Well hello person out there with a matching surname! You are beginning a fun adventure. Hope you stay for the whole ride and find a treasure at the end!
http://www.ancestry.com/download/charts The first thing you need to do is start where you are. Go to this website and download some charts. You will need to fill out as much information as possible on each chart. It is helpful to have all the kids listed too..and their birthdates and places they lived. Everything you can find out.
Then..when you are armed with this information...go to your local library and see the person at the desk where the computers are. You may not have a subscription to Ancestry.com, but the library probably does...and it is free. They will help you access it there. With names, dates and places people were born (make sure you have state, county...city is also helpful) you can begin to search. The last census available for us to use is the 1940...then every 10 years before that. Notice where parents, grandparents, kids say they were born.
I will say that I have found the Colbert name in Spartenburg County, SC and some of the counties around it, as well as Abbeville County, SC. Some of these I believe went up and lived in Rutherford County NC (these two counties border each other at the state line).
Another thing I will tell you is that my husband (the Colbert) has his DNA submitted to FamilyTreeDNA. We did the 67 point scan and matched many others which led us to understand that his ancestral name is really CALVERT. This may be something you want to consider. You must submit the DNA of a MALE Colbert though to do this.
I can't tell from your e-mail if you are black or white, but there are way many black Colbert findings than white. So, when you do searching on Ancestry you can check the box that applies and that will eliminate the people of the opposite race and narrow your search a bit.
We are white, and in my research so far I have not found a single Colbert who was a slave owner...that was related to us. Not sure about the Calvert part of it, but still have not discovered where we fit into this line. I have some thoughts on it...but still not firm enough.
Be glad to guide you and help you along. My husband and I are from Florida originally.

My mother was told that we're from South Carolina...last name Colbert. Not sure where to even begin tracing my roots, but noticed your post and thought I'd take chance and respond. What do I have to lose!! We're here in FLA, but it my memory serves me correct, my great grands were from SC...
