Hello,
I read your message re: Dunaway and Colbert/Colvard.
I have the marriage dates of Sarah's brothers and sisters, but not hers. Do you know what it is?
I assume she was married in Hardeman Co., TN, but I may be wrong.
Sarah's parents were William Colvard and Rebecca Davis of North Carolina. It is assumed they were living in Surry County, NC, but there is no guarantee.
I came across a document in Surry County, NC issued in 1786. In it John Colvard leased land for 10 years. One of the witnesses was Reverend Henry Pattillo.
Reverend Henry Pattillo also lived in Franklin Co., NC. During the American Revolution he was the chaplain of the Bute County (Franklin/Warren) Militia. My 4th GG Thomas Colbert/Colvard was a lieutenant in Colonel Alston's Bute County company.
Thomas had a brother named John. They were both in Captain Nathaniel Bradford's Halifax District militia in 1756. Are they the same John Colvard's? Don't know. It may be only a coincidence.
But on the surface there appears to be a connection. It will take more research to determine how I am related to your Colvard line.
When Bute Co. split, the northern part became Warren County. The southern was Franklin Co.,
My family went by the names Calvert, Colvard, and Colbert.
Several years ago I took the Family Tree DNA test and a year later two cousins who were descended from Wade Hampton Colvard and Latha Ann Gage took tests from Family Tree DNA.
Guess what? Our DNA matched. I had an exact y-DNA-67 with one cousin and a y-DNA-67 minus 1 match with the other.
Would like to exchange info with you.

Hello,
I've been researching the James "Logan" Colbert for over twenty years. If you have access to a genealogical library, see if they carry The North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal. I wrote a two-part article entitled "James Logan Colbert of the Chickasaws: The Man and the Myth." It was in the May 1994 and Feb 1995 issues of the journal.
I think you'll find the article interesting. For starters, James didn't come to America by ship. He was born in America -- precisely at Plumtree Island (now Mush Island. It is on the Roanoke River opposite the town of Weldon, NC. It's just below the Virginia border).
His father was Joseph Calvert -- that's right -- Calvert. He was an Indian trader whose partner was
Abraham Colson, a registered Chickasaw trader by the British Commission of Indian Affairs.
Joseph Calvert (Colbert) and Joseph Colson -- Abraham's brother -- bought land on Plumtree Island on the same day in 1720. The Turbeville's and Long's also lived on the island. All were Indian traders. Joseph Colson also worked for William Byrd II of Virginia. William Byrd II was one of the very first persons to send a caravan to the Chickasaw Nations and supply them with muskets and powder, etc., to fight the French in 1722. The caravan began at Fort Christiana in Virginia and followed the Indian Paths to the Chickasaws. At that time Joseph Calvert and Abraham Colson were packhorsemen working for Byrd. When Byrd stopped trading with the Chickasaws, Joseph and Abraham formed a partnership and began trading with the Chickasaw themselves.

I am looking for information on William Colbert/Calbert who married Elizabeth Anden on Feb. 13, 1843 in Shenandoah County Virginia. The bondsman was John Calbert. He shows in the 1860 census as still living in Shenandoah Co, however I cannot find any other information on him such as father, mother, brothers, sisters, or date of birth. Any information would be helpful. Thank you.

Hello,
I do not believe there is a y-DNA project for the Chickasaw Colbert's because so far no direct-line Colbert males have taken the test. And if they have taken it, they are not sharing the results with anyone. I wish we could get DNA samples from several descendants of each of James' sons -- Levi, William, George, James, Joseph, and Samuel. That way we could be positive of a direct descending lines to James.
I believe I share the same DNA as the sons of James even though I am not a direct descendant of his. I wrote a two-part article on James Colbert back in the May 1994 and Feb 1995 issues of The North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal. In it, I wrote about James and the other traders who lived among the Chickasaws. One was Abraham Colson -- a registered Chickasaw trader through the Commission of British Indian Affairs in 1738. Abraham's brother, Joseph Colson, lived on Plumtree Island (now Mush Island on the Roanoke River opposite Weldon, NC) along with my 5th GG Joseph, the Long's, and the Turbeville's (also Indian traders). Long traded with the Cherokees and Turbeville traded with the Creeks. Their names are found in Cherokee and Creek
Records..
If I'm correct in my assumption, I should have the exact or near exact DNA as the sons of James Colbert.

Hello,
I would like to exchange info. with you re: Chickasaw Colbert's. and other Colbert families. Back in 1993 I wrote a two-part article for The North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal. It appeared in the May 1994 and Feb 1995 issues entitiled: James Logan Colbert -- The Man and the Myth. I am also related to James Logan Colbert through DNA, but I'm not a direct descendant. James had a father and brothers and sisters. In 1783, James Colbert wrote a letter (though Martin) that he was born in America. It is in the Calendar Papers of Virginia. In 1765 he applied as a Chickasaw Indian Trader through the British Commissioner of Indian Affairs and said he was born in the Carolinas (Plumtree Island -- now Mush Island opposite Weldon, NC on the Roanoke River and a few miles south of Virginia). His father was named Joseph and he moved to Plumtree Island in 1720 with the Long, Colson, and Turbeville families (all Indian traders). Joseph was also an Indian trader who died in 1739!
. His partner was Abraham Colson -- a registered Chickasaw Indian trader in 1738. Abraham's brother, Joseph Colson, bought land on Plumtree Island on the same day that Joseph Calvert/Colbert did. Joseph Colson worked for William Byrd II of VA and both he and William (son of Joseph Calvert/Colbert) were with Byrd when he and a company of men from VA and NC made the Dividing Line in 1728/9 between VA and NC.
Do you know anyone in your family that is a direct-line male Colbert descendant to James Colbert? If so, my DNA should match his.
