Pat,
I will fire up the desktop today and see what I have. I think I have always though Minkie might
be native American. As to why, except for the oddness of the name, I don't know. Somewhere in
the back of my mind is also an inkling of a surname somewhere, but off hand I don't recall why I
thought either. Those records in the south are all over the place, which poses lots of problems.

I just wanted to know if you had found Minkie mentioned somewhere else than
I had...that 1850 Rutherford County Census. I am trying to find out who
the parents of John and William Colbert were....strongly believe that they
were brothers, as they are right next to each other on the census and close
in age and born in the same state.

I have not checked out the Rutherford group much really. Our Colbert DNA
hasn't matched with anyone else, but now known family members. What that
means I don't know, but Haplotype is I2a, and there are some I's in the
Calvert grouping. I have files on lots of Colbert's/Calvert's/various
spelling, etc. Minkie turned up and so did the others in the Carolina's. There is
also a Tamer (another female and not a James as some have changed that
to). I believe she may have been John's wife. I will check further into the
DNA and see how things are working out there. What exactly do you want to
know?

The Frohock's and Colbert's are related in So. IL through the Baker's there. However, the migration patterns could be similar. John and Thomas Frohock, and William came from Bucks Co. PA to Rowan Co, Carolina, but records are found in various counties. They were Tories aligned with the colonial government and the courts so names are on a lot of records. I would be really interested in what you found in GA, The descendants of Thomas and son Alexander wound their way through Tenn, KY, and on into IL where they settled. There was another Frohock family also in Maine same time, early 1700's, as the ancestor of the IL Frohock's, and both were named John. They trace back to England. If you find more to indicate other relationships with the families you mention I would be very interested.
My Colbert's are believed to derive from an Elisha of Elbert/Madison/Franklin Co., GA, though not totally proven. Elisha had inherited land there from a James, who I think was wed to a Susannah, and I believe he died about 1783, but land did not get passed on since James warranted bounty land but never had it granted. Finally, it was granted after several court sessions in 1798. Elisha started paying taxes in Franklin Co, GA then, 1798 and did so till 1802. Most of the Colbert's moved out of GA around that time, and Elisha may have gone on to KY/VA about that time. By 1807 he is noted as a "squatter" on land in Randolph Co. in what was to become Gallatin Co, IL. He later sold the land back in GA in 1806 to a William, possibly the one of 1772 or his son William. Our DNA is strongly related to a William Colbert of 1772 who was in Greene/Hancock, GA, and later went on to AL, MS, and sons went to LA. The early James and William are likely brothers. Still looking to prov!
e James, Susannah, and Elisha to some extent, but all the evidence, censuses, deeds, etc., along with the vast research done on the William of 1772 family indicate my Colbert's relate. Making sense also is an earlier William as a possible father of both, so working on that as well. I do think they were in the Carolina's, but where I can't pin down, and they may have been earlier in VA for there are early Calbert's/Colbert's there. Nicholas Culbert/Colbert warranted land in the 1740's in Bute, so he is another possibility.
With your Colvard's, the Clary's might be helpful to look into. Somewhere there are answers for all of us -- we hope.

I have been following this line of thought, but my husband had surgery so have not had the time to respond.
Sandra, There is so much simularity...and then you mentioned Minkie. Odd name...so...is this a different line that mine...the one out of Rutherford, NC? Minkie was the wife of a William Colbert (who I believe was a brother to John Colbert) Both William and John were living next to each other in Rutherford, NC in 1850. Did you find her AFTER he died (1860) William died in Rutherford and appears on the Mortality Schedule. I don't know when/where John died, but suspect it was in Rutherford after 1850...that is the last census I found him. John was married to someone named Syntha. John was the person who signed the marriage bond for Alexander Colbert when he married Mary Sutton in Rutherford (1834). William (1780) and John (1785)both state they were born in NC. Minkie and Syntha in VA. Alexander said he was born in SC. Alex and his first wife had several of their children in SC before moving to Lumpkin County, GA just prior to the 1840 Census.
Alexander married twice. His first wife Mary Sutton states that she was born in Tn. His second wife, Mary Covington was born in NC. Alex's second wife bore him a son that he named Elisha.
Is this Minkie you are talking about found somewhere other than in Rutherford, NC. When she shows up with William Colbert in 1850 she is 84 years old...14 years older than her husband.

This is really interesting. Alexander had a son, John Alexander Calvert, b. Virginia 1809 and died in Jefferson Co, IL. My sample was Ernie Calvert in the FTDNA site. I have been trying to find another descendent of Alexander to find out whether the father of Cynthia's children was a Calvert. I think I will contact David Bell and ask him to look at the two. This is very exciting news.

Sandra,
I think that the Frohock and my Calvert/Colbert/Colvard family are somehow connect, but I'm not sure how.
Wherever I look, I find Frohocks's. They are not necessarily from the same family every time, but they could be brothers, cousins, etc.
For instance, there are Frohock's in western NC, in Bute (Franklin and Warren)NC, in Elbert Co., GA with other Colberts, and in Illinois.
It could be the Frohock's and Calverts (variant spellings) are just following the same migration paths, or it could be something else that neither of us are aware of.
I did find a couple of things of interest in Bute Co. In addition to finding the Frohocks, I also found the Stokley and Basford (Bashford) families living there.
John and wife Mary were living in Bute/Warren Co. before 1774.
May Court 1774:
Ordered that the hands of Adkin McLamore, Benjamin Kendall, Nathaniel Peebles, William Bagley, John Hawskins, Young McLamore, ...
JOHN STOKLEY...do lay off a road the best & Convenient Way ...and open & Clear the same & that Nathaniel Henderson be overseer of the same.
John Stokley and his wife lived in Warren Co as late as 1797
when my 3rd GG Thomas Colvard was a constable for Franklin Co. There was also a Jehu Stokley living in Warren Co., but I'm not sure what relationship the two Stokley's had with one another.
Benson Basford and his wife Penting also lived in Bute/Warren Co, NC around the same period of time.
I believe John Stokley Colvard had a brother named William Bashford Colvard in Elbert Co., GA.
If the Stokley and Basford families from Bute/Warren NC are related to John S. and William B. Colvard of Elbert Co, then the possibility exists that my 4th GG Thomas Colvard of Halifax and Franklin Co may be their father and my 3rd GG Thomas Colvard is their brother.
Richard
P.S. DNA shows that I am related to a Colvard family that lived in west NC during the 1700's and early 1800's. So I have DNA relatives using both the Colvard and Colbert name.

Well, perhaps. There is a John A. Colbert whose family was in Jefferson Co., IL, wed into the Innman's, and the DNA matches with the PW Calverts. thinking is that John A. descends from an Alexander or, at least, that is my understanding. Maybe I should compare DNA with you if you match Rose's and Neal/McNeil? My Colbert's haven't matched with anyone else so far, but I have Rose's in my maternal line and find the families overlap back when. Tangled webs!!

I keep forgetting to mention that there was, and still is, a family of Dorsey's who lived in Gallatin Co., IL very early. Joseph Calvert also was in White Co., carved out of early Gallatin, d. 1817 and had a large family. He was also earlier in GA.
