You will want to search the census information and learn more about the family. Ancestry allows that for no cost, and the Family Search files and rootsweb as well as USGEN Web sites fr the various states and counties may have much. As for the DNA, you can learn more at Family Tree DNA. Testing doesn't lie so it is a good way to figure out what families you belong with, etc., though the sources and findings are still needed from documents and records. Athens, GA, is close to Oglethorpe Co., and there are various Colbert's, Calvert's, and other name variations from the area.

I have a black James Culbert, b. in Georgia about 1837, who is found in the U.S. Federal Census in 1870 in District 6, Chatham County, Georgia.
I have a William and Mary Culbert family, William b. in Georgia about 1831, who is found in the U.S. Federal Census in 1860 in the Beasley District, Crawford County, Georgia. They had a female slave age 28 at that time.
I have a L.M. Culbert, b. in Georgia about 1820, who is found in the U.S. Federal Census in 1870 in District 16, Echols County, Georgia.
I have a Thomas Culbert who lived in Coweta County, Georgia in 1840.
And, I have a W.C. Culbert, b. in Georgia abt. 1821, who is found in the U.S. Federal Census in 1850 in Lafayette County, Mississippi.
Sorry, no Colbert or Flammang.
I wonder about your ancestors associated with both Athens and Oglethorpe. While Athens is in Clarke County, Oglethorpe is in Macon County somewhat removed from Athens. Do you mean instead Oglethorpe County, which is just east of Athens?

Hello,
I have several Culbert individuals connected to Georgia, both black and white, in my database. However, no specific associations to the towns you mention, and no connections to Flammang or Flemming. If you would provide the years for the folks you are looking for so I can narrow down the individuals of interest, I'd be happy to send you my info. privately (instead of posting it here).
Interestingly enough, my white immigrant ancestor, Moses Cuthbert/Culbert, married Jane Fleming in Philadelphia in 1832. But they have no connection to Georgia, nor do any of their descendants until very recently.

My family is Irish/Caucasian, but we think based on several source based docs and other research, that the Colbert's of our family have Elisha and Marianne as the ancestors who go back to GA, later 1700's, in particular old Wilkes/Madison/Franklin Do. Some others of the family were likely in Oglethorpe and elsewhere, somewhat due to boundary changes. I have considerable research on the area. I believe that Fleming's figure in due to some researched information and the fact that an Elisha relative, William Colbert, likely a brother, named his son Fleming Tine. Most of William's large family moved on to AL and later MS, and some to LA. Elisha moved with his family to So IL, 1802 or earlier, then back to AL. I have to tell you, however, there are many Colbert's, Colvert's, Calvert's, and other variations of the surname in the area during the time of the Rev. War and its upheaval and into the early part of the 1800's. DNA is sorting out some of this; something you may wan!
t to consider eventually.

According to records Jim Colbert and Edna Colbert(Flammang) (Flemming) which was her maiden name was born in 1858 the children of this union included my grandfather Nathan Colbert, Bob Colbert, Earnest Colbert, Clinton Flammang, Ella Flammang, Elois Colbert, and Will Henry Flammang. Upon my search I stumbled upon a Roscoe C. Colbert, Fronie E. Colbert and a Lottie B...all whom are Caucasian. If anyone is related to them or can give me some information that would be awesome. Thank you so very much!

Does anyone have any information on Darinda/Dorenda Colbert, daughter of Wellington Colbert (b. 1817) and Catherine Estes? I think she was born about 1863 and may be my great great grandmother, but can't find a record of her marriage or anything. She may have married a Thomas Bumgardner (or some variation of that last name). Any info would be appreciated.

Message Board Post:
I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out who Elizabeth Ann (Colbert) Stewart's parents were. This can be a bit confusing because Elizabeth Ann (Colbert) Stewart's daughter was named Elizabeth Ann Holder.
I've found this quoted from the National Archives - Southwest Region: "On 8 August 1894, J.S. Wolfe, 82 y.o slave of Jim Wolfe who lived his entire life with the Chickasaw, that Elizabeth Ann Stewart Holder was the granddaughter of Old John Colbert. He acted as the interpreter for Old John at the indian land sales in Ponotoc, Mississippi. He related that George Stewart , (Eliabeth Ann Colbert's Husband) who died after being snagged under the eye with a cane. He personanaly knew Ben, William, and Lewis, children of Elizabeth Holder."
She seems to have been born around 1774, but it's not at all clear who Old John was.
I'd be grateful for any of your thoughts.
Dennis
