
while I search for the Bradford Colby's.

I thought Haverhill was in MA. Hampstead was just north in NH, and separated from
MA quite some time in the early to mid-1700s. Otherwise, great info.
Thanks,

Hello all,
I am searching for more information on a Jacob Colby and saw a reference to
that name in Wilson Roberts message (below). Does anyone know whether he
married a Susan Davis? Did he ever live in New Boston, NH? Any further
information on this Jacob Colby would be greatly appreciated.

Ron and all,
It is of interest regarding this Elizabeth that she was the niece of Mary
Bradbury, convicted of witchcraft in the 1692 madness. Her mother was
Elizabeth Perkins, bp 25 Mar 1611 m by 1636 to William Sargent. William
and Elizabeth's next (third) child was Mary, bp 3 Sept 1615, m by 1637 to
Thomas Bradbury.
On July 22, 1692, Samuel Colby signed a petition in favor of Mary Perkins
Bradbury (his wife's aunt). Samuel also testified on behalf of Susannah
Martin, the only executed witch from north of the Merrimac River. _The
Salem Witch Crisis_ by Larry Gragg (NY: Praeger 1992) says:
"Mary Bradbury seemed to be one of the most unlikely suspects. Her
Salisbury minister, James Allen, testified, 'She hathh lived according to
the rules of the gospel, amongst us, was a constant attender upon the
ministry of the word, & all the ordinances of the gosp0el." Allen
recalled her 'works of charity & mercy to the sick & poor.' . . .Thomas
Bradbury described his wife of fifty-five years as 'aged & weak &
grieved.' She had raised eleven children and four grandchildren and
through it all had been 'wonderful laborious diligent & industrious.' He
characterized his wife as a 'prudent, & provident' woman with 'a cheerful
spirit, liberal, charitable.'
". . .Mary was convicted of witchcraft and imprisoned. Friends helped
Mary escape from prison after Salisbury magistrate Robert Pike joined
dozens of neighbors in petitioning the Court of Oyer and Terminer on her
behalf. In October 1710 the General Court voted that the conviction and
attainders of . . . Mary Bradbury . . . be reversed. Apparently, no one
stepped forward as an advocate for Susannah Martin because her convictions
and attainders have never been reversed. William Sargeant talked openly
about Susannah being a witch and killing an infant that she had given
birth to while still single. Thomas Sargeant added to the rumors saying
that her son George 'was a bastard and that Richard Martin was Goodwife
Martin's imp.' "
>From The Salem Witchcraft Papers: Verbatim Transcripts of the Legal
Documents of the Salem Witchcraft Outbreak of 1692 Volume I edited by Paul
Boyer and Stephen Nissenbaum:
"(Deposition for Mary Bradbury)
July 22'd 1692
Concerning m's Bradburies life & conversation
Wee the Subscribers doe testifie; that it was such as became the gospel
shee was a lover of the ministrie in all appearance & a dilligent,
attender upon gods holy ordinances, being of a curteous, & peaceable
disposition & cariag: neither did any of us (some of whom have lived in

I think it's safest to go with the latest research by NEHGS, published in
"The Great Migration Begins," to whit:
"MARRIAGE: By 1633 Susanna (____) Waterman, widow of ______ WATERMAN of
Boston (land "at first was granted to (blank) Waterman who deceased.
Anthony Colbye married his widow & they two sold the said land unto James
Pennyman..." " (Suffolk Deeds 11:176-77).

Descendants of Robert Colby
Moses Colby, son of Levi and Catherine Smith was brother to
Levi Colby who married Betsey Clark and had Dr. Jonas

