The story that was told to me was that he went to purchase some cattle and never returned. 1900 he was a cook, 1910 he worked at a meat market, 1920 he was a stockman at a ranch according to the census. Ida Wall Colbert did run a bording house in 1920 but in 1930 she farmed with her children James 'Dude' Monroe, 18 and Charles 'Charlie' Carter, 15.

I am not familiar with Concordia Parish, however, my friend has been a person in LA associated with geneaology for a very long time. I will check with her as there may be some connection to other Colberts in LA. My GGG grandparents lived in Natchitoches Parish, LA. I will check the geographics and talk with my friend. My GGG grandparents were Washington and Fanny Colbert, born in 1820 and 1840(?) respectively. Will keep you posted!

There happens to be a Washington in Missouri during some of the earlier census. Also, there is a Washington in Jefferson County, VA whose family members possess some of the same names as members of my GGG grandfathers offspring. This is typical in the African American community during the naming process if they are a close sibling or an Aunt, Uncle, etc. If you can share some of your information, I would be indeed blessed. Whether they are slaves records or otherwise. It appears that our families traveled similar roads to similar states. It is not my intention to disprove your Irish ancestry nor to prove my connection to an Irish ancestry. I am really interested in collecting data to pass on to my three children so that will have an idea of who came before them.

Johnny, William, and other Fleming Tine descendants,
I didn't realize this was still out there dangling, but I thught you all would like to know. DNA has proven a definite connection to my family, descended from James of So. IL, whose brother Hiram, descendant of Kim (see above), and the DNA connects to the family of William and Margaret Williams Colbert of earlier Hancock/Greene Co., GA, late 1700's. Our connect there is believed to be an Elisha Colbert who moved from Elbert/Franklin/Madison Co., GA on to IL early early 1800's. He is there prior to 1807. A Bible record lists FlemingTine, the first, as the oldest son of Margaret and William Colbert. He had a son of the same name, and others but not much more is known. William, the father, was born 1772. He moved his family from GA to AL, Montgomery area and later to Noxubee, MS. With sons, the settlement of the area around Macon, MS, ensued. Genetically, a very close match also is Kinney/Kenny, and the Shields surname also crops up, along with others both familiar !
and known and some not. My understanding is that Fleming Tine, the first one, wed a Sarah Vincent, and a daughter was Mattie, who married an Ivy and a Shields. I find some indications that a Kinney is involved there, too, but I cannot prove any of that except for records found elsewhere, not source based. The early William was wed three times and lived in GA, AL, and MS, and there are a large number of children and descendants. Two sons moved on to LA, and the later children wound up in ARK and TX. Some of our So IL related family also wound up in ARK. There are other Colbert's, Calvert's and variations of the surname in all these places, however, so it is a puzzle lots of us want to know more about. I don't know of the Indian connections to the reservation, etc., nor whether there is a Creek or Choctaw relationship. I do find also a Sarah Eliza in the James Logan Colbert family and wonder if perhaps the two could be confused -- one daughter of Fleming Tine and Sara!
h Vincent and the other James Logan related. Regardless, Fleming Tine
relates genetically to my family of Colbert's in early GA in the late 1700's. Where they came from prior to GA isn't known, but the Carolina's seem likely. We will all hope to learn more!

I see I have a type for the date of the Colbert's in GA, which was late 1700's not 1800's. By the early 1800's my family, descended from Elisha (not totally proven) was in IL, and the William and Margaret Williams Colbert family moved on to AL about 1817 and then on to MS. Two sons stayed in GA, and then moved on to LA, and then had large plantations there. William and other sons moved on to the Macon, MS, area. Who William and the early ancestor of our line descend from is not yet definitely established.

My name is Dee Colbert and I too am African American. I posted information on 12/25/07 but I have not gotten any response. When I saw that you were of A/A descent, I decided to write. I am the granddaughter of Duncan (Dunk) and Frances (Frankie) Colbert. My grands were born between 1860 and 1870. Together, they had 8 or 9 children, all born between 1885 and 1906 in Concordia Parish, Louisiana. I realize this is not much to act upon, but if anything sounds familiar to you, please respond.

There was, indeed, a Colbert in the Jefferson household, a butler, as I recall. However, don't assume that all Colbert's are James Logan related for DNA is proving they are not. Many of the variations of the name occur over time. What I know for sure only is that my own Colbert's are of Irish descent mostly, and I can not, and I have been researching a very long time, relate them to the James Logan family. None seem to have gone to Oklahoma. Now, could they have? I just don't know. I do know that genetically we relate to the William Colbert family and his and my own, believed to descend from Elisha Colbert there and then in IL, were in the Savannah area of northern GA in the late 1700's. From there they went to AL, and yes I have some information, and much that proves all this, some of mine then on to IL and ARK, and theirs on to MS, then ARK, LA, and TX. There are other Colbert's and Calvert's in IL in the early part of the 1800's and some later further north. The !
same is true of AL and MS. I have land records for many of these but nothing with slave information on it. There is a Colbert in early VA, an overseer, and another later as well. I don't recall any Washington, but there are lots of James's, both in my family and scattered throughout the documents for Colbert everywhere -- also William's.

There was also a James Colbert, a free Negro who was married to Phoebe Holland in the state of Maryland. Their union produced about 8 children and it appears that they migrated to New York in the early nineteenth century. One of their sons is listed as a free Negro as well in 1814. Dont know of any relationship but it is some information for you relating to your search for other James Colberts.

Do you have family records for any of the Colberts in GA, AL, MS, MO? As you are probably aware, most African American records in the U.S. are oral.

You may query James Logan Colbert and a barrage of information will come up. The information also links James Logan Colbert to about three Native American wives and legend has it that those offspring from James Logan and his wives produced offspring with the slaves that they held. My GGG Grandfather (father of William Colbert) was Washington Colbert. It has been said that he migrated with the Colbert family during the "Trail of Tears". Washington had two children born in Alabame (Betty and William) and the others were born in the state of LA. I am uncertain of the brothers of James Logan Colbert but I am certain that he probably had some. It appears that he chose to strike out on his own and cut off ties with his family. There is another story that tells of Colberts that were related to the Hemmings of the Thomas Jeeferson plantation. Just read info on the Colbert link between the Griffins. Washington has a person living in his household with the last name Griffin !
in 1870.

I would very much like to hear more about your William from LA. I have done research int that area for several reasons, and some of our Colbert's of William who came from GA to AL went on to LA and had large plantations there, so again the mulatto possibility is probably there and no surprise. As for James Logan being one, that I have never heard, yet ...?

I think it has been stated that James Logan Colbert was a mulatto and just appeared on the scene in the U.S. I am of the African American Colbert family and my GG grandfather bore the name William Colbert. He apparently was born in Alabama and raised in Natchitoches Parish, LA. His father was born in VA and migrated to LA as well. Hope the possibility of a non British/Scotish heritage does not frighten you.
