Hi Wendy, Minnie Colbert was my grandmother's (Dorothy Bell/Walters) mother. She was one of about 7 children. Please send me a note if you are still on this site as it was a long time since your message was posted.

All of the posts attached have been very interesting reading. It is also a little confusing. All seem to go along with stories my grandmother told me. We were told we had come from Native American blood and that we also had Black Dutch. Has anyone ever heard the term Black Dutch? Below is what I have for my Ancestry. If anyone has any way to prove or disprove this please contact me.

The term "Black Dutch" first appears in U.S. colonial history as a reference to people from the Netherlands of darker skin than most northern Europeans. In the Netherlands, the term Black Dutch was applied to the descendants (usually illegitimate) of Spanish soldiers and Dutch women (who were traditionally fairer) during the Spanish occupation of the Low Lands in the 16th century. Because of the circumstances, it had negative connotations. Some such Dutch descendants came to the North American colonies, where most Dutch settled in the New York area.
Sephardic Jewish merchants from Spain and Portugal settled in the Dutch Republic following their expulsion fr

We too are looking for Colberts. Ours immigrated into the US from Canada and down to NY. Eventually Robert colbert settled for awhile in Dubuque Iowa. Their orginal homeland was either Waterford or Cork Ireland in the early 1800. Some time later they immigrated to Canada. The Canadian records indicate that great great grandfather was born in the 1860's.
Do you know where your Colberts emigrated from? Ireland, England, Scotland or France,? Perhaps you have to go back to Europe to make a connection and get the true facts.