She married HENRY FRANKLIN PRESBY 31 Dec 1866 in
Bradford/Merrimack, NH (Source: NH State VR, Marriage
Certificate.), son of GEORGE PRESBY and CLARISSA HOWE.
More About ELIZABETH COLBY:
Lizzie was a midwife and her granddaughter, Della
(Flanders) (Gould) Trottier told of riding in a sleigh with
her to attend to the births on cold winter evenings.
Lizzie is buried in New Cemetery, Henniker, NH
Notes for HENRY FRANKLIN PRESBY:
HENRY F PRESBY was born in New Boston, NH and lived there
until he was seven years old. He was then taken to
Bradford, NH to live with relatives. He enlisted from
there in the New Hampshire Volunteers, Company D, 11th
Regiment. He was wounded in the Battle of Fredericksburg
and discharged for disability.
HENRY PRESBY FARM Westboro Corner
There seems to be no certainty as to who built the house
that Henry Presby owned in Wookchuck Hollow, Henniker, but
William Dunlap appears to have been the first settler on
the farm. He probably lived in a log cabin.
In 1783, Thaddeus Gibson settled on the farm with his
family and probably built the house. Nearly the entire
portion of the township above him was then a wilderness.
He did much toward bringing that portion of the town into
fruitful fields. He died February 23, 1834. His daughter
Polly, was born in 1780 and married John Whitcomb January
21, 1808. She died May 3, 1865.
Sometime in the 1800s Nahum Colby bought the place and
lived there until he died in 1882. An auction was held
after Nahum's death to settle the estate and Henry Presby
and his brother-in-law, Ernest Colby, bought the farm from
Nahum;s widow, Sarah, on December 8, 1883 for $2200. They
borrowed $1000 from Alonzo Tuttle to make the down payment.
They gave Sarah E Colby a first mortgage and Alonzo Tuttle
a second mortgage. Presby mortgaged the J Ward farm in
Bradford where he had been living, 8 head of cattle and one
horse. Ernest mortgaged the Robert Colby place in
Bradford, 8 head of cattle and a horse.
Some people doubted if Presby and Colby could ever pay for
the farm. They didn't reckon with the redoubtable Lizzie
who ranged the hills to pick raspberries, blackberries and
blueberries to pay the interest while Henry and Ernest grew
the calves into cows and steers. When the herd became big
enough, they held an auction and sold off some of the stock
and then started over again. The chestnut trees were a
source of revenue. There were two immense trees - five
feet in diameter at the butt - and many smaller but good
bearing trees on the farm. Bushels of chestnuts were
picked up and sold. Lizzie made butter and sold it and
even the bees helped out by making honey which was also
sold. The farm was eventually paid for in full.
When Presby and Colby bought the place, the Presby s -
Henry, Lizzie, Eva Lula, Oscar and Myron, settled in the
lower house where Nahum Colby and his family had lived.
There was another house nearer the main road, called the
"upper house". This had been built on the so-called Patten
place for James Colby, youngest son of Levi , there at the
time Nahum owned the farm. At one time Lewis bought the
farm from for $6000 but sold it back to Nahum. Lewis lived
in the upper house for a time. After the death of Thomas,
his wife, The former Josephine Tuttle of Stoddard, and
their two children, Everett N, and Mabel, moved to White
River Junction, Vermont, where they had a millinery shop.
Everett lived in Keene, NH and worked for a wholesale
grocery firm.
Ernest Colby and his wife, Clara, lived in the upper house
until the partnership ended and they moved to the Worcester
Morrison farm on the Hillsboro road.
At one time, there was also a third house on the farm,
probably erected in the early 1800s, across the brook from
the lower house. This was occupied by Alanson Wood and his
wife, Mary Colby, daughter of Silas and Hannah (Farrar)
Colby. Wood died November 13, 1873 and his wife died May
13, 1865. Nothing remains of the house except a filled-in
cellar hole.
On September 23, 1911, Lizzie Presby, Henry's wife, bid off
the Alva Merrill farm on the old Henniker road and they
moved there. In the meantime, Henry Presby had bought the
Patten place for approximately $700 and gave it to his son
Myron. He also bought the Ed Morgan place at The Oaks in
Henniker for his daughter Eva Lula. Myron bought the home
farm from his father and he and his family lived there
until 1917 when they moved to the Alvah Merrill place to
assist his father in running the farm.
For several years Fred Whitcomb and his wife, Jessie,
rented the farm from Myron, but after the death of his
wife, Fred went to Hillsboro to live with his sister and
the farm was sold to Harold Ayer of Henniker. Mr Ayer and
his family lived there for several years until Mr Ayer was
killed by a falling tree. The farm was again sold and is
presently owned by William Malek, (1976 & 1995), who has
renovated the house considerably. While Ayer owned the
place, he tore down the upper house and built a foundry on
the site. At one time Elmer and Della Gould lived in the
upper house.

Notes for EVA LULA PRESBY:
Eva Lula Presby was born at the Moses Colby farm at the
four corners in Bradford, NH, about a mile up the road from
Day Pond. She attended the school near her home and had a
good record for attendance and scholarship. She moved with
her parents to a farm in Westboro Corner, Henniker, NH in
the early part of 1883 when she was 15 years old. She may
have also attended the Westboro Corner school for a time.
She worked at various places, including the Bacon place at
Westboro Coner, before she married at the age of 18 to
Warren Flanders.
After Warren's death in 1997 Eva lived on the farm for some
ten years or more, then removed to Penacook and later to
Manchester where she died.
MRS WARREN C. FLANDERS
Eva Lula (Presby) Flanders died at the Notre Dame Hospital
in Manchester on Thursday, October 2, 1918. The remains
were brought to Henniker for burial. Services were held at
the Methodist Church on Saturday, Miss May Granger
officiating. Mrs Nettie Felch and Mrs Harry Holmes sang
"Abide With Me" and "Face To Face". Mrs Flanders had
undergone an operation for appendicitis when pneumonia
developed from an attack of influenza.
Mrs Flanders was the widow of Warren Flanders who was
drowned a number of years ago. She was the daughter of
Henry F. and Lizzie (Colby) Presby and was born in Bradford
October 7, 1868 and had lived in Henniker for about 30
years.
She leaves six children: Lizzie Flanders, Della Gould and
Charles, Everett, Grosvenor and Charlton Flanders, her
parents and two brothers, Oscar J and Myron Presby.
Burial was in the Plummer Cemetery, Henniker, NH. The
bearers were Warren Gould, Frank Connor, Frank Ward and
Herbert Rowe.

Warren rowed out on the Contoocook River in a thunderstorm
to look after some ducks that had strayed away. "When he
did not return his family gave the alarm and searching
parties were organized, but the body was not recovered
until the ninth day. A diver was employed and large
throngs of people gathered to watch the unusual sight. The
services of a clairvoyant were also engaged, but the final
recovery was made by a body of neighbors who had kept up a
constant search of the river." Flanders Genealogy,

I tried the link and the server appears to be down, or
